K-Way VOB TRAIL RUNNING: THE WEEK 24 FEBRUARY - 2 MARCH 2014 EMAILS

Hi again Everyone

Limited E-Mails Next Week

It slipped my mind when sending my email earlier that I will be off on study leave (for the last time EVER!!!!) for the whole of next week.  Whilst I will send out an email about what we are going to run next Saturday.  I will not be sending out the Tuesday Other Great Trail Runs and Upcoming Events email on Tuesday or the Weekend Wrap on Friday.  Sorry about that.  This won’t happen often.

MATES MTTTT Record Broken

Mike Ohlsson also reminded me that I didn’t let everyone know that the Ladies Time Trial Record was broken this last Tuesday at the MATES Tuesday Trail Time Trial by none other than MATES’s very own Rebecca Lazarus.  Here is Mike’s report in his very own personal style that no-one else could possibly duplicate:

“So my feeling was right about someone breaking the MTTTT record.
The new ladies record is 74min 41 sec. Rebecca from MATES well done.
Oh and to let you know one of the top trail runners in VOB Gary Banfield came in 12 min later.
He really got chicked.

Cheers.
CEO(of trail running)
Mike 0823197250”

K-Way VOB TRAIL RUNNING: WEEKEND WRAP UP

Hi Everyone

A late addition to the weekend activities:

SATURDAY 22 FEBRUARY 2014 JANE HOLDCROFT TRAIL RUN

In addition to all of the other activities below, Jane Holdcroft is going to be doing a run from the Lower Cable Station on Tafelberg Road starting at 05h30 tomorrow (Saturday).

The route will be along the contour path and up to The Saddle.  Middle contour around Oppelskop and around and down to lower contour again.  Then contour path back to the cars.

Specifics:

·         Start 05h30 from the Lower Cable Station on Tafelberg Road.

·         This is a run, not a hike.  Welcome back Jane.

·         Jane needs to be back at the cars by 08h45 so if the pace is too slow then the run may be cut short.  Unlikely to be a problem on this route.

·         Headlamps will be required for the first 20 mins or so.

·         Jane will be running with the dogs so you need to be comfortable with running with dogs.

·         For further details contact Jane.

·         NB!  Please RSVP to Jane on 0790852582 / janeholdcroft@hotmail.co.uk if you intend running.

K-Way VOB TRAIL RUNNING: OTHER GREAT TRAIL RUNS AND UPCOMING TRAIL EVENTS

Hi Everyone

Another bumper edition today. (do people still say “bumper”?)

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

TRAIL HOUNDS (RUNNING / RIDING WITH DOGS)

For those of you who would like to try out something a bit different this winter, Trail Hounds might be just the thing! Trail Hounds - running and riding with dogs, is a series of events that will run through the winter months, starting this May. The locations are all in the Western Cape and are nicely varied, each one is very exciting and challenging. At each event there will be both a short course (2.5km) and a longer course (6-8km). There will be separate times for either biking or running with your best friend. Equipment that can make these activities a bit easier such as running harnesses for dogs will be on sale, for more information check out www.trailhounds.net. This at present will take you to our Facebook page, but our shiny new website is on the way. We will keep you posted, and when the website is up you can book yourself and your dogs onto one of our very exciting events!

WEDNESDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2014

CRAG TRAIL RUN (including CSAG and CWAG)

Date:  Wednesday 19 February 2014

Time:  ready to go at 5.45 pm sharp

Leaders:  Dirk McIntosh (run), Andre Proctor (shuffle), Guy Meredith (walk)

Location:  Muizenberg Peak and St James Peak from Boyes Drive

Route description:  From the parking area on Boyes Drive above Lakeside (about 1,8 km from Main Road, just past Rooikrantz and the Quarry) we head up the long, steep, rocky path, passing lower Steenberg Peak on our right. Once we’ve topped out, finished cursing the leader, and had an opportunity to massage our aching calf muscles, we follow the path in an easterly direction, arriving shortly at the top of Muizenberg Peak to admire the breathtaking views and the sprawling sights of the “Deep South”. Now we follow the path in a southerly direction, cross over the top of Farmer Peck’s Valley and continue on to St James Peak. After the regroup we take the left fork in the path and eventually link up with the gravel road and follow this upwards to meet the single track again to the top of the valley we slogged up earlier, and descend that same steep rocky path, to arrive back at the start with quivering jelly quads. Sunset is at 7.34 pm.

Duration and distance:  approx 100 mins, approx 9 km

Shufflers:  Andre Proctor will lead a slower, more relaxed run, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Shufflers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Walkers:  Guy Meredith will lead the walkers on a brisk walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Starting point:  Boyes Drive (Muizenberg Peak) (click for Google Maps)

Directions:  Take the M3 south to the very last exit, turn left into Steenberg Rd, then at the traffic lights right into M4 Main Rd towards Muizenberg; 500 m later, opposite the Westlake Wetland Conservancy, turn right on to Boyes Drive; follow the Drive for about 1,8 km from where you turned off Main Rd to an obvious parking area on the right. There is ample parking on both sides of the road.

