K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: WEEKEND WRAP UP

Hi Everyone

TRAIL SHOP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEW MORNING SOCIAL TRAIL GROUP in NEWLANDS FOREST – NIKKI PALLINI

We are looking for ladies/men/dogs to join us for a run at Newlands Forest on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:30am.

We are getting going again after a break so the pace is slow with some walking.

Please contact Nikki at nikki.pallini@gmail.com

REMINDER!!!!!!  K-WAY VOB MONDAY EVENING CITY BOWL TRAIL RUN – 2 FEBRUARY – ALL RUNNERS WELCOME

Remember that there is slightly new format.  This is a free (no charge) run and all trail runners and potential trail runners are welcome:

  • Runs will now start at either Kloof Nek car park or other venues on the mountain from now on, as opposed to meeting at Cape Union Mart Gardens.  This eliminates the car admin aspect.
  • We will be holding the runs every two weeks now instead of once a month.
  • There will be K-Way (Cape Union Mart) give-aways very kindly sponsored by our club naming sponsor, K-Way.  The way it will work initially is that every second month (after 4 completed runs) we will draw 6 x R150 K-Way vouchers.  Whenever you attend a run you will be required to sign in on a register (this is also a safety procedure).  Each time you sign in, your name gets entered for the draw.  So if you attend all four runs your name goes into the hat four times.  If one of your entries wins a prize then that entry only is withdrawn and your other entries remain in the hat. If your name gets drawn and you are not there to collect we will hold the voucher for you.  You don’t need to be in attendance to collect it at the time of the draw.

On 2 February 2015 the run will start at 18h00 at Kloof Nek car park in front of the SANParks kiosk and we will do either Pipe Track or Katrine’s Route (Kloof Corner / Contour Path / Saddle / Deer Park.  Please try and get there by about 17h45 for filling in the register.  Freda Walters (and possibly Dave and Jeff) will be there to lead.  DON”T FORGET TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU WRITE YOUR NAME DOWN ON FREDA’S REGISTER.

Here is a wrap up off this weekend’s runs.

At the top of the mountain we will decide if we want to come back via Rooikat Ravine or continue to Hely Hutchinson, and then loop back via Nursery Valley to the top of Nursery Ravine. Once safely back on the contour path we will  loop around Kirstenbosch Dam, and then decide whether we want to face the Aloes again or rather take the sensible route back via Lubberts Gift.

K-WAY VOB COMBINED TRAIL INFORMATION

Hi Everyone

This email has become extremely long.  So for those of you who are not used to it, here is what you do.  Just skim over it to find events you may be interested and then use the details provided to take your interest further.  The email is in 3 parts:

  • Announcements;
  • Trail runs details for this coming week;
  • Events for the year – in date order.  This is a work in progress and there is still lots to add (e.g. still have to put in Trevor Ball’s stuff and Richard Sutton / Claire Ashworth’s stuff inter alia).  This is where skimming is important.

TRAIL SHOP AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

For those who have sent me their names asking for entries (and there are a lot of you) please note that we have not yet had one single offer.

We are appealing for entries for the Two Oceans Half Marathon and Trail Races for a list of Trail Runners who will be dabbling in some tar or missed the cut off for trail race entries.  If you know you won’t be using your entry and are keen to sell it at cost then please let me know on tim.bellairs@gmail.com / 0823210299.

The Bat Run organised by MATES:     MATES are looking for helpers for The Bat Run on 28 February 2015 (yes, new date …….. no longer 7 March).  Note that this is a Night Race starting at about 19h00 from Kloof Nek car park and basically goes through the night until the wee

hours on Sunday morning.  Assistants work in shifts.  If you are prepared to help out please contact Cher Vossberg on cherilynvossberg@gmail.com .

The Peninsula MarathonCeltic Harriers will be hosting its premier event, the Cape Peninsula Marathon.

In order for this event to share the success of previous years the club needs Marshall's for various positions on the route.

Road running events are made possible by the contributions of runners throughout the community and by agreeing to Marshall you have played a part in making these events possible.

Please note that all Marshall's will receive a free entry in the helpers run which will be held on the 8th of February for both the Half and Full marathons.

PUFFER 2015 ENTRY PROCESS

I have included below the latest information from the PUFfeR team for 2015.  For K-Way VOB members who intend applying separately for one of the two novice nominations, you still have to follow all of the PUFfeR process completely (including running a qualifying ultra within the given time period).  It is a different exercise to the K-Way VOB nominations.  So please apply for an invitation to participate on 2 March 2015.  This is extremely important.  Andy will not entertain a nomination of someone who didn’t receive an invitation.

Just a reminder that K-Way VOB is allowed to nominate 2 novices (subject to all PUFfer entry conditions) to run PUFfeR and they will be accepted if they followed all PUfeR procedures to entering and qualifying.  Club members apply for the nominations through Tim Bellairs who forwards them to the  K-Way VOB Main Committee who then make the final decision based on various factors such as length of club membership, involvement in the club and trail running in particular etc.

“PUFfeR 2015 - 22 August 2014

Entry Process

  • 02 March 2015 - Applications for invitation to participate opens at 07:00
  • 10 March 2015 - Invitations to participate sent to successful applicants
  • 17 March 2015 - Closing date for successful applicants to complete entry process.
  • 22 August 2015 - PUFfeR

Please remember that if you want to run in 2015 you will need to run an Ultra Marathon between 01 Dec 2014 and 12 July 2015.

I will send out a reminder and costs closer to the time.

Andy”

THURSDAY 29 JANUARY 2015

CELTICS THURSDAY SUMMER TRAIL RUNS

On Thursday 29th January we meet at Newlands Forest for the Contour Path run to start at 18h00. Meet in the parking area at the Newlands forest Parks Board office / helipad / firebase (the parking area is the main parking area off the M3 – 700 metres north of the big M3 / Blue Route intersection with Rhodes Drive / Newlands Avenue, and about 1.2kms south of the southern end of UCT).

We head up and left into Newlands Forest, initially following uphill jeep tracks for the first 2 km’s, before we reach a rusted sign pointing to “Contour Path”. We head up this attractive path which includes some steps and which will lead us up to the contour path. We then turn right heading along the contour path all the way to the turnstile below the blockhouse. As we reach the turnstile, we turn sharp right and head down a single track path, which after about 800 metres links up with the jeep track. This heads steadily down into Newlands Forest again, and back to the start.

 Some characteristics of this run:

-          The first 2.5 km’s are mainly steady uphill, with some steps, but all on great quality running surface.

-          Once we reach the contour path, there are some technical rocky and stony sections along the contour path, particularly over the first km of this section. But most of it thereafter is 3-4kms of easy level running all the way to the turnstile below the blockhouse.

-          Some sections of the run take place on boardwalks which can be slippery when wet.  Please take care on this section!

-          When we turn down from the turnstile, the initial 800 metre downhill section is uneven and technical – ankle-roll territory – so watch your footing here and walk if you need to.

-          The rest is easy flowing; smooth running downhill to the finish.

Difficulty grading: 7.5/10

Distance is ±8 km’s.

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. Thanks

WORKSHOPS

SSISA

Become a 10km, 21km runner with OptiFit or venture into trail running

Have you longed to be a runner but have convinced yourself that you could never succeed? Think again! Our human physiology and indomitable spirits show that with training – most of us can run. The trick is to progress gradually - allowing your body to adapt to the process.

OptiFit, which runs in association with the Sports Science Institute of SA (SSISA), will be managing three running programmes early in 2015; 12 weeks to your first 10km novice programme

– the  8 weeks to 21.1km programme for 10km runners  and then the 10 week trail programme for aspiring trail runners who can manage 5km on tar but wanting to complete an intermediate level trail run (10 – 12km).  Recent research, conducted by UCT’s Exercise Science and Sports Medicine Unit on OptiFit’s 10km programme, found it to be extremely safe and scientific with members reaching their goal with no muscle damage or pain.

Each course includes three sessions a week where you are trained by caring sports scientists/biokineticists – who are themselves runners.  During these sessions – we will help you master the skills and gain confidence on becoming a road or trail runner. We also provide you with useful tips about running gear, groups to train with and stunning events on the calendar. We do basic health and fitness assessments at the start and end of the course and the entire group participate in their official target race – the UCT 10km Memorial run, the Old Mutual Two Oceans 21.1km or the Jonkershoek 10km trail run. All courses start early to mid- February 2015.

You need to be healthy and uninjured with no major health risk factors to sign up. On joining the programme, you will attend a workshop, receive a starter –pack, get discounts on gear; select an extra, free assessment and get some guest passes to train at the SSISA’s Wellness and Fitness Centre, where you also get preferential rates. There are limited spots available, so sign up now!

For further information and secure a place on the programme, e-mail optifit@ssisa.com or phone/text message Maryse Pretorius  on 082 740 3410 and visit www.ssisa.com (upcoming events).  Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to get fit, healthy and achieve a special goal.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPISTS – RAASAY WATERS ADDED THIS WEEK (CLAREMONT)

Please note that these are massage therapists who have been recommended by trail runners who run in our groups:

·         Nicole Walder.  To book an appointment or find out more info you can contact Nicole on 0826997863 (leave a message or WhatsApp if necessary - she will get back to you asap).  Nicole is personally known to the K-Way VOB and MATES groups and is highly recommended.

·         Sandy Smith who is based in Kirstenhof.  Her tel. no. is 073-435-3647 and her email address is sandrabrink@hotmail.com.

·         While not specializing in sports massage, I have found the Light and Healing Centre (http://www.lightandhealing.co.za/) to give excellent full-body massages at a very low rate.  I’ve had very good ‘tough’ massages, with mention of emphasizing legs, from both male and female (blind) masseurs there.  I recommend it to anyone. The masseurs (euses) are thoroughly trained. And it’s rewarding for them, as well as oneself. Larry Jenkins

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Which groups for which runners?

·         K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 20 – 25km of technical, tough, trail at a medium to medium fast pace.

·         K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.

·         MATES:  Sunday mornings, Tuesday Evening Time Trials and some night runs.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.

·         CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.

·         Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers

Tim
