K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: GENERAL TRAIL RUNS

Hi Everyone

TRAIL SHOP

TRAIL RUNS FOR THIS COMING WEEK

TUESDAY 12 DECEMBER 2017

TUESDAY TRAILS

Newlands Forest car park.

17h45 for 18h00 start.

3 / 4 pace groups.

WEDNESDAY 13 DECEMBER 2017

CRAG / CSAG / CWAG TRAIL RUN / SHUFFLE / WALK (FINAL RUN FOR THE YEAR)

This Wednesday 13 December we’ll gather after the run/shuffle/walk at Constantia Nek for drinks, snacks, conversation, “war stories” and a few laughs; bring chairs, rugs, the odd camping table or two, the family, kids . . . whatever you need to spend a comfortable hour or so chilling with your trail running friends. As is usual for this occasion, I would like to appeal to ALL the old stalwarts and founders of CRAG to join us if at all possible; even if you don't run, shuffle or walk with one of the groups, please come and have a drink and socialize with us — it will be great to have your company!

Then we take a break for the holiday season, convening again for the regular Wednesday run/shuffle/walk on 10 January 2018.

Date: Wednesday 13 December 2017

Time: ready to go at 5.45 pm

Leaders: Geoff Nell (combined run and shuffle), Christo Steyn (walk)

Location: Cecilia Forest from Constantia Nek (see below, Directions)

Route description: From the usual starting point in the Constantia Nek parking area (see below, Starting point and Directions) we go up the last remaining stretch of Rhodes’ Road (yes, THAT Rhodes), the route he had constructed to visit his far-flung land holdings on the eastern slopes of the mountain, stretching from today’s Groote Schuur Hospital as far as Constantia Nek; then we’ll continue on the contour path to enjoy an hour or so of relaxed running on jeep track and hiking path through Cecilia Forest (named for that same CECIL John Rhodes) before returning to the start/finish for end of year celebrations (see above). Sunset is at 7.52 pm.

Duration and distance: approx 60 mins, approx 8 km

Shufflers: Geoff Nell will lead a slower, more relaxed run, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Please note that the normal CSAG pace, whilst slower than the runner group, is intended to get the heart rate up and the lungs pumping, and provide a good work-out for those who, for whatever reason, don't run quite as quickly as they once used to. Shufflers are advised to bring/wear the appropriate kit (see below, Equipment).

Walkers: Christo Steyn will lead the walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Please note that the normal CWAG pace is quite fast — the walk is not intended to be a gentle stroll in the park; it will get the heart rate up and the lungs pumping, and provide a good work-out for those who, for whatever reason, don't run. Walkers are advised to bring/wear the appropriate kit (see below, Equipment).

Starting point: Constantia Nek parking area (click for Google Maps)

Directions: From the M3 (heading south or north), take the M41 Constantia/Hout Bay Main Road exit and head up to the Nek, or from the Newlands area take the M63 Rhodes Avenue past Kirstenbosch and Cecilia Forest all the way to the Nek. From Hout Bay, just head up the road to the Nek. Park under the pines across the road from the restaurant.

Equipment

—           headlamp/torch for your own comfort

—           water/energy drink/munchies

—           weather-appropriate clothing/gear: long-range forecast for 6 pm would have us believe it’s going to be partly cloudy, no rain, 17 °C, light breeze SW 7 kph

—           personal medication (if required)

—           something liquid for post-run rehydrate session

—           warmer/dry clothing for the rehydrate session

CELTICS THURSDAY SUMMER TRAIL RUNS

On Thursday 14th December, we meet at Newlands Forest for the run to start at 18h00. We do our Plumpudding Hill run which will start at Newlands Forest in the parking area at the Parks Board office / helipad / firebase (the parking area is the main parking area off the M3 – 700 metres north of the big M3 / Blue Route intersection with Rhodes Drive / Newlands Avenue, and about 1.2kms south of the southern end of UCT).

The route takes in Newlands Forest out to the beacon on Plumpudding Hill, down Heartbreak Hill on the slopes of Devil’s Peak and back the lower route above Rhodes Memorial.

Difficulty grading 6/10.

Distance is 9.5km with about 450m total ascent and descent.

Fast, Fast-Medium, Medium and Medium-slow pace options available, each with an experienced group leader to cater for different speeds, so provided you can run a flat 10kms in less than 65 minutes, there will be a group for you.

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially.

Thanks

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING GROUPS

LONGER DISTANCE GROUP

No run this week or for the rest of the year.  This group will start again in the new year on 13 January 2017.  Watch the emails for details.  But on 6 January 2018 there will be the traditional annual “trail runners trying to run tar” at the Fry’s Hohenort 15km WPA road race to wake the legs up.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS (K-WAY VOB MEDIUM DISTANCE GROUP)

Final Run of the Year and Picnic Breakfast

For our final run of the year we will do the scenic Signal Hill route in a clockwise direction followed by our customary end of year picnic breakfast in the tranquil Green Park

Rendezvous and Start Time

We meet in the Green Point Light House parking area in time to be ready to start running at 0630

Route

From the parking area we run along the promenade and then up Glengariff Road to the very top where we turn left though the belt of trees and up and around the Noon Gun Battery.

Then up to the trail that runs above Signal Hill Rd and follow it all the way to the Kloof Nek circle. Down Kloof Road for about 400m to the footpath that leads off right up the side off Lion's Head. Follow this single track trail as it runs around the flanks of Lion's Head and above Clifton all the way to just below the Kramat.

From here take the Lion's Head path as it descends down the North western flank of Signal Hill through the belt of trees back to the top of Glengarith Rd. Immediately turn right onto Springbok Rd, run past the mega rich folks houses and make your way down through the houses over High-Level Road down and across Main Road to the Virgin Active Health Club and through Green Park back to the start. Distance about 14km taking 2 to 2.5 hours [See Google Earth image below.]

Medium Group have the option of cutting out the drop down to Kloof Nek Circle and Kloof Road rather taking the direct route around Lion's head.

Relaxed Group will turn at the Kramat

After the Run

Collect your goodies and walk back through the Green Point Park West Gate to our picnic site on the lawn on your right. [See Google Earth Image below]

What to Bring

Water, whistle, warm, wind or waterproof top depending on weather plus your space blanket and ICE information, AND your favourite picnic eats and drink for the picnic after the run.

Sorry no dogs are allowed on our runs.

See you all there

K-Way VOB Trail Run Warning: Trail running is inherently more dangerous than road running. It may take place over uneven hazard strewn trails in exposed and often remote terrain where help is not always readily available.

Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk as although the organizers take reasonable precautions to ensure runner safety, it cannot be guaranteed. To this end neither the Club nor the organisers personally can be held liable for any claims relating to inter alia, injuries, disabilities and death. Further any minor child participating in any trail running activity will be deemed to be doing so with the consent of his or her guardian.

By starting out on a trail run you explicitly acknowledge that:

1] you understand the associated risks involved and accept full responsibility for your own safety.

2] you are medically and physically fit to participate and

3] are carrying the necessary water, clothing and safety equipment required for the particular run.

SUNDAY 17 DECEMBER 2017

MATES RUN

Start 06h30 at Constantia Nek car park.

Route:  Contour path to the King’s Blockhouse.  Up to the Devil’s Peak middle contour path and around to The Saddle.  Across the Saddle, down Newlands Ravine and back to Contantia Nek along the contour path.

Leader:  Dale Symons 082 8513949

Notes:

• Take your own water and snacks.
• All runners are welcome.
• You need to be completely self-sufficient. Carry everything you will need on the day. This includes a basic medical kit, space blanket, whistle, windproof (waterproof if it is raining) jacket, warm headgear if it's cold or sun protection if it's hot. Charged cell phone with Mike’s number (0823197250) stored as well as the City’s emergency ops number (021 480 7700) and the SANParks Visitor Safety number (0861 106 417) programmed in. Just in case you need rescuing.
• You are also responsible for your own water and nutrition. There is little to no water on the mountain and, for the roadies, there are no water stations. You MUST carry your own.

More important:
Bring ice cold beers for after.

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

· K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group: (Not operating at the moment) Saturday mornings. All runners welcome. Not just for club members. This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 15km – 25km of technical, tough trail at a medium to medium fast pace. For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

· K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers: Saturday mornings. All runners welcome. Not just for club members. There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure. For more info contact Peter Rogers (p.d.n.rogers@gmail.com ).

  • K-Way VOB Monday Evening City Bowl Group: Every second Monday evening from Kloof Nek car park. All runners welcome. Not just for club members. 8 – 10kms and most paces can be accommodated. Nothing too technical. For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

· MATES: Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs. All runners welcome. Not just for club members. Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners. Helps to be a beer drinker. For more info contact Michael Ohlsson on 0823197250.

· CRAG / CSAG / CWAG: Wednesday evenings. All runners welcome. A pack run that caters for most trail runners. Not what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join. Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you. The running group has recently been split in two. CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group. CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains. For more info contact Rod Prodgers at rodprodgers@icloud.com or Christo Steyn at trailrunner@sobonana.co.za or Ezan Wilson at ezanwilson@gmail.com .

