K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: WEEKEND WRAP UP

Hi Everyone

TRAIL SHOP AND NOTICES

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING FACEBOOK PAGE

For those of you who have been checking out the Facebook page, and it seems like there are plenty of you, we would like to acknowledge those who have been maintaining the page so efficiently.  The updating of race and other information is a time-consuming job and this is done so brilliantly by Jane Holdcroft.  Fantastic to have a project manager in charge of this.  Thank you Jane.  When people post questions on the page, these are typically responded to by Joe Newbert whose sense of humour and dry English irony (let’s be honest, it’s sarcasm) are well known in the K-Way VOB and MATES groups; particularly to his victims.  Thanks Joe.

Alister will be taking the run as I am recovering from the Puffer adventure...so he and the hounds will be your trusty leaders for the evening!   We hope to see lots of friendly faces on that side of the world for a change.

Keen to venture off-road and become a trail runner with OptiFit?

Trail running in South Africa is growing by the day – and it’s no surprise. With its spectacular scenery; the constant change in terrain; the beautiful stillness in the mental freshness offered in the heart of a forest or on a mountain peak - the unsurpassed camaraderie that exists there as well as the fact that it is more forgiving on your body - make it an unbeatable activity in which to participate.

If you are inspired by the prospect of trail running and are able to run 5km continuously on tar– then why not join up with OptiFit and let us help you to develop into a trail runner able to complete an intermediate level trail run of 15km.

OptiFit, which runs in association with the Sports Science Institute of SA (SSISA), has three running programmes – one for novices (12 weeks to your first 10km) – a 10 weeks to 21.1km programme for 10km runners, and then a 10 week trail programme for wannabe trail runners. The first two courses kick off at the beginning of September – but the 10 week trail course is just around the corner – with the first session starting 11 August 2015.

Each course includes three sessions a week where you are trained by caring Sports Scientists/Biokineticists – who are themselves runners.  During these sessions – we will help you master the skills and gain confidence on becoming a trail runner. We also provide you with useful tips about running gear, groups to train with and stunning events on the calendar. We do basic health and fitness assessments at the start and finish of the course and the entire group participates in their official target race –  La Capra Goat trail run in Paarl (15km) on 3 October.

You need to be healthy and uninjured with no major health risk factors to sign up. On joining the programme, you will attend a workshop, receive a starter –pack with a R250 discount on a pair of current Mizuno running shoes and 20% discount on many other sporting brands and select an extra, free assessment. You will also get some guest passes into SSISA’s Wellness and Fitness Centre, where you qualify for preferential rates. There are limited spots available, so sign up now!

For further information and secure a place on the programme, e-mail optifit@ssisa.com or phone/text message Maryse Pretorius on 082 740 3410 and visit www.ssisa.com (upcoming events).  Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to get fit, healthy and achieve a special goal.

The masseurs (euses) are thoroughly trained. And it’s rewarding for them, as well as oneself.

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 15km – 25km of technical, tough trail at a medium to medium fast pace.

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers
