K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: GENERAL TRAIL RUNNING INFO

Hi Everyone

This is a very long email with tons of information.  So for those of you who are not used to it, here is what you do.  Just skim over it to find events you may be interested in and then use the details provided to therein to take your interest further.  The email is in 4 parts:

  • Trail Shop and Announcements;
  • Local trail runs details for this coming week.  All runners welcome at these runs;
  • Events for the year – in date order.  This is a constant work in progress.  Check through it regularly for updates.
  • Useful Miscellaneous Information

TRAIL SHOP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

ASSISTANCE NEEDED AT EVENTS (I know you're trying to ignore this but your conscience will eventually get to you.  You know it will……..Thank you to those who have responded so far.)

There are two large upcoming events where organisers need assistance:

  1. Lipco Law for All Puffer (22 August 2015):  Every year K-Way VOB and MATES combine to host a check point at the gates of the Cape Point Reserve portion of the TMNP.  It is a fairly early morning stint and is over pretty quickly.  We're there for about 1.5 hours.  So you're not required to hang around all day.  Then we pack up quickly and head into the reserve for an awesome trail run.  This year we will cut out the nasty tar section.  We are calling for people, anyone interested – not just K-Way VOB or MATES members, to come along and assist on the morning and then join us for the run.  It is easy stuff.  Our main task is to take down the names of each runner as they come through the check point and to scream and shout.  But we also have a table or two of snacks and drinks for the runners.  It is also the birthday of the K-Way VOB Trail Running Group (Longer Distance Group and Table Mountain Trailers).  If you are keen to help out and / or join us for the run, please let me know on tim.bellairs@gmail.com or 0823210299.  I have attached the guide as to exactly what we do at the table.

  1. UTCT (Ultra Trail - Cape Town) 2015 (3 October 2015):  The race is structured the same way with 9 Aid Stations, each AS having a Captain and between 6-12 volunteers depending on the site. If you or anyone you know would be keen you can contact Stuart McConnachie on stuart@ut-ct.com or below is the link to the volunteer registration form : http://www.ultratrailcapetown.com/#!volunteers/c1u7o . For more info on the event see www.ultratrailcapetown.com.

Keen to venture off-road and become a trail runner with OptiFit?

Trail running in South Africa is growing by the day – and it's no surprise. With its spectacular scenery; the constant change in terrain; the beautiful stillness in the mental freshness offered in the heart of a forest or on a mountain peak - the unsurpassed camaraderie that exists there as well as the fact that it is more forgiving on your body - make it an unbeatable activity in which to participate.

If you are inspired by the prospect of trail running and are able to run 5km continuously on tar– then why not join up with OptiFit and let us help you to develop into a trail runner able to complete an intermediate level trail run of 15km.

OptiFit, which runs in association with the Sports Science Institute of SA (SSISA), has three running programmes – one for novices (12 weeks to your first 10km) – a 10 weeks to 21.1km programme for 10km runners, and then a 10 week trail programme for wannabe trail runners. The first two courses kick off at the beginning of September – but the 10 week trail course is just around the corner – with the first session starting 11 August 2015.

Each course includes three sessions a week where you are trained by caring Sports Scientists/Biokineticists – who are themselves runners.  During these sessions – we will help you master the skills and gain confidence on becoming a trail runner. We also provide you with useful tips about running gear, groups to train with and stunning events on the calendar. We do basic health and fitness assessments at the start and finish of the course and the entire group participates in their official target race –  La Capra Goat trail run in Paarl (15km) on 3 October.

 You need to be healthy and uninjured with no major health risk factors to sign up. On joining the programme, you will attend a workshop, receive a starter –pack with a R250 discount on a pair of current Mizuno running shoes and 20% discount on many other sporting brands and select an extra, free assessment. You will also get some guest passes into SSISA's Wellness and Fitness Centre, where you qualify for preferential rates. There are limited spots available, so sign up now!

For further information and secure a place on the programme, e-mail optifit@ssisa.com or phone/text message Maryse Pretorius on 082 740 3410 and visit www.ssisa.com (upcoming events).  Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity to get fit, healthy and achieve a special goal.

 20ยบ SOUTH RUN with JONATHAN O'HANLON

So here's the story:

  • The cause that we are running for is elephant conservation and water sustainability.
  • The message behind this expedition is that people can follow their dreams.  Darren and I are showing by example that if you have a dream, all you need to do is to make the decision to follow it, and it happens.  Limitations are only perceived, and can be overcome, by anyone and everyone.  This too is the message that The Goodsport Trust is launching as a movement around the country, this event being the launch pad.
  • The focal point of our awareness campaign is Darren's 11 year old son Giles (he lost his mother a few months ago to cancer).  Giles is driving the Connect The Children campaign.  He has been appointed as an Eco-Schools programme ambassador by WESSA.  He will be connecting with school children across the continent as we run (he'll be running 5km every day with us), and with schools in the 59 countries around the world where the Eco-Schools programme is running, as well as others.
  • We will be creating a sustainable tourism route for others to hik and possibly even run sections in the future.  We are engaging with the necessary tourism authorities to create this.

Here's some more details …

 Jon O'Hanlon and Darren Clarke are running across the African continent, starting in the Skeleton Coast region on the west coast of Namibia adjacent to the Namib Desert, travel across 3,500 km of often uncharted terrain, following rivers, elephant migration routes, and cultural and natural heritage sites, to the east coast of Mozambique near the mouth of the Limpopo river.  They will run approximately 45 km every day, with a rest day every seventh day, taking nearly 4 months to finish.

The purpose for their run is to attract people's attention and their awareness to two major issues facing the Earth, and southern Africa in particular.  Firstly, the sustainability of the planet, and in particular water sustainability; South Africa is one of the world's top water scarce regions.  Secondly, the nearing extinction of the sub-Saharan African elephant. This is due primarily to poaching for the ivory trade, with water scarcity as a result of climate change also affecting their survival.

 In South Africa the Eco-Schools programme is implemented by WESSA (the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa), who have appointed young Giles as an Eco-Schools ambassador.  Giles will be recording his observations of the elephant conservation and water sustainability issues in pictures and on video.  He will also be doing a mini SASS (stream assessment scoring system) analysis of every stream, river and body of water that the expedition team crosses on their route across Africa, and uploading the results onto the international mini SASS biomonitoring site.

 Not to be outdone by his Dad, Giles will also be running 5km every day with the athletes.  And in case you thought he wasn't busy enough already, what with all of these activities as well as the home schooling he will be doing every day – the route that the runners will be following will take them through many villages of the local and indigenous peoples of Southern Africa.  Giles will be providing handouts and educational material on environmentalism, correct water usage and sustainability, elephant conservation, and human-elephant conflict issues.

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 15km – 25km of technical, tough trail at a medium to medium fast pace.

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers
