K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: WEEKEND WRAP UP

Hi Everyone

SATURDAY 30 JULY 2016

K-WAY VOB LONGER DISTANCE TRAIL GROUP

We will join Table Mountain Trailers this coming weekend.  See details below.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS

Table Mountain North Face Traverse

Route
A straight forward out and back run along the scenic trail across the North Face of Table Mountain to Devil’s Peak or a little further (Oppelskop path) and return.

Rendezvous and Start Time
RV in the upper Kloof Nek parking area at the foot of Tafelberg Rd on your left just after you turn off at the circle. Ready to start at 07h30.

How to get there?
Drive up Kloof Nek Rd to the traffic circle at the top and follow the signs to the Cable Station. After turning left at the circle onto Tafelberg Rd you will see the parking area on your left, it has two levels, turn left into the upper level.

Terrain and Distance
A good fairly steep climb up to the upper contour path below Kloof Corner ridge then along the undulating single mountain contour trail which runs across the North face overlooking the City.  As opposed to returning via the boring tar road we turn back at Block house ridge and retrace our steps back to above the lower cableway station then descend down to Tafelberg Rd and follow it back to Kloof Nek.
Once up on the contour path there are a few modest gradients and most of it is along a single gravel and rocky trail with occasional precipitous short stretches but the route is easy to follow.  Distance about 12-14 kms taking more or less about 2hrs 30m

Medium Group
The recovery group will follow the same route but at a more modest pace.

Dogs
Please note that K-Way VOB club rules do not permit dogs on our runs.

What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top depending on weather.

By starting out on a trail run you explicitly acknowledge that: 1] you understand the associated risks involved and accept full responsibility for your own safety. 2] you are medically and physically fit to participate and 3] are carrying the necessary water, clothing and safety equipment required for the particular run.

ASSISTANCE REQUIRED AT TRAIL EVENT SUPPORT TABLES

Our group (K-Way VOB Trail Running) is organising support tables for two events later this year: Lipco Law for All PUFfeR (gate of the Cape Point Reserve) – 20 August 2016 and UTCT (Constantia Nek) – 10 December 2016.  Please would you give some thought to volunteering to help out.  It is not difficult work and is always fun.  Not just K-Way VOB members.  Anyone is welcome to come along and help.

  • For PUFfeR (20 August 2016) we need as many as possible to take down the names of the runners as they exit the park.  We have an ingenious new scheme to deal with this aspect which will make it extremely easy.  It is only for about an hour and then we go for a run in the reserve afterwards.

  • For UTCT (10 December 2016) we need at least 12 people at Constantia Nek.  It is a more reasonable time of the day and we get to see the Long Route and Medium Route runners come through.  Thank you Lisa Osrin and Malcolm Collins for volunteering so far.

More details closer to the time but please start thinking about it now; especially for UTCT as we need to register the names of the helpers with the organisers.  If yopu are happy to commit this far in advance I will happily take your names now.  Otherwise I will start nagging later in the year.

WEDNESDAY 27 JULY 2016

CRAG / CSAG / CWAG TRAIL RUN / SHUFFLE / WALK

Date:  Wednesday 27 July 2016

Time: ready to go at 5.45 pm sharp

Leaders: Paul Whitmill (run), Christo Steyn (shuffle), John Damata (walk)

Location: Devil's Peak from Chelmsford Road, Vredehoek (see below, Directions)

Route description: From the start in the Chelmsford Rd parking area we head up the jeep tracks, past the old cannons and across Tafelberg Rd on to the hiking paths above the road, eventually to enjoy some level running along the upper contour as it winds around the buttresses and through the ravines of Devil's Peak, heading for the Saddle Path; down here, across the t*r road again, and back to the start, steeply down this time. Sunset is at 6.04 pm, so you must bring your headlamp.

Duration and distance: approx 90 mins, approx 10 km

Shufflers: Christo Steyn will lead a slower, more relaxed run, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Please note that the normal CSAG pace, whilst slower than the runner group, is intended to get the heart rate up and the lungs pumping, and provide a good work-out for those who, for whatever reason, don't run quite as quickly as they once used to. Shufflers are advised to bring/wear the appropriate kit (see below, Equipment).

Walkers: John Damata will lead the walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Please note that the normal CWAG pace is quite fast — the walk is not intended to be a gentle stroll in the park; it will get the heart rate up and the lungs pumping, and provide a good work-out for those who, for whatever reason, don't run. Walkers are advised to bring/wear the appropriate kit (see below, Equipment).

