Hi Everyone

Just a reminder to everyone who might've missed yesterday's email:

SATURDAY 30 APRIL 2016

K-WAY VOB LONGER DISTANCE TRAIL GROUP

The K-Way VOB Longer Distance Trail Group run for tomorrow i.e. the India-Venster route has been cancelled.  Huge apologies for this.  We are temporarily without a run leader.

Please join Table Mountain Trailers instead.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS

This week we will be running will start in Simonstown; one of my favourite routes up to Just Nuisance's grave in Simonstown.

Route

From the parking area on the beach behind the station up through the historic part of Simon's Town and up the stone steps beneath the old cable way gantries to Just Nuisance's grave.  Then follow the road out of the naval area across Red Hill Road towards Kleinplaas dam before looping back to run through the old Scala barracks and gun-batteries to see the WW2 9,2 inch guns and the recently renovated cannons before heading back to the cars.

Rendezvous and Start Time
RV in the parking area at Long Beach behind the railway station to be ready to start running at 07h00

How to get there?
Drive down to Simon'sTown and just beyond the Simon'sTown railway station, look for a road turning left and down to Long Beach between the station fence and Admiralty House garden's stone wall. Drive down and park as convenient.

Terrain and Distance

A warm-up jog through the ancient streets of old Simon's Town redolent of a bygone era, then a good climb up the stone steps to the crest overlooking Simon's Bay. Pause at the actual grave of AB Just Nuisance before a relaxing jog along Red hill's minor roads, undulating trails and tracks before descending down the steep concrete road past Scala barracks and batteries and then back to the station along the footpath next to the main road.   This week will be about    14km taking just under 2hrs for the Fast Group.

Medium Group
The recovery group will follow the same route to start with a more modest pace but will take a slightly shorter route to give a distance of about 11kms

Slow Group
Peter Rogers will be leading a slow group. This will be a slightly short route of about 9km

What to bring
Water, whistle, warm/windproof top depending on weather.

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: 30 APRIL 2016 - LONGER DISTANCE GROUP CANCELLED

Hi All

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LONGER DISTANCE GROUP RUN MUST, ONCE AGAIN, BE CANCELLED.  I AM SO VERY SORRY ABOUT THIS.  OLD WAR WOUND HAS RESURFACED AND MY PLAN B FAILED TOO.

THIS CANCELLATION IS ONLY IN RESPECT OF THE LONGER DISTANCE GROUP.  TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS IS NOT AFFECTED AND UNLESS ANNOUNCED OTHERWISE, THEIR RUN IS ON.

I overdid things running with the big boys and girls at the K-Way VOB road run on Tuesday evening and my knee asked me what the hell I thought I was trying to do.  Getting older sucks.  Jana T and Phillipe I feel particularly bad about this for you two.  In fact as soon as the knee has settled I would be happy to hike India-Venster with you and then you can run from the top while I make my own way down.

LONGER DISTANCE TRAIL RUNNING GROUP

KLOOF NEK / INDIA-VENSTER / MACLEARS BEACON / SMUTS TRACK / AQUEDUCT / DAMS / MARGARET'S CAIRN / CORRIDOR RAVINE / PIPE TRACK / KLOOF NEK - 30 APRIL 2016 - CANCELLED

Cheers

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 30 APRIL 2016

Hi All

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL BE NO CONFIRMATION EMAIL ON FRIDAY - UNLESS THE RUN IS / RUNS ARE CANCELLED.  IF NO OTHER EMAIL, YOU CAN ASSUME THE RUN IS ON.

I will keep this brief (for me):

LONGER DISTANCE TRAIL RUNNING GROUP

KLOOF NEK / INDIA-VENSTER / MACLEARS BEACON / SMUTS TRACK / AQUEDUCT / DAMS / MARGARET'S CAIRN / CORRIDOR RAVINE / PIPE TRACK / KLOOF NEK

We will tackle what we failed to do last weekend because of the storm i.e the India-Venster route:

Start Time and Place

Kloof Nek car park in front of the SANPark Info Centre at 06h45.

Pace Setter and Pace

Tim Bellairs at a Medium Pace.  However, from the car park to the top of India-Venster is a hike-only-pace.  Just setting expectations!

Route

As described in the heading.

Distance

20+ km

Time

4 hours - ish.

Important Notes

  • Winter is pretty much upon us so you are required to dress appropriately according to the weather conditions: proper moisture management clothing / base layers / waterproof jacket / whistle / fully charged cell phone with run leaders number programmed in / warm head covering.
  • Sufficient water and nutrition to see you through the whole run plus more.
  • It is your job to ensure you stay in touch with the run leader at all times.  Stay in a group and stop periodically to re-group if you have run ahead (unless arranged otherwise).  We try to keep regrouping to a minimum but it depends on the speed differences in the group.
  • There is some mild exposure to heights / rock scrambling on the India-Venster ascent.  You need to be comfortable with it.  If you have just a normal fear of heights then you should be fine.

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: WEEKEND WRAP UP - NB!!!! CHANGES

Hi Everyone

NOTICES

K-WAY VOB TRAIL EMAILS NEXT WEEK

Please note that these emails will be a little sketchy next week because I (Tim) will be on leave and I get lazy and pathetic when I’m on leave.  So there will be no Tuesday email, which quite honestly, is the main one that people read.  Sorry about that.  But I will send out the details of where the K-Way VOB trail runs will be next weekend.  Anyone who needs to contact me, please use tim.bellairs@gmail.com or 0823210299.  I will not be receiving any work emails (timbe@nedbankprivatewealth.co.za ) during my leave.

However, the Table Mountain Trailers email group will not be impacted by this at all.

VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE – ROCK GIRL BRAVE.RUN – PLEASE SUPPORT THIS IF YOU CAN (sorry about the late notice but we have only just found out about it) – SATURDAY 23 APRIL 2016

Rock Girl is organising a solidarity (road) run to show support for and unity between women and girls in all communities in all areas.  I really don’t think the reason needs any explanation.  The call is going out to all women, girls, men and boys to join in this run or part thereof to show unity.

Here is what is happening:  the whole route is 30km long from Khayelitsha to Heritage Square in the city centre.  But you can chose to just do a section of the route and transport will be provided to get you back to Heritage Square.  The route will go from Khayelitsha through Mitchells Plain, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Manenberg, Lavender Hill, Rylands, Langa and Woodstock to Heritage Square.  It will go from police station to police station where there will be check points / water stations as well as an opportunity to jump on a vehicle and get a lift back to the city.

Meet at Heritage Square between 06h30 and 07h00 (tomorrow, 23 April) at the Rock Girl benches in Heritage Square in the city centre in order to drop your car and get a lift out to Khayelitsha.

For more information check out www.rockgirlsa.org .

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: GENERAL TRAIL RUNNING INFORMATION

Hi Everyone

TRAIL SHOP AND NOTICES

K-WAY PLATTEKLIP CHAIRTY CHALLENGE – MESSAGE FROM LUC STEENS

"I have entered a charity mountain run race called K-Way Platteklip Charity Challenge. I already did it in 2014.

The idea is very simple : I will join 200 runners to climb Table Mountain in Cape Town as many times we can, starting at sunrise and stopping at sunset.

We will use the classic route up Platteklip Gorge, run across the Mountain, take the cable car down and start again. Each lap is about 5.5km with 600m of vertical ascent.

The charity we are supporting is South African Education and Environment Project http://www.saep.org/

SAEP prepare children and youth at key stage of their development, through education, life skills and psyco-social support.

Also, 10% of the amount sponsored will be given to Wilderness Search and Rescue http://wsar.org.za/ who provide volunteer rescue services for people in danger on the Mountains in the Western Cape province.

In 2014, you sponsored me for more than 45,000 Rands (more than Eur 3000). I ran and climb 9 times Table Mountain.

If you do better, I'll do better and will aim at 10 climbs !

All donation are Tax deductible and you can pay directly the organisation via EFT or credit card.

You can find my profile on the organisation web page and sponsor me per loop for as many loop you want.

http://charitychallenge.co.za/sponsor-a-runner/sponsorship-form/?id=261

If you are in cape Town Saturday 23rd of April, do not hesitate to come to support us in the mountain. Race event will be at the bottom of the Cable car.

Thank you very much to support me running for a good cause.

Luc"

-

SATURDAY 23 APRIL 2015

LONGER DISTANCE GROUP

KLOOF NEK / INDIA-VENSTER / MACLEARS BEACON / AQUEDUCT / DAMS / CORRIDOR RAVINE / PIPE TRACK

Start Time and Place

06h30 from Kloof Nek car park next to the SANParks Info Centre.

