K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: WEEKEND WRAP UP

Good morning Everyone

TRAIL SHOP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PLEASE BE SAFE OUT THERE

We have been notified of several attacks that have happened on and around the mountains recently.  These include attacks and even rapes in the area between Mosterts Mill and the King's Blockhouse.  Horrific!!!!!  Please consider not running here on your own or even in small groups.  Larger groups are encouraged for safety reasons even if SANParks are trying to clamp down on larger groups.

There have also been attacks on the Liesbeek River pathway.  Please treat this area with extreme caution as well.

It is shocking that it has come to this but that is the reality.  Be extremely vigilant when you are running on the mountain or known hotspots and take all possible precautions to ensure your safety.

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: GENERAL TRAIL RUNNING INFO

Hi Everyone

This is traditionally a very long email with tons of information.  So for those of you who are not used to it, here is what you do.  Just skim over it to find events you may be interested in and then use the details provided to therein to take your interest further.  The email is in 4 parts:

  • Trail Shop and Notices;
  • Local trail runs details for this coming week.  All runners welcome at these runs;
  • Events for the year – in date order.  This is a constant work in progress.  Check through it regularly for updates.  Also: please read this section in conjunction with the K-Way VOB Trail Running Facebook Page.  Most of the time the administrator of the page (Jane Holdcroft) is way ahead of me and races appear there that aren't on the email …………… and may never get there because someone doesn't know how to transfer information from Facebook to email.
  • Useful Miscellaneous Information

TRAIL SHOP AND NOTICES

If anyone still needs entries for sale / other items re-advertised them please let Tim know on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .  Otherwise, social media is proving very effective.  Join some of the various trail running Facebook and Twitter groups and advertise there.

FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE FOR VWS – PRIMAL MOTION KING OF CLIMB VERTICAL GAIN CHALLENGE – 1 FEBRUARY 2016 TO 1 MAY 2016

Give this one some thought this weekend.  Check out the attachments.  Great idea from Mark Lang.  50% of proceeds to VWS and 50% towards prizes.

We know how hard the VWS Volunteers have been working this some.  Many of them on this mailing list too.  Every bit helps.

K-WAY VOB MEMBERSHIP

For any runners who, like me, cannot access the club website from work and don't have printers at home, I have attached the membership form for 2016.

Please note that it is not a requirement to be a K-Way VOB Member in order to join in on our trail runs.  All runners are welcome.  But if you are looking for a great club to join, then here is your opportunity.

COMRADES FOR STARFISH FOUNDATION

A message from one of our runners, Barbara Kingsley (BarbaraK@stbb.co.za ):

"I am very happy to say that I have entered Comrades 2016 and have decided this year that I would like to support the Starfish Foundation, who supports, amongst other things,  vulnerable and orphaned children affected by HIV / AIDS

Last year when I ran the Comrades, as I ran past a little boy in one of the rural areas in my HIV + vest, he ran beside me clapping, and excitedly shouting "Run, Hiv Plus, Run".   I don't think that I will ever forget the innocence of the words of that little boy, and that moment really hit home as to how HIV / AIDS should never touch the life of ANY child.  Sadly, however, it affects the lives of far too many children.

I attach my link for my charity page and would greatly appreciate any contribution.

WEDNESDAY 27 JANUARY 2016

CRAG / CSAG / CWAG TRAIL RUN / SHUFFLE / WALK

Date:  Wednesday 27 January 2016

Time: ready to go at 5.45 pm sharp

Leaders: Jayde Butler (run), Sonja Damata (shuffle), Robyn Lawrence (walk)

Location: Pipe Track, western slopes above Camps Bay

Route description: From the start (see below, Starting point and Directions) we head off along the well-known, undulating Pipe Track, with superb views over the Atlantic seaboard and the ocean itself; the route is rough underfoot but perfectly runnable; we continue as far as the very beginning (or end) of the Pipe Track in Slangolie Ravine  before retracing our steps back to Kloof Nek, via the lower jeep tracks, with some challenging uphills for good measure, as your aching quads will tell you. Sunset is at 7.56 pm.

