K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNS

LONGER DISTANCE GROUP (FASTER GROUP)

Whilst the K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group is not formally offering a run this coming weekend, Andrew Beetge (Andrew Beetge’s cell number:  083 232 6908)  has offered to take those who are keen, on a real adventure run on Saturday morning (28 March 2015):

NEWLANDS FOREST / ELS BUTTRESS (just to the left /west of Newlands Ravine) / KNIFE EDGE (yes there is another one other than the one on Devil’s Peak) / LEDGES (C Grade Scramble) / MACLEARS / ECHO VALLEY / AQUADUCT / DAMS / SKELETON GORGE / CONTOUR BACK TO NEWLANDS

Here is Andrew’s description:

“I was thinking about doing a Ledges via Els Buttress trip then, so if you think it would be of interest to your runners, I could well turn it into something quite runnable. From Newlands Forest straight up to the contour and halfway up Newlands Ravine, where we break off onto Els Buttress. A scramble up to Knife Edge and then Ledges. Once at the top we run to Maclear's, across the front face and down into Echo Valley, where we follow that sneaky path I showed you down into the aqueduct area. Down to Hely Hutchinson Dam and around, descending Skellies back down to the cars at Newlands.

Something like that. Obviously Ledges is not for everyone, but I imagine the MATES crowd have done it before. More likely Els Buttress will be the unknown entity to most, but it's much tamer than Ledges ………….

So yeah, just putting it out there. No idea on distance, but the height gain is significant, so probably 4+ hours.

Obviously there will have to be regroups up to the top of Ledges at least, unless anyone else is 100% certain of the route. Bail out points can be at the top of Els Buttress, where it's no more than 5 minutes to the top of Newlands Ravine should anyone want to turn around.”

So probably an 06h30 start.

BUT:  please RSVP to me (Tim) on tim.bellairs@gmail.com .  There are two main reasons: 1. Obviously one doesn’t want too large a group on a route like this, and 2. Some people may need some guidance as to whether this would be an appropriate run for them.  I am happy to advise.  I know a lot of the regulars and I have a reasonable understanding of this route even though I haven’t done Els Buttress before.  Gary B and Bryony, no, this one is not for you.

Generally, you will need to have a good head for heights, be comfortable with exposure and enjoy rock scrambling.  It is not just a run but a bit of a climb / scramble for the first half as well.  No ropes necessary though.  I definitely don’t want to discourage people as Andrew is very safety conscious and this is a rare opportunity to experience something pretty unique on the mountain with someone who knows his stuff.

Pace:  this is probably one for the faster runners.  Anyone faster than Mike Ohlsson, so that still leaves quite a lot of scope.

Andrew Beetge’s cell number:  083 232 6908.

Warning:  Trail running is inherently more dangerous than road running.  It takes place over uneven hazard strewn trails in exposed and often remote terrain where help is not always readily available.

Participation is voluntary and entirely at your own risk as although the organizers take reasonable precautions to ensure runner safety, it cannot be guaranteed.  To this end neither the Club nor the organisers personally can be held liable for any claims relating to inter alia, injuries, disabilities and death. Further any minor child participating in any trail running activity will be deemed to be doing so with the consent of his or her guardian.

By starting out on a trail run you explicitly acknowledge that: 1] you understand the associated risks involved and accept full responsibility for your own safety. 2] you are medically and physically fit to participate and 3] are carrying the necessary water, clothing and safety equipment required for the particular run.

Kloofnek-PipeTrack-Kasteelspoort & Corridor Ravine

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV at 0645 in the lower parking area off Tafelberg Road on your left immediately after you have turned into Tafelberg Rd. from the Kloofnek circle.

Terrain and Distance

Starting from the parking area an easy warmup jog along the pipe track to the foot of Kasteelspoort.  Then a good climb up Kasteels to the 12 Apostles trail and a run along to the head of Corridor ravine and the descent down to the end of the pipe track at the foot of Slangolie Ravine. From there an undulating jog along the pipe track back to start.   Mostly single mountain trail with potentially excellent views over the Atlantic seaboard.   Distance about 11.5Kms

Recovery and Run/Walk groups.

Both these groups will be going out at their respective more modest paces!

All runners welcome.

Bring headlamp for the last section of the run.