Starting point:  Chelmsford Road, Devil's Peak (click for Google Maps)

Directions: Three options, detailed below (if they sound too complicated, just enter the address or Google Maps ref into your smartphone or similar navigational device — you ALL have one — and follow its directions). We meet at the end of Chelmsford Rd. Immediately past the Pinoak Rd turn-off, turn left onto the dirt track. If you arrive later, you may have to park on Chelmsford Rd itself — please don't park on red or yellow lines.

—    From the N1/FW de Klerk (previously Table Bay) Boulevard: Take the M60 Christiaan Barnard St (previously Oswald Pirow St) (City East) off-ramp and follow Christiaan Barnard past the Good Hope Centre and CPUT (formerly Cape Technikon). At the T-junction with Roeland St, turn left. Carry on past the Central Fire Station, under the overpass, and turn immediately right (across the M3/De Waal Dr) into Crassula Ave. Follow the white line steadily up, as Crassula becomes Ixia, Gardenia and Noordelik. At the stop sign turn left into Derry, which becomes Oak Tree. Turn left into Chelmsford.
—    From the N2: Keep left on Hospital Bend going up the hill and follow M3/De Waal Drive as it winds its way around Devil's Peak. When you reach the residential area, after a sweeping right and left s-bend, slow down and take the FIRST sharp left turn into Barnham Rd, which becomes Noordelik; heading generally up, cross a 4-way stop and a 3-way stop. At the next stop sign turn left, up, into Derry, which becomes Oak Tree. Turn left into Chelmsford.
—    From the city centre: Work your way up to and turn left into Orange/Annandale/Mill/Jutland (same road — it just depends on which section of it you reach). Drive past the Gardens Centre and where the double carriageway narrows to single, turn right into Clive, left into Aandblom, right into Chelsea, left into Upper Mill, which becomes Derry. Follow Derry, which eventually becomes Oak Tree. Turn left into Chelmsford.

Where: Western Cape

Start & Finish: De Hoop Collection, De Hoop Nature Reserve, Western Cape

Distance: 53km
Discipline: Trail Running

Entries Open: 1st November 2016

Entry Fee: R2500

Description: The Merrell Whale of Trail event, in partnership with Cape Nature, is the only opportunity each year for just 175 nature loving athletes to run hard on this iconic trail while treading lightly on the earth and has become a must-do for those who have already tackled the more conventional runs out there.

The 53km route takes runners on a journey from the Potberg nature reserve to Koppie Alleen in CapeNature's flagship De Hoop Nature Reserve. The first half winds through unique fynbos covered mountains with expansive views of the Breede River Valley and mouth and then descends to the enchanting Noetsie Bay, turning west and winding along the rocky shores of the Indian Ocean, with a mix of sandy beach and coasteering trails with the shining white dunes of the finish area teasingly and tantalisingly in sight.

Bang in the middle of whale season, runners are left wondering who is watching who as scores of the annual migratory cetaceans continually breach out the water, spy hopping and waving their fins at the passers-by. www.whaleoftrail.co.za

FAR AND WIDE SKY RUN 2016 - 10 DECEMBER 2016 (ZIMBABWE)

It's that time of year again where we open up The Turaco Trail (www.turacotrail.co.zw), Zimbabwe's iconic hiking trail to a very special type of person…. Trail Runners.

Since this is the second year that we are running the event I am sure that I do not have to stress the importance of your training leading up to the run. Safety is so important on an event like this, especially in the mountains of the Eastern Highlands. A good training program helps ensure that you are safe out there.

Having said this registration for the 2016 Sky Run is now open - Please note that the race is on the 10th of December this year.

I have attached the information pack below.

See our website www.farandwide.co.zw for more details; the registration form link and a downloadable PDF info pack.

To register please follow this link: http://goo.gl/forms/AU64cO6aAJVtdYB02

We are really looking forward to the Sky Run this year and know that you are too. Running through the mountains is an experience that not many get to experience in their lives.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the run.

I will be out of office until the 10th of July but will begin answering questions and sorting out the admin as soon as I get back.

This is your chance to get a team together if you are doing it as a relay or get yourself ready for what promises to be an awesome Far and Wide Wild Trails event.

Please forward this email to anyone that may be interested in participating in the event this year.

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 15km – 25km of technical, tough trail at a medium to medium fast pace.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.  For more info contact Peter Rogers (p.d.n.rogers@gmail.com ).

  • K-Way VOB Monday Evening City Bowl Group:  Every second Monday evening from Kloof Nek car park.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  8 – 10kms and most paces can be accommodated.  Nothing too technical.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.   For more info contact Antony Murray on Anthony@proofcc.co.za .

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  All runners welcome.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.  For more info contact Rod Prodgers at rodprodgers@icloud.com or Christo Steyn at trailrunner@sobonana.co.za or Ezan Wilson at ezanwilson@gmail.com .

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 30 JULY 2016

Good morning Everyone