Duration and distance: approx 90 mins, approx 9 km

Shufflers: Sonja Damata will lead a slower, more relaxed run, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Please note that the normal CSAG pace, whilst slower than the runner group, is intended to get the heart rate up and the lungs pumping, and provide a good work-out for those who, for whatever reason, don't run quite as quickly as they once used to. Shufflers are advised to bring/wear the appropriate kit (see below, Equipment).

Walkers: Robyn Lawrence will lead the walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Please note that the normal CWAG pace is quite fast — the walk is not intended to be a gentle stroll in the park; it will get the heart rate up and the lungs pumping, and provide a good work-out for those who, for whatever reason, don't run. Walkers are advised to bring/wear the appropriate kit (see below, Equipment).

Grading

—           100% runnable

—           A1
—           pack run

Starting point:  Kloof Nek parking area (click for Google Maps)

Directions: Get to Kloof Nek via Buitengracht and Kloof Nek Rd (from the city) or Camps Bay Drive or Kloof Rd (from Camps Bay), or simply follow the M62 / cable car / hiking signs up to Kloof Nek. At the circle, turn onto Tafelberg Rd, skip the first entrance – now the MyCiti bus turnaround – and use the second one to park at the highest level (at the SANParks office).

Equipment

—           valid Wild Card / Green Card (go to http://www.wildcard.co.za/get_the_card.htm for details)

Just thirty brave journeymen and women share in the adventure covering 90km of varied and magical terrain. From Maden Dam explore the enchanted indigenous forests and intriguing Amathole Mountains up to Cata mountain hut to pass the night with good food, good cheer and tired company. The next morning forge onward past cascading waterfalls and across crystal clear streams while enveloped in glorious vistas, and no small amount of sweat, to finally descend into Hogsback.

Meanwhile, the 38km run on Saturday may be referred to as the short one at this event but this phenomenal route is consistently noted as the 'most value per kilometre' trail run in the country. Entries Open: 1st November 2016

Description: The Merrell Whale of Trail event, in partnership with Cape Nature, is the only opportunity each year for just 175 nature loving athletes to run hard on this iconic trail while treading lightly on the earth and has become a must-do for those who have already tackled the more conventional runs out there.

The 53km route takes runners on a journey from the Potberg nature reserve to Koppie Alleen in CapeNature's flagship De Hoop Nature Reserve. The first half winds through unique fynbos covered mountains with expansive views of the Breede River Valley and mouth and then descends to the enchanting Noetsie Bay, turning west and winding along the rocky shores of the Indian Ocean, with a mix of sandy beach and coasteering trails with the shining white dunes of the finish area teasingly and tantalisingly in sight.

Bang in the middle of whale season, runners are left wondering who is watching who as scores of the annual migratory cetaceans continually breach out the water, spy hopping and waving their fins at the passers-by. www.whaleoftrail.co.za

The masseurs (euses) are thoroughly trained. And it's rewarding for them, as well as oneself. "

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 15km – 25km of technical, tough trail at a medium to medium fast pace.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.  For more info contact Peter Rogers (p.d.n.rogers@gmail.com ).

  • K-Way VOB Monday Evening City Bowl Group:  Every second Monday evening from Kloof Nek car park.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  8 – 10kms and most paces can be accommodated.  Nothing too technical.  For more information contact Tim Bellairs on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.   For more info contact Antony Murray on Anthony@proofcc.co.za .

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  All runners welcome.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.  For more info contact Rod Prodgers at rodprodgers@icloud.com or Christo Steyn at trailrunner@sobonana.co.za or Ezan Wilson at ezanwilson@gmail.com .

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  All runners welcome.  Not just for club members.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers

Tim