Equipment
—        valid Wild Card/Green Card (go to http://www.wildcard.co.za/get_the_card.htm for details)

—        water/energy drink/munchies
—        clothing/gear: long-range weather forecast predicts partly cloudy skies, slight chance of light rain, 18–24 °C, wind SW 17 kph
—        personal medication (if required)
—        something for rehydration after the run
—        warmer/dry clothing for the rehydrate session
—        whatever else you personally need for a comfortable, fun trail run

WINGS FOR LIFE WORLD RUN – 4 MAY 2014

Franschoek, Cape Town on the 4th of May 2014.

It is called the Wings For Life World Run.  It is a global running event taking place in 35 countries across 6 continents.  South Africa has been lucky enough to have been chosen as one of the countries.  The event is a charity event with 100% of the proceeds going towards spinal cord injury research.  Entry fee for South Africa is R250-00.

The catch phrase is "Running for those who can't"

There is one global start time ( 12:00pm for South Africa ).  Runners will run a loop course in Franschoek with a catcher vehicle starting 30min after the start gun.  If the vehicle catches up to you your run is over.  There will eventually be one runner left globally.  That’s the concept in a nutshell.

For more info please see the website below.  The one and only aim is to "Run for those who can't".

The complete escape offered by several days of trail running in multi-stage events - is making it one of the fastest growing activities in South Africa. And it’s no surprise why this is the case! Slaves to technology and life’s demands - what better - than to be plucked out of this madness and exposed to quietness, spectacular scenery and a great work-out for body and soul? The constant change in terrain, the mentally refreshing stillness in the heart of a forest or on a mountain peak and the amazing camaraderie at these events - make trail-running an unbeatable activity.

But if you are not well trained or adequately prepared for three to five consecutive days of trail running; you don’t know what gear you need; how to care for your body and ensure your nutrition is optimal – then the wheels could come off. This could destroy the magic of what could be a beautiful experience! For this reason – the Sports Science Institute of SA (SSISA) have partnered with PeptoSport, Runner’s World, New Balance and BUFFÒ  to bring you “Golden rules of Multi-stage trail running”.

South Africa’s very own trail running legend, Landie Greyling, who finished in the top 10 of the World Long-Distance (77km) Trail Running Championships in North Wales and is the current women’s course record holder of the Skyrun, will be our main speaker. She will provide us with plenty of motivation, training advice and highly practical “pearls of wisdom”. Other experts include dietitian, senior researcher and trail-runner Dr Julia Goedecke who will focus on nutrition before and during the event. Well known event organizer and experienced mountaineer and trail runner, Owen Middleton (wildrunner.co.za), is our “gear guy” and he will give you the low-down on exactly what to consider when preparing your kit for  a 3-5 day trail-run as well as survive the worst that weather and other uncontrollable conditions can throw at you.

The workshop will take place at the SSISA in Boundary Rd, Newlands on Monday 3 March at 17h30 for 18h00 sharp and will offer trail runners of all abilities - plenty of food for thought.

The evening will conclude with a lucky draw with fantastic PeptoSport, Runner’s World, New Balance and BUFFÒ hampers and SSISA gym memberships up for grabs. Sign up quickly – spaces are limited and this workshop is NOT to be missed. The entrance fee is just R65 and includes light snacks and some notes. And of course you get to mingle with fellow trail runners who are one-of-a-kind! Registration kicks off at 17h30, and a cash bar will be available.

E-mail workshop@ssisa.com without delay - put it in your diary and we look forward to seeing you there!  Flyer available – either from ssisa or email me (Tim Bellairs) and I will forward it to you.

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (K-Way VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics / Orca Satori )

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Ø  The 5 groups referred to here are by no means the only clubs organisations that offer trail runs but these groups above are open to all runners, not just club members.  There may well be other clubs that do this but we are not aware of them.  If you are looking for a club to join though then we would love to have you as a member.  But It is not compulsory.

Ø  For these 5 groups, there are no fees payable for attending the runs.  They are free.  The only costs you have to pay is where we have to pay entry fees to a reserve.  These are for your account.

Ø  There is no insurance involved.  You run entirely at your own risk.

Ø  You don’t need to RSVP unless specifically requested.  You just rock up and run.  You may be required to fill in an attendance register at the run though.

Ø  You are expected to know the general rules of trail running and which kit to wear and carry for the different weather conditions.  If you don’t know then you must ask.

Which groups for which runners?

Ø  K-Way VOB Longer Distance Group:  Saturday mornings.  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 20 – 25km of technical, tough, trail at a medium to medium fast pace.  See blog link below.

Ø  K-Way VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  Saturday mornings.  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Distance Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer Distance Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.  See blog link below.

Ø  MATES:  Sunday mornings and some night runs.  Similar to K-Way VOB Longer Faster Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker.

Ø  CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  Wednesday evenings.  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.

Ø  Celtics:  Thursday evenings.  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Ø  Orca:  Friday night Pub-Pub shorter trail runs specifically designed for beginner trail runners.

Ø  Satori: Sunday mornings fortnightly(ish).  A mixture between CRAG and CSAG pace.  All levels of trail runner accommodated and welcome, although you will need to be able to run 10km with ease.

Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.   This email just tries to draw all of the info together for convenience.

Cheers
