GREAT HIMALAYA TRAIL – SLIDE SHOW – MCSA – 6 JUNE 2016

The Great Himalaya Trail with Andrew Porter.

Andrew has climbed big, remote walls in far flung parts of the world. He also runs, rather well, breaking the world for the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) by 20 days!

In Sept/Oct 2016, Andrew ran the Nepal stretch of the GHT, travelling from West to East and covering 1400km in
under 29 days. He crossed a number of 5000m passes, and at the other extreme dropped to below 300m at one point. He moved through snow, jungles, rice paddies and passed by remote villages and bustling towns.

Join us and spread the world

NEW MELKBOS TRAIL EVENT FOR WONDERFUL CHARITY – THE FALLEN ANGELS TRAIL RUN – 19 AUGUST 2017

The gang from Melkbos are organizing an event on behalf of Fallen Angels Rescue Centre. We will have a 5km fun walk/run and a 15km farm challenge. No major hills, one river, some sand - but glorious views of Table Mountain. All proceeds are going to Fallen Angels.

https://entryninja.com/events/event/18722-fallen-angels-fast-flat

Looking to run a fast course, but don't feel like hitting the tar? Come join us in the beautiful Koeberg, on the old historic farm of VAATJIE on the 19th of August for a farm run! Choose between a more challenging 15km or an easy family-friendly 5km walk/run.

Your efforts will be rewarded by beautiful canola fields with Table Mountain as a backdrop! For good measure, we will add just a little bit of sand, maybe a river crossing or two – possibly just one small hill and to finish it off, a medal at the end!

All of this will be in support of Fallen Angels Pet Rescue Centre outside Melkbosstrand – so come run the trails for tails and support this wonderful cause!

The objective of this day is to raise much needed funds for Fallen Angels to cover their veterinary expenses, maintain their current structures and build upgraded wards for their animals (such as isolation wards for sick animals). All the proceeds of the event will go to Fallen Angels

The event will include vendors, lucky draws, food stalls and children's entertainment. A 5km fun run and fun ride is also planned for the children, as high focus will remain on involving the youth with our mission and path forward.

The race will start and end at Vaatjie Kleine Zoute Farm (on the old Darling Road, 18km from Melkbosstrand

Fast and Flat Farm Challenge – 8am

5km Fun Run – 8:15am

Fallen Angels (NPO 133-448) is based outside Melkbosstrand and since 2014, has been playing an active part of the greater community, to save and improve the living conditions of animals in their immediate surroundings, while maintaining their rehabilitation. This may involve re-homing animals who are unwanted, unloved or lost. As children are our future, we believe in incorporating them in the rehabilitation of our animals – this acts as therapy not only for the dogs, but also for the children - we always encourage positive interaction between our rescues and children. This builds a base of love, trust and respect in both the rescue and the child, for one another, but also for any relationships to follow.

15km – R100

5km – R40

Address: Vaatjie Farm, R304 (Old Darling Road towards Atlantis), Melkbosstrand

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING GROUPS

LONGER DISTANCE GROUP

Please join Table Mountain Trailers.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS (K-WAY VOB MEDIUM DISTANCE GROUP)

MUIZENBERG PEAK

This week sees us summiting Muizenberg Peak, an objective that hasn't often been achieved by the Medium and Slower Trailers.

Also The Fasties get to take on a superb ridge line, off the beaten track.

Rendezvous and Start Time

"Toad On the Road" parking, corner of Main Road and Boyes Drive, Lakeside, 7h15am ready to start 7h30am (We will catch the first rays of sun as we head up the mountain at 7h44am)

Route Summary:

Fast Group:  Toad– Boyes Drive -  Steenberg Plateau Path – Muizenberg Peak – Old Silver Mine – St James Peak – Muizenberg Cave – Fat Lady's Cave – Higher Steenberg Peak – Boyes Drive  - Toad

Medium Group: Toad– Boyes Drive -  Steenberg Plateau Path – Muizenberg Peak – Old Mine – St James Peak – Muizenberg Cave –  Lower Steenberg Peak – Boyes Drive  - Toad

Route description:

Medium and Fast Group:

From the Toad we run along Boyes Drive past Lakeside Pinnacle. At the Steenberg Plateau path (marked by TMNP signboard) we head on up the mountain.

As Steenberg Plateau comes into view, take the path to the left heading up to Muizenberg Peak.

From Muizenberg Peak continue down to the top of Peck's Valley and at the 4 way junction we keep straight, staying on the plateau.

At the next junction, where the path ahead becomes indistinct with a more obvious sandy path to the left, turn left. This route takes us past the old silver mine (see the wire fence) to which the area owes its name.

Past the mine the path leads us up, into the rocks. At the next junction continue straight on, to St James peak.

From St James' summit, we back track and at the fork take the left hand path, heading towards Muizenberg Cave.

From the cave we head down the valley with Steenberg Plateau on our right.

Upon meeting the jeep track, take a right turn to follow it and continue on until reaching the turnoff to Higher Steenberg Peak, marked by a handy metal plaque.

Here the Fast Group will head out to the Fat Lady's Cave / Higher Steenberg Peak.

At the junction where you see erosion fencing behind you, take the right hand fork (red gravel path) leading directly to Fat Lady's Cave.

Just past the cave, take the right hand path towards the large cairn which marks the viewpoint.

At this cairn there is a small unmarked path leading down the ridge line to your right. Follow this path, it leads back to Steenberg Plateau providing lovely running and some great views of Cape Town to your left.

This path end amongst some rocks behind  one of the fenced off navy communication structures. Go around the fence to meet a Jeep track and turn right there.

Ignore all other turnoffs until you reach a clear junction. Here, take a left turn onto the single track path which will lead you back up the neck between Lower Steenberg and Muizenberg Peaks.

Head back to the Toad via Boyes Drive.

From  the point where we leave the Fast Group, the Medium Group will continue straight along the Jeep Track, passing around the fenced off Navy Communication Tower.

Where the jeep track forks, keep left.  Turn Right onto the small single track leading up Lower Steenberg Peak, backtracking once again after making the summit. Turn left back onto the jeep track, and continue straight until you reach the Muizenberg Peak path to your left. Head up over the rise and down, back to Boyes and the Toad.

The Slower Group will follow a  similar route up to Muizenberg Peak. The leader will decide the route forwards from there on the day.

Distance and Time

Fast Group  +/- 14.4km

Medium Group  +/-  12.2km

Slower Group +/- 8km

Should take around 2.5hrs

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  (Not operating at the moment) Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 15km – 25km of technical, tough trail at a medium to medium fast pace.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.  For more info contact Peter Rogers (p.d.n.rogers@gmail.com ).

  • K-Way VOB Monday Evening City Bowl Group:  Every second Monday evening from Kloof Nek car park.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  8 – 10kms and most paces can be accommodated.  Nothing too technical.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.   For more info contact Michael Ohlsson on 0823197250.

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  All runners welcome.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.  For more info contact Rod Prodgers at rodprodgers@icloud.com or Christo Steyn at trailrunner@sobonana.co.za or Ezan Wilson at ezanwilson@gmail.com .

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers

MATES PILCHARDS TRAIL RUN – SATURDAY 27 MAY 2017

This is a MATES club training run but all runners are welcome .  It is a run that is intended to assist those runners who are doing the Old Fisherman’s Trail Challenge to familiarise themselves with the route and terrain so that you can give the race a full go on race day with a reduced concern of getting lost en route

It is an approximately 20km trail run from Hout Bay Yacht Club, ending at the Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club (not the Sailing Club).

The Route

The route goes across the Hout Bay Beach, up Chapman’s Peak Drive to East Fort where you turn onto the mountain.  Up Blackburn Ravine, down into Silvermine North/West to the dam, down the River Walk to Ou Kaapseweg.  Across into Silvermine South/East, down the gravel road to the Old Fisherman’s Trail, on to Crassula Ridge path, Amphitheatre / Echo Valley, Boyes Drive, Main Road to Fish Hoek beach, along the beach to the finish  It should be spring tides so hope that it is low tide.

Start Time

07h00.  If it’s cloudy it will be dark for the first 15 – 30 minutes, so carry a torch if you feel you will need it to cross the beach and the first bit of the climb.

Important to Note

  • You need to be totally self-sufficient.  There are no water stations or aid stations.  This is a club training run.
  • You must be dressed in proper, weather-appropriate trail running gear.  Carry everything you will need on the day. This includes a basic medical kit, space blanket, whistle, windproof (waterproof if it is raining) jacket, warm headgear if it's cold or sun protection if it's hot. Charged cell phone with Mike Ohlsson’s number (0823197250) stored as well as the City’s emergency ops number (021 480 7700) and the SANParks Visitor Safety number (0861 106 417) programmed in.  Just in case you need rescuing.  Although there will be no formal kit check, because this is not a race or event, if it appears that you are completely inadequately kitted out you will be asked not to run.  This applies to all club runs.
  • You MUST carry your SANParks Wildcard with you OR have sufficient cash to pay the entrance fees to each of the two Silvermine areas you pass through.  Keep about R100 on you if you need to pay.  This should be more than enough.
  • But also carry enough Cash for some drinks and snacks at the finish.
  • There are no pace groups.  Groups form naturally along the way.  But each runner is free to run their own pace.  There will be lots of people running who do know the route if you don’t.  Stick with one of them.  Paul Whitmill will sweep the route.
  • Some car admin is necessary because the start and finish are in completely different places.  You are ultimately responsible for arranging your own transport although a co-operative effort may be arranged closer to the time.
  • Contrary to earlier communication, please DO NOT bring your own beers, other drinks and food to the finish.  The Surf Lifesaving club will have hot and cold food for sale as well as drinks.  They are providing us with a great finish venue so please support them accordingly.