Pace Setter

Tim Bellairs  tim.bellairs@gmail.com / 0823210299

Route

From the car park straight up Kloof Corner to the contour path.  Left until the line of the cable station and then right up India-Venster route to the top where we will cheer on the K-Way Platteklip Charity Challenge runners summiting Platteklip Gorge.  Front face path to Maclears Beacon.  Down Smuts track to Aqueduct.  Down Aqueduct to the dams.  Straight across to Margaret's Cairn on the Apostle Spine Path.  At this point those wishing to take a short cut can go straight down Kasteelspoort to the Pipe Track.  Main group will turn left and head over to Corridor Ravine.  Down Corridor and then follow the Pipe Track back to the car park.

Distance

± 20km (?)

Running Time

About 4 hours

Pace (Important)

From the car park to the top of India-Venster this will be a HIKE only.  We will only start running when we get to the top i.e. where the path meets the top of Platteklip Gorge.  Thereafter it will be a gentle medium pace which, for some, will degenerate into a cramp-ridden hobble.

Important Notes

  • Please carry sufficient water and energy snacks for the entire route plus more.  India-Venster is a long, thirsty climb.

  • Please wear proper, weather-appropriate trail running gear including a windproof (waterproof if raining) jacket, fully charged cell phone, whistle, something to keep your head warm etc.

  • Please note that India-Venster is an easy, fun, B-Grade rock scramble in places.  You need to be comfortable with a little exposure.  Nothing too hectic though.  If you have a normal fear of heights you will be fine.  There are steel staples on the trickier sections.

  • Please note that the K-Way Platteklip Charity Challenge is happening in the area.  Parking might be tricky so get there early.

  • We are starting while it is still quite dark so bring a torch.  But we will be hiking only until well after it gets light.

Description: The Merrell Hobbit Journey is a 2 day staged run of the Amathole Hiking Trail.
Just thirty brave journeymen and women share in the adventure covering 90km of varied and magical terrain. From Maden Dam explore the enchanted indigenous forests and intriguing Amathole Mountains up to Cata mountain hut to pass the night with good food, good cheer and tired company. The next morning forge onward past cascading waterfalls and across crystal clear streams while enveloped in glorious vistas, and no small amount of sweat, to finally descend into Hogsback.

Meanwhile, the 38km run on Saturday may be referred to as the short one at this event but this phenomenal route is consistently noted as the 'most value per kilometre' trail run in the country. Showcasing an immense variety of terrain and challenges, the course has determined runners building a very special relationship with the ups and downs of mountain running. The 16km and 5km routes are neither flat nor easy, but very doable and see a mixture of racers and casual runners all loving the magical vibe of the forest along well marked routes. www.mountainrunner.co.za

Where: Western Cape

Distance: 53km
Discipline: Trail Running

Entries Open: 1st November 2016

Entry Fee: R2500

Description: The Merrell Whale of Trail event, in partnership with Cape Nature, is the only opportunity each year for just 175 nature loving athletes to run hard on this iconic trail while treading lightly on the earth and has become a must-do for those who have already tackled the more conventional runs out there.

The 53km route takes runners on a journey from the Potberg nature reserve to Koppie Alleen in CapeNature's flagship De Hoop Nature Reserve. The first half winds through unique fynbos covered mountains with expansive views of the Breede River Valley and mouth and then descends to the enchanting Noetsie Bay, turning west and winding along the rocky shores of the Indian Ocean, with a mix of sandy beach and coasteering trails with the shining white dunes of the finish area teasingly and tantalisingly in sight.

Bang in the middle of whale season, runners are left wondering who is watching who as scores of the annual migratory cetaceans continually breach out the water, spy hopping and waving their fins at the passers-by. www.whaleoftrail.co.za

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 15km – 25km of technical, tough trail at a medium to medium fast pace.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.  For more info contact Peter Rogers (p.d.n.rogers@gmail.com ).

  • K-Way VOB Monday Evening City Bowl Group:  Every second Monday evening from Kloof Nek car park.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  8 – 10kms and most paces can be accommodated.  Nothing too technical.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.   For more info contact Antony Murray on Anthony@proofcc.co.za .

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  All runners welcome.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.  For more info contact Rod Prodgers at rodprodgers@icloud.com or Christo Steyn at trailrunner@sobonana.co.za or Ezan Wilson at ezanwilson@gmail.com .

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers

Tim
