ASSISTANCE REQUIRED AT TRAIL EVENT SUPPORT TABLES

Our group (K-Way VOB Trail Running) is organising support tables for two events later this year: Lipco Law for All PUFfeR (gate of the Cape Point Reserve) – 20 August 2016 and UTCT (Constantia Nek) – 10 December 2016.  Please would you give some thought to volunteering to help out.  It is not difficult work and is always fun.  Not just K-Way VOB members.  Anyone is welcome to come along and help.

  • For PUFfeR (20 August 2016) we need as many as possible to take down the names of the runners as they exit the park.  We have an ingenious new scheme to deal with this aspect which will make it extremely easy.  It is only for about an hour and then we go for a run in the reserve afterwards.

  • For UTCT (10 December 2016) we need at least 12 people at Constantia Nek.  It is a more reasonable time of the day and we get to see the Long Route and Medium Route runners come through.  Thank you Lisa Osrin and Malcolm Collins for volunteering so far.

More details closer to the time but please start thinking about it now; especially for UTCT as we need to register the names of the helpers with the organisers.  If yopu are happy to commit this far in advance I will happily take your names now.  Otherwise I will start nagging later in the year.

WEDNESDAY 29 JUNE 2016

CRAG / CSAG / CWAG TRAIL RUN / SHUFFLE / WALK

Date:  Wednesday 29 June 2016

Time: ready to go at 5.45 pm sharp

Leaders: Freda Walters (run), John Damata (shuffle), Christo Steyn (walk)

Location: Pipe Track (see below, Directions)

Route description: Starting from the Kloof Nek parking area, we head across the road, up the steps, and out along the Pipe Track overlooking Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to the west — if you squint and look just above the horizon, you may be lucky to catch a glimpse of the lights of Cabo Frio (just to the east of Buenos Aires) . . . ; at Slangolie Ravine, or just beyond, the runners turn around and head back to the parking area. Sunset is at 5.48 pm, so you must bring your headlamp.

Duration and distance: approx 90 mins, approx 9 km

Shufflers: John Damata will lead a slower, more relaxed run, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Please note that the normal CSAG pace, whilst slower than the runner group, is intended to get the heart rate up and the lungs pumping, and provide a good work-out for those who, for whatever reason, don't run quite as quickly as they once used to. Shufflers are advised to bring/wear the appropriate kit (see below, Equipment).

Walkers: Christo Steyn will lead the walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Please note that the normal CWAG pace is quite fast — the walk is not intended to be a gentle stroll in the park; it will get the heart rate up and the lungs pumping, and provide a good work-out for those who, for whatever reason, don't run. Walkers are advised to bring/wear the appropriate kit (see below, Equipment).

Starting point:  Kloof Nek parking area (click for Google Maps)

Directions: Get to Kloof Nek via Buitengracht and Kloof Nek Rd (from the city) or Geneva Drive / Camps Bay Drive or Kloof Rd (from Camps Bay), or simply follow the M62 / cable car / hiking signs up to Kloof Nek. At the circle, turn onto Tafelberg Rd, skip the first entrance to the parking area, which is now the stop and turnaround area for the MyCiti shuttle, and use the second one to park at the highest level (at the SANParks info office).

THURSDAY 30 JUNE 2016

CELTICS THURSDAY WINTER TRAIL RUNS

On Thursday 30th June we meet at Newlands Forest for the Contour Path run to start at 18h00. Meet in the parking area at the Newlands forest Parks Board office / helipad / firebase (the parking area is the main parking area off the M3 – 700 metres north of the big M3 / Blue Route intersection with Rhodes Drive / Newlands Avenue, and about 1.2kms south of the southern end of UCT).

We head up and left into Newlands Forest, initially following uphill jeep tracks for the first 2 km's, before we reach a rusted sign pointing to "Contour Path". We head up this attractive path which includes some steps and which will lead us up to the contour path. We then turn right heading along the contour path all the way to the turnstile below the blockhouse. As we reach the turnstile, we turn sharp right and head down a single track path, which after about 800 metres links up with the jeep track. This heads steadily down into Newlands Forest again, and back to the start.

 Some characteristics of this run:

-          The first 2.5 km's are mainly steady uphill, with some steps, but all on great quality running surface.

-          Once we reach the contour path, there are some technical rocky and stony sections along the contour path, particularly over the first km of this section. But most of it thereafter is 3-4kms of easy level running all the way to the turnstile below the blockhouse.

-          Some sections of the run take place on boardwalks which can be slippery when wet.  Please take care on this section!

-          When we turn down from the turnstile, the initial 800 metre downhill section is uneven and technical – ankle-roll territory – so watch your footing here and walk if you need to.

-          The rest is easy flowing; smooth running downhill to the finish.

 Difficulty grading: 7.5/10

 Distance is ±8 km's.

