By starting out on a trail run you explicitly acknowledge that: 1] you understand the associated risks involved and accept full responsibility for your own safety. 2] you are medically and physically fit to participate and 3] are carrying the necessary water, clothing and safety equipment required for the particular run.

Hi Everyone

This is a very long email.  So for those of you who are not used to it, here is what you do.  Just skim over it to find events you may be interested and then use the details provided to take your interest further.  The email is in 3 parts:

  • Trail Shop and Announcements;
  • Trail runs details for this coming week;
  • Events for the year – in date order.  This is a work in progress and there is still lots to add (e.g. still have to put in Richard Sutton stuff and Eugene Nel’s Quantum Events stuff).  This is where skimming is important.

Grading
—   100% runnable

—   A1
—   pack run

Starting point: Chelmsford Road, Devil’s Peak (click for Google Maps)

Directions:   Three options, detailed below (if they sound too complicated, just enter the address or Google Maps ref into your smartphone or similar navigational device — you ALL have one — and follow its directions). We meet at the end of Chelmsford Rd. Immediately past the Pinoak Rd turn-off, turn left onto the dirt track. If you arrive later, you may have to park on Chelmsford Rd itself — please don’t park on red or yellow lines.

—    From the N1/Table Bay Boulevard: Take the M60 Oswald Pirow St (City East) off-ramp and follow Oswald Pirow past the Good Hope Centre and CPUT (formerly Cape Technikon). At the T-junction with Roeland St, turn left. Carry on past the Central Fire Station, under the overpass, and turn immediately right (across the M3/De Waal Dr) into Crassula Ave. Follow the white line steadily up, as Crassula becomes Ixia, Gardenia and Noordelik. At the stop sign turn left into Derry, which becomes Oak Tree. Turn left into Chelmsford.
—    From the N2: Keep left on Hospital Bend going up the hill and follow M3/De Waal Drive as it winds its way around Devil’s Peak. When you reach the residential area, after a sweeping right and left s-bend, slow down and take the FIRST sharp left turn into Barnham Rd, which becomes Noordelik; heading generally up, cross a 4-way stop and a 3-way stop. At the next stop sign turn left, up, into Derry, which becomes Oak Tree. Turn left into Chelmsford.
—    From the city centre: Work your way up to and turn left into Orange/Annandale/Mill/Jutland (same road — it just depends on which section of it you reach). Drive past the Gardens Centre and where the double carriageway narrows to single, turn right into Clive, left into Aandblom, right into Chelsea, left into Upper Mill, which becomes Derry. Follow Derry, which eventually becomes Oak Tree. Turn left into Chelmsford.

Equipment

—        valid Wild Card/Green Card (go to http://www.wildcard.co.za/get_the_card.htm for details)

—        water/energy drink/munchies
—        weather-appropriate clothing/gear: long-range weather forecast for 6 pm says clear skies, no rain, 23 °C, wind SE 30 kph

—        personal medication (if required)
—        something for rehydration after the run
—        warmer/dry clothing for the rehydrate session
—        whatever else you personally need for a comfortable, fun-filled trail run

WORKSHOPS

SSISA

Become a 10km, 21km runner with OptiFit or venture into trail running

Have you longed to be a runner but have convinced yourself that you could never succeed? Think again! Our human physiology and indomitable spirits show that with training – most of us can run. The trick is to progress gradually - allowing your body to adapt to the process.

OptiFit, which runs in association with the Sports Science Institute of SA (SSISA), will be managing three running programmes early in 2015; 12 weeks to your first 10km novice programme

– the  8 weeks to 21.1km programme for 10km runners  and then the 10 week trail programme for aspiring trail runners who can manage 5km on tar but wanting to complete an intermediate level trail run (10 – 12km).  Recent research, conducted by UCT’s Exercise Science and Sports Medicine Unit on OptiFit’s 10km programme, found it to be extremely safe and scientific with members reaching their goal with no muscle damage or pain.

Each course includes three sessions a week where you are trained by caring sports scientists/biokineticists – who are themselves runners.  During these sessions – we will help you master the skills and gain confidence on becoming a road or trail runner. We also provide you with useful tips about running gear, groups to train with and stunning events on the calendar. We do basic health and fitness assessments at the start and end of the course and the entire group participate in their official target race – the UCT 10km Memorial run, the Old Mutual Two Oceans 21.1km or the Jonkershoek 10km trail run. All courses start early to mid- February 2015.

You need to be healthy and uninjured with no major health risk factors to sign up. On joining the programme, you will attend a workshop, receive a starter –pack, get discounts on gear; select an extra, free assessment and get some guest passes to train at the SSISA’s Wellness and Fitness Centre, where you also get preferential rates. There are limited spots available, so sign up now!

For further information and secure a place on the programme, e-mail optifit@ssisa.com or phone/text message Maryse Pretorius  on 082 740 3410 and visit www.ssisa.com (upcoming events).  Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to get fit, healthy and achieve a special goal.

·         While not specializing in sports massage, I have found the Light and Healing Centre (http://www.lightandhealing.co.za/) to give excellent full-body massages at a very low rate.  I’ve had very good ‘tough’ massages, with mention of emphasizing legs, from both male and female (blind) masseurs there.  I recommend it to anyone. The masseurs (euses) are thoroughly trained. And it’s rewarding for them, as well as oneself. Larry Jenkins

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 20 – 25km of technical, tough, trail at a medium to medium fast pace.

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers

Tim
