Hi Everyone

Here are the runs for the weekend:

This Saturday we return to Silvermine East for the first time this year. It’s time to get back on to our well-loved trails

We meet at Kalk Bay station parking

From there we cross Main Road and go up the never ending stairs to Boyes Drive.  We cross Boyes Drive and go up Weary Willy’s stairs. At Weary Willy’s waiting spot we go straight up Echo Valley. At the junction at the top we turn left and right to follow Dead Man’s path down and around Klein Tuinkop.

We continue along the jeep track and cross the top of the waterfall, turning right at the next jeep track junction. We run along this for a short while before turning left on to a single track which takes us to the jeep track at Junction pool.

We turn right and immediately left on to another jeep track, turning right on to single track after 500m. We cross the next jeep track and wind our way past Tartarus cave before turning down Spes Bona Valley, back to Weary Willy’s and home .

There are a number of different routes and options so this is just a guide for a route around 12km. The groups will make their own democratic/autocratic decisions

Rendezvous and start time
Meet at
6:25am at Kalk Bay station parking to sign in. We start running at 6:30am

Terrain and distance
Single track and jeep tracks. Uphill at the start then flowing undulating running to get back

The route above is around 12km but there are options for longer and shorter options

This is a pack run with regular regroups, we will split into speed groups with leaders and sweeps on the morning.

The relaxed group will be confirmed on Friday

Please note that  K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top depending on weather, space blanket, ICE ID - either on your phone, bracelet/tag, card in your backpack.

ImportantPlease remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.
Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind. Please keep the groups together and ensure that no-one is left on their own.

Trailers’ guidelines here:

K-Way VOB Trail Run Warning: Trail running is inherently more dangerous than road running. It may take place over uneven hazard strewn trails in exposed and often remote terrain where help is not always readily available.

Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk as although the organizers take reasonable precautions to ensure runner safety, it cannot be guaranteed. To this end neither the Club nor the organisers personally can be held liable for any claims relating to inter alia, injuries, disabilities and death. Further any minor child participating in any trail running activity will be deemed to be doing so with the consent of his or her guardian.

By starting out on a trail run you explicitly acknowledge that:

1] you understand the associated risks involved and accept full responsibility for your own safety.

2] you are medically and physically fit to participate and

3] are carrying the necessary water, clothing and safety equipment required for the particular run.

Basic procedures for: “Wheels for Markus” (13 peaks)

Chantel Nienaber will be running the 13 Peaks Challenge to collect money for a wheelchair for her husband Markus.

Those of us not as fit, fast, athletic or just lazy, but who still want to participate - we're doing the SOCIAL RUN!

Social Run Detail

This is open to anybody that wants to support Chantel; wants to go up Lions Head, or just wants an enjoyable morning out! Everyone and anyone is welcome!

We'll meet at 5:20am at Signal Hill (going up Lions Head to watch the sunrise), ready to start at 5:30am.

Expect to be on the mountain 90-120 minutes.

And for those that want a longer run... up Kloof Nek corner, Platteklip to Maclears and down again.

Some fitness is required for this route, as you will be on the mountain some 2 hours more.

These will be run as pack runs - we all stay together and re-group.

Very Important: Make sure you have enough food and hydration, as well as weather dependant clothes.

Bring some beers and Sterries and socialise afterward.

Chantel's event detail is here:

Below are some selected portions of her post:

We’re encouraging you to participate in this charity event. We’re not setting anyone up for failure (In the past when doing endurance charity events, I’ve seen people perform incredible feats - just by being given half a chance).

The driving force for the weekend should be about raising enough money to give Markus wheels... it’s not just about 13 peaks (or joining for your own personal fitness or training goals) - it’s going to be an adventure.

Chantel is encouraging everyone participating to try to contribute at least R500 (ask friends and family). It will be great to share the experience with others with their hearts in the right place.

Dale Symons (Chantel's trusted navigator) has done his homework. Their goal - 22 hours. We have a general pacing guideline, resulting in us not being able to wait for people at masts or “water points”.

Due to the fact that it’s a charity event, we have no idea how many people to expect. Each athlete will therefore be in charge of their own nutrition and water, sunblock, etc.

A few of the 13 Peak runners  will be running with SPOT trackers. Chantel  will share the link with all of you, so that friends and family can know where you are, if they’re keen to support.

Start: 07:00 at Kloof Nek parking lot

Route: It's getting closer... The Cat Run is going down next week and this is your last opportunity to train!.

From the parking lot we follow the t*r up towards the bottom of Platteklip; slog all the way to the top, tag Maclear's Beacon only if you want to, return the same way and head back along the t*r until we reach the parking lot. From the parking lot, we cross Kloof Nek road and take the single track leading towards the jeep track. Hooking a left we ascend Lion's Head. Back down the same way, finishing in the parking lot where we started.

Distance: 15km (without Maclear's Beacon); 20km (with Maclear's Beacon)

Leader: It's a "race"...

Important Notes

Dress in weather appropriate and proper trail running gear. Must include a proper windproof (waterproof if raining) jacket. Carry plenty of water and energy snacks. You are running voluntarily and entirely at your own risk. If you run ahead of the group you will be deemed to have left the group and are on your own. Unfortunately, no dogs allowed. Bring plenty of ICE cold beers for after.

Durbac-CMC Pack Run (Sunday): All runners welcome.  Not just for Durbac and CMC members.