WEDNESDAY 25 MARCH 2015

CRAG / CSAG / CWAG TRAIL RUN / SHUFFLE / WALK

Date:  Wednesday 25 March 2015

Time:  ready to go at 5.45 pm sharp

Leaders:  Gavin Goldblatt (run), Andre Proctor (shuffle), Ezan Wilson (walk)

Location:  Cecilia Forest / Kirstenbosch from Constantia Nek

Route description:   From the start we cross Constantia Main Road, very carefully, and make our way down the road to the Alphen Hotel, where we take the very popular Alphen Trail section of the green belt, heading along a level path for approximately 2 km, neatly avoiding dogs, strollers and babes in/with prams. We then cross Brommersvlei Rd and continue steadily climbing, now on the Diep River Trail, to Southern Cross Drive. Then up Southern Cross a short way, cross Rhodes Drive and up into Cecilia Forest, where we enjoy a very steep climb up to the popular "waterfall" drinking hole. Next, some easy level running brings us to the SANParks staff quarters, where we turn down to the main Cecilia Forest parking area; another short stretch of the dreaded t*r brings us to Spilhaus Ave, and now we rush into the quick, downhill Klaasenbosch Trail, across Hohenhort Ave, and pick up the Alphen Trail again for a flat, fast finish. Sunset is at 6.53 pm — time for headlamps.

Duration and distance:  approx 90 mins, approx 9 km

Shufflers:  Andre Proctor will lead a slower, more relaxed run, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Shufflers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Walkers:  Ezan Wilson will lead the walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Grading
—   100% runnable

—   A1
—   pack run

Starting point:  Constantia Sports Centre / Virgin Active / VOB (click for Google Maps)

Directions:   On the M3 heading south (out of the city) take the M41 Constantia/Hout Bay Main Road exit, which goes through a full 180° hairpin and comes to a stop sign at the M41; turn left towards Constantia and pass under the M3, cross over the traffic lights, then turn left at the next lights into the Constantia Sports Centre/Virgin Active/VOB running club grounds, turn immediately left just inside the entrance, and park on the grass near the cricket field; coming from the south (Muizenberg side) on the M3, take the same exit, turn left into the M41 at the traffic light, and left at the next one, as above.

Equipment

—         torches/headlamps becoming necessary now, especially for the last 30 mins or so

—         valid Wild Card/Green Card (go to http://www.wildcard.co.za/get_the_card.htm for details)

—         water/energy drink/munchies
—         weather-appropriate clothing/gear: long-range weather forecast for 6 pm says clear skies, no rain, 22 °C, wind SE 14 kph

—         personal medication (if required)
—         something for rehydration after the run
—         warmer/dry clothing for the rehydrate session
—         whatever else you personally need for a comfortable, fun-filled trail run

THURSDAY 26 MARCH 2015

CELTICS THURSDAY SUMMER TRAIL RUNS

This Thursday 26 March, the run will start at 18h00 sharp at Constantia Nek.

We start the run in the parking area immediately adjacent to the traffic circle at the Nek, and opposite the restaurant.

The route goes out through Upper Cecelia Forest, links up for a short section along the contour path, descends into Kirstenbosch and then comes back along the lower route through Cecelia Forest and back to the Nek.

Difficulty grading: 6/10 (mainly gentle inclines and declines; only very mildly technical for a short section, otherwise not technical at all for the rest)

 Distance: 9kms

It’s starting to get dark near the end of the run for some of our groups so it’s time to start bringing headlamps along.  Check that it is still working from last winter and that your batteries have been replaced if necessary.

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER.

If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. Thanks

SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPISTS

Please note that these are massage therapists who have been recommended by trail runners who run in our groups:

Southern Suburbs:                                           -

·         Nicole Walder.  To book an appointment or find out more info you can contact Nicole on 0826997863 (leave a message or WhatsApp if necessary - she will get back to you asap).  Nicole is personally known to the K-Way VOB and MATES groups and is highly recommended.

·         Amy from Rub Therapyhttp://www.holisticpages.co.za/amy-sasman .  Practice is based in Punts estate , Diep River:  “I have been working for myself for the last 5 months but I have almost 5 years experience in the field , with a coaching science background as well. I have worked with a couple of running clubs before as well as soccer and hockey teams , doing pre/post event injury management etc.  My practice is called rub therapy -  rehabilitate| your | body Email : rub.bookings@gmail.com Contact : 082 347 1284 .”

·         Sandy Smith who is based in Kirstenhof.  Her tel. no. is 073-435-3647 and her email address is sandrabrink@hotmail.com.

·         While not specializing in sports massage, I have found the Light and Healing Centre (http://www.lightandhealing.co.za/) to give excellent full-body massages at a very low rate.  I’ve had very good ‘tough’ massages, with mention of emphasizing legs, from both male and female (blind) masseurs there.  I recommend it to anyone. The masseurs (euses) are thoroughly trained. And it’s rewarding for them, as well as oneself.

  • Anneline Viljoen is a physiotherapist in the Strand who also specialises in lynotherapy. Highly recommended by Johan and Azanne van Wyk.  She has a keen interest in sport, and sees runners and cyclists on a daily basis. She has done sport massages at stage events such as the Cape Epic, and she is highly recommended for the treatment of injuries, recovery programs, sport massages, or simply to resolve running niggles. Her contact number is 021 854 8652 or you can find her on Facebook.

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 20 – 25km of technical, tough, trail at a medium to medium fast pace.

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers

Tim
