SUMMARY FOR THIS WEEK
TUESDAY 29 APRIL 2014
MATES TUESDAY TRAIL TIME TRIAL
Definitely on for this evening. Please note the times below. The earlier email today made it sound like it was this morning but it is in fact this evening. Thank you Mr McPherson for drawing this to my attention.
See you all there.
Starting times 17h30 or 17h45 starts only. Bring your headlamps in case.
WEDNESDAY 30 APRIL 2014
CRAG TRAIL RUN (including CSAG and CWAG)
Date: Wednesday 30 April 2014
Time: ready to go at 5.45 pm sharp
Leaders: Douglas Rossouw (run), Christo Steyn (shuffle), Guy Meredith (walk)
Route description: From the parking area, we head downhill on the single track into the bundu for about 100 metres, and then turn right up the meanest flight of stairs that you are ever likely to see. Fortunately, they only last for a couple of minutes before we pop out at the upper parking area. From here we head leftish, onto a track that zigzags through a real hidden gem of a natural forest. We follow the path upwards, ignoring all the trails leading off the elbows of the zigzags, and primarily follow the stepped path until we emerge from the forest and start climbing the last bit. This will be sort of the left-hand flank of the Vlakkenberg that you may be familiar with. From here on, there is some lovely single-track running. We continue until we hit a crossroads, where we turn left and head for our first beacon. We might pause a section and check out the views, before heading off on some more single track towards the more familiar Vlakkenberg track of PUFfeR and HBTC fame. A quick pause to catch our breaths and grin at each other in shared elation, before we head back past the first beacon to the crossroads, where we will continue straight on to the second beacon. More grinning and breathing while we enjoy the panoramic view of the Constantia area. Then a U-turn and back the way we came down the mountain. GREAT CARE must be taken on the way down — there are a couple of hidden stumps and stakes and things that are going to trip SOMEONE up and it better not be you! Remember that nasty staircase we came up right at the start? This one will have your orthodontist's bank manager smiling big time if you race down there with carefree abandon. Sunset is at 6.06 pm.
Duration and distance: approx 100 mins, approx 6 km
Shufflers: Christo Steyn will lead a slower, more relaxed run, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Shufflers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).
Walkers: Guy Meredith will lead the walkers on a brisk walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).
Starting point: Price Drive, Constantia (click for Google Maps)
Directions: Get onto the M41 Constantia Main Road, the road that links Constantia Nek with Pick n Pay/Constantia Village, the M3, and Wynberg Main Road. If you're coming from Constantia/Southern Suburbs/M3, pass Groot Constantia on your left and turn left into Price Drive. Continue for a couple of hundred metres and turn left at a T-junction. Continue up the hill for another couple of hundred metres until you get to the Table Mountain National Park parking area, which is not at the top of Price Drive. You'll know what I mean when you get there. There is plenty of parking, just please do not park in somebody's driveway or in any other anti-social manner. If you're coming down the hill from Constantia Nek, you'll have to turn right into Price Drive, then follow directions as above.
— headlamp or torch now essential; sunset at 6.06 pm
— clothing/gear: long-range weather forecast predicts partly cloudy skies, no rain, 13–19 °C, wind S 16 kph
— something for rehydration after the run
— warmer/dry clothing for the rehydrate session
— whatever else you personally need for a comfortable, fun trail run

SUNDAY 4 MAY 2014
MATES FIGURE OF EIGHT TRAIL RUNS - 4 MAY 2014
MATES will be organising two ordinary club runs with a slight, special difference: runners (regardless of your club – ALL RUNNERS WELCOME) who complete the entire run will be able to use the run as a qualifier for the purposes of entering PUFfer 2014.
The runs are called the Figure of Eight runs, purely so that they can be distinguished from all of the other MATES club runs. As they are ordinary club runs there is no charge for participating.
Sunday 4 May 2014 and
Sunday 1 June 2014.
Runners to gather at 05h30 at Constantia Nek car park for a briefing before you start.
The route will consist of two different loops, each starting and finishing at Constantia Nek car park. Please see the link below to Strava for the route, courtesy of Spencer Williams.
Runners will be welcome to do parts of the route only, if they so choose, but only those who complete the whole route will be accepted as a PUFfer 2014 qualifier. Your efforts will be recorded by MATES and communicated to the PUFfer Committee.
45km (25km and 20km) on both of the above dates, NOT 25km on one and 20km on the other. Both runs cover 45km each.
· You will need to be totally self-supported for the run. But you will be able to leave refreshments, change of clothes etc in your vehicle at Constantia Nek and so replenish your supplies more or less at the half-way point in the run. No support table or back up is provided by MATES, as with a normal club run.
· You will be expected to meet with all of the usual trail equipment, gear and safety requirements for long trail runs. If you don't then you may be told not to run. These are winter runs and so proper winter trail gear must be used. If in any doubt then contact the CEO (of trail running) – details below.
· If you are planning on doing one of these runs and using it as a PUFfer 2014 qualifier then please contact the CEO beforehand so that he know who to keeps tabs on. If you don't tell him and you are not recorded then PUFfer won't accept it.
· No smses No emails Only phone calls.

JONKERSHOEK MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE 2014 - 4 MAY 2014
WINGS FOR LIFE WORLD RUN – 4 MAY 2014
Franschhoek, Cape Town on the 4th of May 2014.
It is called the Wings For Life World Run. It is a global running event taking place in 35 countries across 6 continents. South Africa has been lucky enough to have been chosen as one of the countries. The event is a charity event with 100% of the proceeds going towards spinal cord injury research. Entry fee for South Africa is R250-00.
The catch phrase is "Running for those who can't"
There is one global start time ( 12:00pm for South Africa ). Runners will run a loop course in Franschoek with a catcher vehicle starting 30min after the start gun. If the vehicle catches up to you your run is over. There will eventually be one runner left globally. That's the concept in a nutshell.
For more info please see the website below. The one and only aim is to "Run for those who can't".

USEFUL TRAIL RUNNING EVENTS LINKS
Very useful links for just about all trail events and news:
A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics / Orca Satori )
There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:
Ø The 5 groups referred to here are by no means the only clubs organisations that offer trail runs but these groups above are open to all runners, not just club members. There may well be other clubs that do this but we are not aware of them. If you are looking for a club to join though then we would love to have you as a member. But It is not compulsory.
Ø For these 5 groups, there are no fees payable for attending the runs. They are free. The only costs you have to pay is where we have to pay entry fees to a reserve. These are for your account.
Ø There is no insurance involved. You run entirely at your own risk.
Ø You don't need to RSVP unless specifically requested. You just rock up and run. You may be required to fill in an attendance register at the run though.
Ø You are expected to know the general rules of trail running and which kit to wear and carry for the different weather conditions. If you don't know then you must ask.
Which groups for which runners?
Ø K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group: Saturday mornings. This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 20 – 25km of technical, tough, trail at a medium to medium fast pace. See blog link below.
Ø K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers: Saturday mornings. There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure. See blog link below.
Ø MATES: Sunday mornings and some night runs. Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Faster Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners. Helps to be a beer drinker.
Ø CRAG / CSAG / CWAG: Wednesday evenings. A pack run that caters for most trail runners. Not what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join. Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you. The running group has recently been split in two. CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group. CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.
Ø Celtics: Thursday evenings. 4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast. If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time. A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.
Ø Orca: Friday night Pub-Pub shorter trail runs specifically designed for beginner trail runners.
Ø Satori: Sunday mornings fortnightly(ish). A mixture between CRAG and CSAG pace. All levels of trail runner accommodated and welcome, although you will need to be able to run 10km with ease.
Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join. This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.