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. Thanks

SUNDAY 3 JULY 2016

MATES SUNDAY TRAIL RUN

TBA

Details to follow later.

Also on Sunday

Durbac-CMC Paarl Rock Pack Run

Leisurely Paarl Rock – fun day on the trails!
When: Sunday, 3 July
Meet: Paarl Rock – Meulwater Botanical Garden braai area
It is about 45 minutes drive from Durbanville. The last stretch of road is jeep track. Completely driveable, just slow going. So don't get caught by this section and end up being late.
To get to the dirt road, drive as-if you're going to the Afrikaans Taalmonument. Halfway up the hill, there is a turn-off to the right onto the dirt road. It is sign-posted, and just before the LiquiFruit amphitheatre.
Time: Meet at 7:30am, ready to run by 7:45am.
Distance and Time:
Long group: 20-25 km, 3-3 ½ hours.
Medium: 17-20 km, long and slow, 3-3 ½ hours
Short: 12-14 km, shorter and slow, 3–3 ½ hours
Where: Paarl Mountain Reserve
Entrance is free
What to bring: You are going to be on the mountain for at least 3 hours, probably longer. So carry water – there is very little running water once in the centre of the reserve. 1 litre at least, but preferably 2 litres or more. And something to snack on. You expend energy and need to replace it.
The weather seems to indicate clear but cool conditions. A windbreaker is always a must. And wear a long shirt of some sort. Some headgear (leave the helmet, a buff will do), gloves if you like.

And of course - beers and/or OBS for afterwards
Contact: Conrad – 081 470 5370

We all start with the nice climb from the waterfall a kilometre or so from the parking area, to the jeep track in the centre of the reserve.

The long can then decide at this point to turn right, and throw in a nice extra loop that increases the kilometre reading by about 4/5km. It does include some spectacular views towards Rheboskloof and later Fairview. The long route keeps above the dams, arriving at Krismiskamp. From there we take the outer loop, dropping down some nice single track. The price you pay for this is the climb afterwards, back up to the granite rock. Climb the rock, do the selfies, and then a leisurely downhill to the picnic spot where we started.

The medium group will turn left onto the jeep track. Turn off on Marathon Loop (it's much shorter than the name suggests, trust me!) jeep track and then also make your way to Krismiskamp. From there the choice is to make a bee-line for the Rock, or also do some single track and subsequent climbing. Either way, climb the rock, take even more selfies, break the internet and make your way down to the picnic area.

The short also turn left onto the jeep track. But they will ignore Marathon Loop, as the name just seems too much of a coincidence. Instead, you sneakily make your way to Krismiskamp (if they can find it this time!) to arrive before any of the other groups. Aim for the rock, climb up the rock, help break the internet and make your way all the way downhill to the picnic area where we started.

Note: This run replaces the Helderberg route as shown on the planning roster. After berating myself all the way up the brutal limb of Chappies Neck to Silvermine Ridge this Sunday past, my legs have refused any idea of another relentless climb. Therefore we'll have to do Helderberg some other time…

Description: The Merrell Whale of Trail event, in partnership with Cape Nature, is the only opportunity each year for just 175 nature loving athletes to run hard on this iconic trail while treading lightly on the earth and has become a must-do for those who have already tackled the more conventional runs out there.

The 53km route takes runners on a journey from the Potberg nature reserve to Koppie Alleen in CapeNature's flagship De Hoop Nature Reserve. The first half winds through unique fynbos covered mountains with expansive views of the Breede River Valley and mouth and then descends to the enchanting Noetsie Bay, turning west and winding along the rocky shores of the Indian Ocean, with a mix of sandy beach and coasteering trails with the shining white dunes of the finish area teasingly and tantalisingly in sight.

Bang in the middle of whale season, runners are left wondering who is watching who as scores of the annual migratory cetaceans continually breach out the water, spy hopping and waving their fins at the passers-by. www.whaleoftrail.co.za

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 15km – 25km of technical, tough trail at a medium to medium fast pace.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.  For more info contact Peter Rogers (p.d.n.rogers@gmail.com ).

  • K-Way VOB Monday Evening City Bowl Group:  Every second Monday evening from Kloof Nek car park.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  8 – 10kms and most paces can be accommodated.  Nothing too technical.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.   For more info contact Antony Murray on Anthony@proofcc.co.za .

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  All runners welcome.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.  For more info contact Rod Prodgers at rodprodgers@icloud.com or Christo Steyn at trailrunner@sobonana.co.za or Ezan Wilson at ezanwilson@gmail.com .

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 2 JULY 2016

Hi Everyone

TRAIL NOTICE

An incident from last Thursday reported by Robyn Johnston:

“Just to give people a heads up, particularly any Citi Golf drivers out there -

Unfortunately tonight while running the Lion's Head loop our car was broken into and personal belongings stolen.  We were parked at the start of the pipe track (on tafelberg road opposite the lower parking lot).  I know this used to be quite a hot spot and I usually avoid parking there, but it had seemed to be better recently.  Again unfortunately, while we usually never take belongings along, we had a dinner with friends to go straight to after our run and so left bags in the boot (out of sight) with jackets, wallet, etc inside all of which were stolen.

