SATURDAY 30 MAY 2015

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNS

LONGER DISTANCE GROUP

JOIN TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS

This is going to be the general situation until I (Tim) am able to run again – hopefully in June / July 2015.  But there will be ad hoc runs when leaders are available so just watch this space.  The reason is that there are so many events on Saturdays now that we are moving into prime trail running season.  It is difficult for leaders to commit.  So rather than hold an iffy run, we will just have longer runs when leaders are definitely available.

HOUT BAY TRAIL CHALLENGE – 25 JULY 2015

We are pleased to finally notify you that the Hout Bay Trail Challenge 2015 entries will be opening on the 27th of May 2015. The last few months have presented a unique challenge for the HBTC event organisers. As a result of the significant impact of the Cape Fires earlier this year, there has been a tremendous amount of work done by a number of parties to ensure that the race would indeed proceed in 2015. For and on behalf of the entire trail running community, I thank all involved for their efforts. The fires had their greatest impact on leg three of the traditional route. As a result, we have made the biggest change to the course in the last 13 years and will be taking runners through completely new terrain. We may not be climbing as high as Vlakenberg but the elevation gain throughout the new leg three will provide just as much, if not more, of a challenge!

With the damage the recent fires have caused, it's time to help rebuild the trails that we so enjoy running on and exploring. We will be donating R100.00 from each entry fee to the path maintenance fund to buy board walk planks to replace those destroyed by the Cape Fires. We hope to raise enough funds to replace the 5,000 planks.

What you need to know:

  • Race Date: Saturday 25th July 2015
  • Start: Hout Bay Harbour (yacht club) – 7:30 am
  • Finish: Silvermist (new finish venue for this year)
  • Cut off: 16:00
  • Distance: +-40km
  • Entry options: Individual / Team of 3 members
  • Route: Unmarked, divided into 3 legs, check out the route details.
  • Total evaluation: +2300m

For more informations have a look at the website.

How best to train?

Tim Ellerbeck of Velocity Sports Lab has provided a training program to help both new and experienced trail runners prepare for the event. Take a look at the first 4 weeks programme.

How to Enter?

All entries will be online and there will be a two-staged entry process. We are limited to 250 runners on the mountain at one time so to avoid any disappointment, be sure to diarise the dates and times below:

  • Wednesday 27 May 2015 at midday (12:00): - First 100 places offered to 2014 finishers; and 10 Bright Start Charity Places (first come first serve basis)

20º SOUTH RUN with JONATHAN O’HANLON

So here’s the story:

  • The cause that we are running for is elephant conservation and water sustainability.
  • The message behind this expedition is that people can follow their dreams.  Darren and I are showing by example that if you have a dream, all you need to do is to make the decision to follow it, and it happens.  Limitations are only perceived, and can be overcome, by anyone and everyone.  This too is the message that The Goodsport Trust is launching as a movement around the country, this event being the launch pad.
  • The focal point of our awareness campaign is Darren’s 11 year old son Giles (he lost his mother a few months ago to cancer).  Giles is driving the Connect The Children campaign.  He has been appointed as an Eco-Schools programme ambassador by WESSA.  He will be connecting with school children across the continent as we run (he’ll be running 5km every day with us), and with schools in the 59 countries around the world where the Eco-Schools programme is running, as well as others.
  • We will be creating a sustainable tourism route for others to hik and possibly even run sections in the future.  We are engaging with the necessary tourism authorities to create this.

Here’s some more details …

Jon O’Hanlon and Darren Clarke are running across the African continent, starting in the Skeleton Coast region on the west coast of Namibia adjacent to the Namib Desert, travel across 3,500 km of often uncharted terrain, following rivers, elephant migration routes, and cultural and natural heritage sites, to the east coast of Mozambique near the mouth of the Limpopo river.  They will run approximately 45 km every day, with a rest day every seventh day, taking nearly 4 months to finish.

The purpose for their run is to attract people’s attention and their awareness to two major issues facing the Earth, and southern Africa in particular.  Firstly, the sustainability of the planet, and in particular water sustainability; South Africa is one of the world’s top water scarce regions.  Secondly, the nearing extinction of the sub-Saharan African elephant. This is due primarily to poaching for the ivory trade, with water scarcity as a result of climate change also affecting their survival.

In South Africa the Eco-Schools programme is implemented by WESSA (the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa), who have appointed young Giles as an Eco-Schools ambassador.  Giles will be recording his observations of the elephant conservation and water sustainability issues in pictures and on video.  He will also be doing a mini SASS (stream assessment scoring system) analysis of every stream, river and body of water that the expedition team crosses on their route across Africa, and uploading the results onto the international mini SASS biomonitoring site.

Not to be outdone by his Dad, Giles will also be running 5km every day with the athletes.  And in case you thought he wasn’t busy enough already, what with all of these activities as well as the home schooling he will be doing every day – the route that the runners will be following will take them through many villages of the local and indigenous peoples of Southern Africa.  Giles will be providing handouts and educational material on environmentalism, correct water usage and sustainability, elephant conservation, and human-elephant conflict issues.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks a ton Tim

Cheers

Jon

The masseurs (euses) are thoroughly trained. And it’s rewarding for them, as well as oneself.

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 15km – 25km of technical, tough trail at a medium to medium fast pace.

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers
