acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: OTHER GREAT TRAIL RUNS AND UPCOMING TRAIL EVENTS

Hi Everyone

TRAIL SHOP + INFO

  • Apologies to Liz RobertsonIn my list of acsis VOB members who completed the LIPCO Law For All PuFfer on Saturday I omitted Liz Robertson in error.  Sorry about that Liz.  She had a great run and finished in a time 12h01.  Well done Liz.

  • A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (acsis VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics / Orca)

This note, which we published last week, is repeated at the end of this email and is intended as a general guideline to runners unfamiliar with the groups in Cape Town as to which groups are most appropriate to which runners.  It is not intended to be definitive.  It's just a guideline.  PS It has also been amended to include the new CSAG (Slower Running Group) component for CRAG.

·         IN THE NEW RACES ADDED BELOW, the CEO of Trail Running has asked me to specially draw your attention to the BCA / MATES TRAIL CHALLENGE on 28 September 2013.  See details below.  We must also add, that in support of our fellow trail runners at MATES, we will be making this the official Acsis VOB Trail Run for the Longer Faster Group Run for that weekend.  We will not be offering an alternative run on 28 September.  This does not apply to the Table Mountain Trailers though.

HOW TO TREAT THE INFORMATION BELOW:

As usual, tons of trail info below with even more new events added.  New stuff added each week too.  Please note that we try and keep the events in chronological order so new events tend to be added further down the email.  Skim through it, take what you need and bin the rest.

WEDNESDAY 28 AUGUST 2013

CRAG TRAIL RUN (now including CSAG and CWAG)

Date:  Wednesday 28 August 2013

Time:  ready to start running at 17h45 sharp

Leaders:  Tom Scriba (CRAG), Laurence van Blerck (CSAG), John Yeld (CWAG)

Location:  Cecilia Forest

Route description:  From the Cecilia parking area we head up the gravel road and turn left at the first intersection, running upwards through the forest until we meet the lower contour jeep track.  At the intersection close to the little waterfall/bench, we head straight up the delightful single track through the forest until we meet up with the upper jeep track, which is the Contour Path. We follow the Contour Path to the right, stopping for a short breather at Angela's plaque, before we head downhill, past Big Gumtree Corner, to enjoy the gentle incline and a few stairs up to the upper corner of Kirstenbosch, at the bottom of the Rooikat Ravine trail. Here we have a short chat and then take a left up Rooikat Ravine, past Cecilia Waterfall. About 300m beyond the waterfall, we turn right, and up, to regroup at the lookout point below the Bridle Path. We then enjoy the wonderful roller coaster trail through the forest, all the way down until we hit the Contour Path again, and negotiate our way back to the parking area for a welcome refreshment. Sunset is at 18h26 (getting later day by day now, but you still need a headlamp or torch).

Duration and distance:  approx 90 mins, approx 9 km

Shufflers: Laurence van Blerck will lead a slower relaxed run, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Shufflers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Walkers:  John Yeld will lead the walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Starting point: Cecilia Forest parking area (click for Google Maps)

Directions: From the M3, follow the signs to Kirstenbosch, but continue past the main entrance towards Constantia Nek, and past Top (Rycroft) Gate; about 1 km further the Cecilia parking area will be on the right. From Constantia Nek, head along the twisty Rhodes Drive towards Kirstenbosch, and after about 3 km the Cecilia parking area will be on the left.

THURSDAY 29 AUGUST 2013

CELTICS THURSDAY WINTER TRAIL RUNS

Headlamps: COMPULSORY; please make sure they are in working order.

On Thursday 29th August we meet at Kloof Nek for the run to start at 17h45. We will do the Deer Park Route.

The route starts from the Kloof Nek parking area (where the Sanparks info centre is.) Meet in the parking area on the left just 100 metres up Tafelberg Road from the traffic circle on Kloof Nek.

It heads in the direction of Devil's Peak taking in the humps and hills of Deer Park. It then climbs steadily to Dead Man's Tree on Tafelberg Road and heads back along Tafelberg Road past the base of Platteklip and Lower Cableway back down to the start.

Distance: +/- 9km.

Great for 'night' running and if it is a clear night, the views from Tafelberg road of Table Mountain on the one side and the city on the other as you run back to your cars will be fantastic!

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. Thanks

FOOTNOTE

A quick, rough guide to the Regular Weekly Trail groups in the first section of this email (acsis VOB / MATES / CRAG / Celtics / Orca)

There seem to be lots of new faces arriving at the weekly runs and from feedback received it seems it would be useful to clarify some basics and also advise which groups are suitable for which runners:

Ø  The 5 groups referred to here are by no means the only clubs organisations that offer trail runs but these groups above are open to all runners, not just club members.  There may well be other clubs that do this but we are not aware of them.  If you are looking for a club to join though then we would love to have you as a member.  It is not compulsory though.

Ø  For these 5 groups, there are no fees payable for attending the runs.  They are free.  The only costs you have to pay is where we have to pay entry fees to a reserve.  These are for your account.

Ø  There is no insurance involved.  You run entirely at your own risk.

Ø  You don't need to RSVP unless specifically requested.  You just rock up and run.  You may be required to fill in an attendance register at the run though.

Ø  You are expected to know the general rules of trail running and which kit to wear and carry for the different weather conditions.  If you don't know then you must ask.

Which groups for which runners?

Ø  acsis VOB Longer Faster Group:  This group is for more experienced, fit trail runners who can do 20 – 25km of technical, tough, trail at a medium to medium fast pace.  See blog link below.

Ø  acsis VOB Table Mountain Trailers:  There are three pace groups – 1. Main Group is a similar pace to the Longer Faster Group but for 10 – 15km and with more regroups than the Longer, Faster Group which makes it do-able for some of the slower runners. 2. Recovery Group is a gentler pace for 7 – 10km suitable for recovering athletes and novice trail runners. 3. A walking group – not a stroll, but a brisk walk which has been known to bring walkers to near heart failure.  See blog link below.

Ø  MATES:  Similar to acsis VOB Longer Faster Group and often a little (or a lot) more hard core (extreme terrain) but definitely do-able for most experienced trail runners.  Helps to be a beer drinker. J

Ø  CRAG / CSAG / CWAG:  A pack run that caters for most trail runners.  Not  what I would call a beginner runner group as you need to be able to do 10 -15km of technical trail with confidence but once you have some base fitness then this is one of the first groups you need to join.  Lots of experienced trail runners to advise you.  The running group has recently been split in two.  CRAG is the Faster Group and CSAG (Shufflers) is a slower running group.  CWAG is the walking group for a brisk walk on the mountains.

Ø  Celtics:  4 – 5 Pace groups which cater for just about all speeds from slow to super-fast.  If in any doubt, start with the slowest group and work your way up over time.  A great place to kick off your trail running although you do need some base fitness (must be able to run 10km) even for the slowest group.

Ø  Orca:  Friday night Pub-Pub shorter trail runs specifically designed for beginner trail runners.

Ø  Each club / group has its own emailing list which you can join.  But this email attempts to bring all of the info together.

Have a great week Everyone.

Cheers

Tim