The car is a citi golf and there were no signs of forced entry at all, the police (and us) therefore wonder if the thieves might have a master key of sorts that allowed them entry into the car.

Bags were stolen from the boot, and my (other) car key was left on the back seat and the back seat doors were left unlocked.  All doors and boot were locked manually when we left the car.

This happened between 1730 and 1830 tonight.   “

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SUPPLEMENTARY EMAIL WITH UPDATED INFORMATION

Hi Everyone

There will be no email to this email group this Friday as I will be attending client meetings in Hermanus.   (okay I will be playing golf in Hermanus).  Table Mountain Trailers will send out their usual confirmation email on Thursday / Friday.  Barring a global disaster (excluding Brexit), you can pretty much count on that run being on though.  Refer to Tuesday email for details.

Mike Ohlsson has pointed out in his usual, none-too-gentle fashion, that I had botched the CRAG details for this afternoon (just the directions to the start).  So here is the official CRAG email:

WEDNESDAY 22 JUNE 2016

“Date:  Wednesday 22 June 2016

Time: ready to go at 5.45 pm sharp

Leaders: Dirk McIntosh (run), Sandy Young (shuffle), Robin Lawrence (walk)

Location: Vlakkenberg Circuit (see below, Directions)

Route description: Starting from the Constantia Nek parking area, we head across the road, down the hill and into the estate behind the construction site that recently was — and it is hoped, soon will be again — the Constantia Nek restaurant; now we take the hiking trail up the Vlakkenberg and do a circuit via a selection of yet to be disclosed paths, returning to the parking area after about 90 mins of invigorating exhilarating trail running. Sunset is at 5.46 pm, so you must bring your headlamp.

Duration and distance: approx 90 mins, approx 9 km

Shufflers: Sandy Young will lead a slower, more relaxed run, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration.

Walkers: Robin Lawrence will lead the walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration.

SUNDAY 26 JUNE 2016

MATES SUNDAY TRAIL RUN – 26 JUNE 2016

Looks pretty good.

1st Leg of the Hout Bay Challenge

(Dale is also running the second leg for those who want to do the extra distance)

Venue:

Murales Munchies (Hout Bay Yacht Club)

Route:

From the Harbour, we head to the bottom of Harbour Road and then hit the coast at West Fort, below the laanie suburb of Hout Bay Heights. Heading along the coast behind the Sentinel we come out overlooking Duiker Seal Island. We will regroup here in the hope that we have not already lost the CEO. Whoever the CEO then deems "fit" will be fed to the sharks. After a few photos with the Seals, we then head up the back side of Karbonkelberg making sure we wave at the poachers in thanks for the path they created for us. We then head along the Jeep Track up and around Karbonkelberg with a quick stop by the War ruins to enjoy the views. A little climb further we hit Suther Peak, heading up to the beacon for arguably the best view in the peninsula. From there we fly downhill to the Jeeptrack below and then head out along Rocket Rd and down to the coastal path by the wrecks. We will eventually come out at Sandy Bay and just on the otherside we will be faced with a very important decision. The run will then finish at Ruterplaats just below Suikerbossie. For those that find that too easy, there is then an option to head up Llandudno Ravine and along the Apostles, past the dams and through Nursery Valley to the Bailifs Hut before flying down to Constantia Nek. For the rest of us, it is some pleasant downhill tar back to the start.

Mike will also be leading a shorter route - as usual!

Run leader:

Dopo (Nick) -  083 659 8443

Start:

7:30am

Distance:

20 - 25km (± 35km for the longer run)

Distance:

About 3-4 hours (± 6 hours for the longer run) - depending on the pace of the group you join.

Notes:

Proper thermal base layers, waterproof jacket, cell phone, emergency space blanket etc…as well as enough energy snacks to see you through the whole run.

More important:

Bring ice cold beers for after.

DRIFTERS LONG ROUTE RUN – ALSO SUNDAY 26 JUNE 2016

Long Run - Llandudno Ravine

I'll be doing my own training run on Sunday...

Starting at Suikerbossie and going up Llandudno Ravine and finishing at Constantia Nek.  Doing the HBC route.  I will have dogs with me and be running at my own pace...we will be having fun on the mountain and not taking it too serious.

But you will need the right gear...check below for list.

Venue - Suikerbossie Trail
Start-  +-3pm
Finish - +- 6:30pm

What to bring -

Waterproof Jacket
Hydration Pack (water)
Head Light (not optional!!)
Energy snacks
Phone

I suggest you have pepper spray with you or the like.

I run with it at all times.
Beryl Penny - 0712679752

That’s it until next week.

Cheers
