K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: GENERAL TRAIL RUNNING INFO FOR THE WEEK

Hi Everyone

I hope you are all enjoying a very merry festive season and are all suitably disgusted with yourselves because of the amount you have gorged down over the last few days.  Sies!!!!

Well here are a couple of suggestions for putting things right:

TUESDAY 30 DECEMBER 2014

MATES MTTTT (TUESDAY TRAIL TIME TRIAL)

Starts 18h00 from the car park at Constantia Nek car park.  Slower runners are welcome to start earlier but then you will need to time yourself and record your time with Mike afterwards.

It's the classic route up Constantia Corner to Camel Rock and then on to the concrete road at the De Villiers Dam.  Left and then first right down Cecilia Ridge to the contour path via Cecilia Waterfall and "the landing and zig-zig path".  Then back to the car park on the jeep track.

Mike reckons as this is the last MTTTT for the year you might as well stick around for a couple of beers aftwerwards.

SATURDAY 3 JANUARY 2015

NO K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNS

SUNDAY 4 JANUARY 2015

MATES SUNDAY TRAIL RUN

Start 07h00 from the car park just inside Silvermine Gate 2 (South East gate or aka the R5.00 Gate).  Bring R5.00 entrance fee plus a tip for the car guard.

Mike will lead a circuit around Silvermine South-East for 3 - 3.5 hours.

Bring the normal trail running kit, water and snacks as well as ICE cold beers for after.

Remember there is no cell phone reception at the start so don't be late.

For any more info call Mike on 0823197250.  No SMS es and no emails please.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The Monday evening K-Way VOB City Bowl Trail Runs will commence again on Monday 19 January 2015 and will occur every two weeks from now on, rather than the once monthly runs before.  There will be Cape Union Mart giveaways once a month at these runs etc but more details will follow in due course.  But start putting these in your diaries.

Have a wonderful News Year's everyone.  Be safe.  See you soon.

Cheers

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: THE COMING WEEK

Hi Everyone

TUESDAY 16 DECEMBER 2014

MATES MTTTT (MORNING RUN THIS TIME)

With a slight difference because it is a public holiday.

07h00 (yes, 7am) from the car park at Constantia Nek.

It is the classic time trial route up Constantia Corner / Camel Rock / De Villiers Dam / Cecilia Ridge / Cecilia Waterfall / "the Landing" / Jeep Track.

No drinking afterwards.  Go and spend time with your families!  What's wrong with you people?

For further info contact Mike Ohlsson on 0823197250.  Phone calls only.  No SMSes and no emails.

THURSDAY 18 DECEMBER 2014

MATES NEWLANDS FOREST RUN (BECAUSE NO CELTICS RUN)

18h00 from the car park in Newlands Forest on the M3.  Same place as the VWS Office and the Helipad.

Plumpudding Hill Route.

SATURDAY 20 DECEMBER 2014

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNS

LONGER DISTANCE GROUP

Start 06h30 from the car park at Constantia Nek.

Run Leader

Chris Whales

Route

Down the tar road towards Hout Bay and right into Longkloof Road.  Backroads onto the mountain and straight up Myburghs Waterfall Ravine.  Apostle Spine Path over Grootkop to the old railway track path / Margaret's Cairn / Dams / Skeleton Gorge (or Nursery Ravine - I can't remember - it's the morphine).  Down to contour path and back to Constania Nek.

About 20kms in at least 4 hours+ (I think......morphine).

Usual cautions apply about having the right gear, carrying sufficient water and snacks etc.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS (K-WAY VOB MEDIUM DISTANCE TRAIL GROUP)

I speak subject to correction but the Trailers are on a break until the new year now.

SUNDAY 21 DECEMBER 2014

MATES SUNDAY TRAIL RUN

Run Leader

Barry Washkansky / Mike Ohlsson

Start 06h30 at the car park outside Ruyteplaats residential estate at the top of Suikerbossie Hill i.e. just below the Suikerbossie Restaurant.

Start up Hout Bay Corner and then Eureka Traverse to and up Llandudno Ravine.  Apostle Spine Path over Grootkop.  Yellowwood Traverse / Atlantic Traverse and then back along the Apostle Spine Path.  Down Llandudno Buttress this time and back to the cars.

15 - 20km but allow 3.5 to 4 hours because the Yelloowwood Traverse is more of a hiking section.  Spectacular though.

That's it for now.

Just remember: anyone trying to contact me (Tim) by email please use my Gmail address because I will be out of office until 12 January 2014.

Cheers

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: WEEKEND WRAP UP

Hi Everyone

Sorry about the erratic nature of the emails this week.  Well, more erratic than normal.  And I wish I could say it will improve but in all likelihood it won’t.  I will be out of office for at least a week and a half from Monday as I go off to have my foot fixed up in readiness for the next stage in my trail running life.  J  So don’t expect any emails from me next week.  Then I will be on leave from 22 December 2014 until 12 January 2015 and emailing from my gmail address only.  My gmail artistry is far less reliable than from my work address (laptop vs desktop).

So here is some stuff to keep you going in the meantime.

·         Saturday 13 December 2014:     No K-way VOB Longer Distance Trail Run as MATES will be having their Christmas / Chairman’s Run from Constantia Nek + AGM.  All runners welcome though.  See details below.

·         Saturday 20 December 2014:     K-Way VOB Longer Distance Trail Run – Chris Whales will be leading a run from Constantia Nek from 06h30.  Full details will be announced by later email but to whet your appetite it will be more or less tar road to Longkloof Road and then up Myburgh’s Waterfall Ravine / Apostle Spine Path to Old Railway / Dams / Skeleton Gorge / Contour Path back to Constantia Nek.

·         To those who have asked about Two Oceans Half Marathon entries, please note that I haven’t forgotten but I will only kick off the advertising process in the new year.  Keep training in the meantime.

·         You may have noticed that there is no trail braai this year.  We just have to postpone it as I will be too immobile to organise and host it this December.  More details to follow.

SUNDAY 7 DECEMBER 2014

MATES SUNDAY TRAIL RUN

DEER PARK / SADDLE / DEVILS PEAK / SADDLE / NEWLANDS RAVINE / CONTOUR PATH / SKELETON GORGE / DAMS / AQUEDUCT / SMUTS TRACK / MACLEARS BEACON / FRONT FACE SPRINT / PLATTEKLIP / DEER PARK

Run Leader

Dead Man Nick (Long)  0836598443

Michael Ohlsson (Short Slower)  0823197250

Start Time and Place

We will start from Deer Park at the top of Deer Park Drive at 6:30am.

Routes

There will be two routes, the longer one which I will be heading up is a mild 22 kays (about 2 kays of ascent), but is not to be underestimated.

From Deer Park, up to Deadman's Tree (how appropriate?!), left along Tafelberg Road, up the Saddle, beware to not take the Newlands Ravine split just yet as a startled elite did this year at the 3 Peaks Challenge Cape Town as he was being chased by King Martin Kleynhans. Head all the way straight up to the top of Devils Peak, touch the beacon and take a Peak a Selfie if you must. Head back down then at the split now head to Newlands Ravine and enjoy the flying zigzag down to the Newlands Forest contour path boardwalks.

This is where the shorter route splits off and heads left along the contour to the Blockhouse and then continues to contour until reaching the Platteklip intersection where it heads back down to the road and then returns to Deadman's Tree before winding the long and comforting Jeep Track way down back to Deer Park.

The long route however has barely just started, heading right on the contour instead of the left which the shorter one took. All the way along, up and over the Aloes, and eventually arriving at the bottom of another "once departed" trail section, Skeleton Gorge. Heading up Skeleton Gorge, then across onto the beach by the dams and around eventually joining onto the intersection by the Museum. We head up towards the Aqueducts however frivolously trying to avoid taking a break to stare at the beautiful valley and chance of Disas and then eventually after enjoying the mountains gift of water but dripping onto the Aqueduct, the trail joins up with Smuts Track and heads up to Maclears Beacon for our second peak of the day.

This however is where the fun really starts with a sprint finish along the front face of Table Mountain to the top of Platteklip and then clambering down to the road, heading right back towards My Tree and then down the Jeep Track all the way back to Deer Park.

This however is where the next challenge of the day starts where the CEO of Trail Running Michael Ohlsson will be waiting with cases of ICE COLD BEER, CIDERS and RED COOLDRINK. I also insist everyone have a picnic basket or whatever other snacks you desire waiting as the day has just begun and we will be running (in the festive sense) Deer Park for much of the afternoon or at least until the CEO passes out.

The route can be found at http://www.strava.com/segments/8526457. My previous pathetic time of 5 hours is nothing to go by, no more than 4 hours this time!