· Celtics: Thursday evenings. All runners welcome. Not just for club members. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO RUN 10km IN 65 MINUTES. 4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast. If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time. A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join. This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: WEEKEND WRAP UP

Hi Everyone

SATURDAY 9 DECEMBER 2017

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING GROUPS

LONGER DISTANCE GROUP

No run this week as many will be attending the MATES Annual Chairman’s Run which is on Saturday instead of their normal Sunday run. Details in email tomorrow.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS (K-WAY VOB MEDIUM DISTANCE GROUP)

Sirkelsvlei - Shipwreck Route in Cape Point Nature Reserve Entrance Fee(R145), Green Card or Wild Card

This week is our second last official run for the year! We will be doing the Sirkelsvlei-Shipwreck Route starting from the Olifantsbos parking lot in Cape Point Nature Reserve. Please remember to bring entrance fee (R145) if you don't have a My Green Card or a Wildcard. (A My Green Card costs R135 for 12 entrances, so you will have paid for your investment in one Cape Point visit! )

Rendezvous and Start Time

We meet in the parking lot at Olifantsbos at 6:30 ready to start running around 6:45am. The gate to the park opens at 6am and there is a 12km drive to Olifantsbos.

Terrain and Distance

The route is a circular 10,5km with the option of an out and back at Sirkelsvlei. All groups will take the same route at various paces .

This time we will do the route in reverse, starting up the climb to Sirkelsvlei and returning via the beach. At Sirkelsvlei, the out and back follows the Cape Point Hiking Trail path to the Mountain bike path and back adding an extra 4km (ignore the arrows on the map, we will go in the opposite direction)

Terrain is a mixture of rocky single track, flowing single track and beach. A nice relaxed run in stunning surroundings

What to bring

Water, whistle, warm, wind or waterproof top depending on weather plus your space blanket and ICE information, and entrance fee . Entrance fee is R 145pp. If you don't have a Green Card, try and get one. Or WhatsApp the group and I'm sure someone will have some spare entrances. WildCard also accepted

Important: Please remember to look behind you at every turn in the route to make sure the people behind you see which way you are going.

Leaders of each group will ensure that no-one is left behind

How to get there

The entrance to Cape Point Nature Reserve is on the left as you get to the top of the Smitswinkel hill from the Simonstown direction.

After paying at the entrance to Cape Point, follow the road for 2,5km and turn right at the Olifantsbos turn off. Follow this road, turning left at the T-junction, until you come to the parking area.

No Dogs allowed on our runs .

MATES ANNUAL CEO’S RUN FOLLOWED BY THEIR AGM (PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A SATURDAY RUN)

ALL RUNNERS WELCOME (DESPITE THE AGM AFTERWARDS) AND THERE WILL BE A WALKING GROUP TOO.

The theme is Christmas-ish. You are encouraged to embrace the theme and dress up. Marcy has booked the “Christmas Fairy” theme for herself. Mike will be Santa Clause or Christmas Borat (with sunblock this time). Spencer is The Grinch. Tim is Scrooge

Start Time and Place

07h00 from Constantia Nek car park

Route

Start at the Nek and start heading up Constantia Corner by the short cut steps as far as Eagles nest (the first low peak on the left). Turn left and continue up the Constantia Corner path and then take the traverse around into Agatha’s Gully. Up Agatha’s Gully (some very mild, easy rock scrambling) and re-join the Constantia Corner / Bel Ombre path. Past Camel Rock to the concrete road at the De Villiers Dam. Turn left onto the concrete road and first major path right onto the Puffer path. Left up Ash Valley to the Woodhead Dam. Turn right before reaching the concrete road again and head down Nursery Valley until you reach the Puffer Path again. Right onto the Puffer Path and back to the Overseers Hut. Left onto the concrete Road and left down Cecilia Ridge to the Rooikat Ravine path. Make your way down to the jeep track where you turn right and head back to Constantia Nek car park.

However, you are welcome to do a shortened version of this route if you like. But you MUST do Agatha’s Gully. We will generally all stick together going up here. J

Distance and Time

About 15km max in about 2.5 hours

Just in case you need rescuing.
• You are also responsible for your own water and nutrition. There is little to no water on the mountain and, for the roadies, there are no water stations. You MUST carry your own.

More important:
Bring ice cold beers for after although MATES traditionally hands out a few at this time of year.

The MATES AGM happens straight after the run. This has spectator value too. So stick around and watch, even if you are not a member. If you are a MATES member, come and ask some of those questions you’ve always wanted to ask the committee. There is some dispute as to whether the co-founder and CEO is actually a member or not. Unlike any AGM you have ever seen. This will be followed by drinks and snacks.

Tim is Scrooge (NOT Tiny Tim).

Turn left onto the concrete road and first right onto the Puffer path. Make you’re your way down to the jeep track where you turn left and head back to Constantia Nek car park.

However, you are welcome to do a shortened version of this route if you like.  But you MUST do Agatha’s Gully.  We will generally all stick together going up here. J

Distance and Time

About 15km in about 2.5 hours

Bring ice cold beers for after although MATES traditionally hands out a few at this time of year.

The MATES AGM happens straight after the run.  This has spectator value too.  So stick around and watch, even if you are not a member.  If you are a MATES member, come and ask some of those questions you’ve always wanted to ask the committee.  There is some dispute as to whether the co-founder and CEO is actually a member or not.  Unlike any AGM you have ever seen.  This will be followed by drinks and snacks.

Cheers