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNNING: WEEKEND WRAP UP

Hi Everyone

FRIDAY 28 NOVEMBER 2014

MERRELL HOBBIT TRAIL RUNS – 28 / 29 NOVEMBER 2014

For full details see www.mountainrunner.co.za

SATURDAY 29 NOVEMBER 2014

K-WAY VOB TRAIL RUNS

LONGER DISTANCE GROUP

SILVERMINE NORTH-WEST STARTING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WAGON TRAIL

Run Leader

Gavin Goldblatt.

083 628-6396

Start Time and Place

Meet at the corner of Silvermine Rd and Ou Kaapse Weg at 6:00.

Route

We will run up the Old Wagon Trail until we can dogleg left to follow a single track through a Mimetes forest to the lookout over San Michelle. Then a steep slog back and up to the top of Noordehoek Peak, the high point of the run, where we will admire the view and rest our shaky legs before a fast run along the Dragonback path down to the saddle and back up the other side to Elephants Eye Cave where we will regroup, rehydrate and regain our composure. We will then head down the shortcut to Silvermine Dam where those who wish can cool off, followed by a fast downhill along the Mountain Bike Path curving right around the flank of the mountain to where we will eventually turn off back onto the Old Wagon Trail and the last downhill gallop to our cars. Probably 21km, plus minus, and probably around 1km of total altitude gain and it should take us about 3 hours. All runnable except perhaps 300m of Noordehoek Peak with views of both oceans, pristine fynbos single track and a nice mix of technical and fast runnable. We will do it fairly slowly with plenty of regroups, and if anyone is struggling they can cut out about 3km by waiting behind at the intersect of the Elephants Eye loop - as long as they tell me when doing that. As I will be leading from behind this should be easy enough:-)

Distance

About 21km

Running Time

About 3 hours.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS (K-WAY VOB MEDIUM DISTANCE TRAIL GROUP)

CAPE POINT – OLIFANTSBOS ROUTE

Circular route starting from Olifantsbos parking area along the shipwreck trail then turning inland to Sirkelvlei and back along the Mimites ridge.

The gates to Cape Point open at 0600 and it is about a 20 minute drive to Oifantsbos from there.

Terrain and Distance

Flat beach run then single track bush trails with only minor hills.  Distance approximately 11kms.

WEATHER FORECAST

I am having some cut and paste issues today so no pretty pictures.  Could be my internet connection; could be the hangover.  But Tokai / Silvermine comes up as partly cloudy on Saturday morning.  A light south-south-easter (but carry a windproof top).  But it should be warm.  18º at 06h00 and 21º by 09h00.  No rain forecast.

A LITTLE WEEKEND HUMOUR PICKED UP BY RANDOLPH MORT

http://ultrarunnerjoe.com/2014/09/21/how-to-tell-a-trail-runner-from-a-hipster/

A little bit of humor here.  Many of you may have noticed the striking similarities between trail runners and modern-day hipsters.  Here is a quick guide to help you differentiate between the two:

1.      A trail runner’s trucker hat has sweat stains on it.

2.      Due to the athletic, muscular build of their legs, a trail runner cannot fit into skinny jeans.

3.      A trail runner showers in the creek or with baby wipes; a hipster showers at the YMCA or not at all.

4.      A trail runner drinks whatever beer is available at the finish line, but will wax poetic about craft beers on non-race days.  A hipster will wax poetic about craft beers, but will drink PBR at any given time.

5.      Trail runners use hydration packs or race giveaway bags; hipsters use messenger bags.

6.      A hipster wears actual Ray Bans.  A trail runner wears fakes that cost $2.99 at a gas station (or were a freebie from a race).

7.      A trail runner will have more visible foot blisters/calluses while walking around in his/her Birkenstock sandals.

8.      A trail runner has a well-groomed beard; a hipster has a…who am I kidding, their beards are equally out of control.

9.      Hipsters ride bikes.  You will only catch a trail runner on a bike if they’re cross training or their feet are too swollen from their last 100 to fit into shoes.

10.  Hipsters only eat free range organically grown food. Trail runners eat whatever you put within reaching distance.

11.  Hipsters wear tacky sweaters to make a statement.  Trail runners wear tacky sweaters because they forgot how cold it is on the top of a mountain and that’s all they could find in the abandoned shed.”

Whatever you’re up to, have a great weekend Everyone.

Cheers

Tim
