WEDNESDAY 31 JULY 2013

CRAG TRAIL RUN – THE DIAGONAL ROUTE

Date:  Wednesday 31 July 2013

Time:  ready to start running at 17h45 sharp

Leader:  Barry Washkansky

Location:  Twelve Apostles, western slopes above Camps Bay

Route description:  Starting from Theresa Ave, Rontree Estate in Camps Bay, we head steeply up to the Pipe Track, that venerable and popular promenade along the lower reaches of the Twelve Apostles, originally constructed in 1887 to allow access to workers (and materials) building the water pipeline from Slangolie Ravine to Kloof Nek. A left turn along the Pipe Track allows a bit of stretching of the legs for some distance towards Kloof Nek, as far as the start of the Diagonal route. Now it’s a long slog and scramble up the steep path around Porcupine Buttress, up the rock-stepped watercourse in Porcupine Ravine, and continuing around Jubilee Buttress before the final ascent to reach the Apostles Path in the Valley of the Red Gods. A short run along the top brings us to our descent via the dependable but sometimes slippery Kasteelspoort (Castle Gateway) to the Pipe Track, and we retrace our route to the starting point. Sunset is at 17h58 (getting later day by day now, but you still need a headlamp or torch).

Duration and distance:  approx 120 mins, approx 8 km

Walkers:  John Damata will lead the walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Starting point: Theresa Avenue, Rontree Estate (click for Google Maps)

Directions: From Kloof Nek take Camps Bay Drive down into Camps Bay. Turn at the THIRD left into Fiskaal and follow this road as it snakes up the mountainside. Fiskaal becomes Francolin and eventually Theresa. About 500 m from the start of Theresa you'll find our starting point at the end of a little side road on the left. Parking in the side road is limited, so please find yourself a spot somewhere along Theresa Ave. Please park only on the sea side of the road, taking care not to obstruct anybody's driveway or a curve (solid line). This run takes a bit longer than our usual Wednesday outing so it is important that we start on time — don't be late.

Equipment

·         headlamp or torch essential

·         valid Wild Card/Green Card (go to http://www.wildcard.co.za/get_the_card.htm for details)

·         water/energy drink/munchies

·         clothing/gear: long-range weather forecast predicts clear skies, no rain, 14–18 °C, wind ESE 5 kph, so come dressed appropriately

·         personal medication (if required)

·         something for rehydration after the run

·         warmer/dryer clothing for the rehydrate session

·         whatever else you personally need for a comfortable, fun trail run

NAMIB DESERT CHALLENGE – 28 OCTOBER TO 1 NOVEMBER 2013

“Due to popular demand we are hosting another edition of the race this year. The 6th edition of the Namib Desert Challenge will take place from the 28th October - 1st November 2013. Registration is now open - enter before the 5th May and save 5% off your entry fee.

The NDC is a 220km, multi-day trail race, which will test both your physical and mental limits. Competitors originate from all four corners of the globe and will test themselves against the elements. Extreme heat, rugged terrain, rocky-mountains, the famous Sesriem Canyon, culminates in the summiting of two of the highest dunes in the world, namely Dune 45 and "Big Daddy".

The Route:

There are five stages ranging from 32 - 56 kilometers over five days. The stages are arranged to cover the most spectacular and varied part of the area. Each stage consists of several legs whereby competitors must pass through a checkpoint to collect water and where medical assistance is also available. Checkpoints are stationed roughly every 15km throughout each stage.

 Stage 1: 44 Kilometers

Area: Private Game Farms around Sesriem

The race begins with a slight and gradual incline across dry bushveld. The terrain is a mix of grassy plains, rocky hills and dry river beds. Competitors will be treated to awesome views of the landscape upon reaching the summit of a narrow mountain pass. Wildlife is regularly visible and competitors will be treated to sightings of springbok, oryx, zebras and ostrich.

 Stage 2: 44 Kilometers

Area: Naukluft National Park

The course traverses dry riverbeds and then heads through scattered vegetation and then into a dry big open gravel plain. Hereafter, competitors will get a taste of running over their first dunes and the trail becomes thick red dune sand.

 Stage 3: 44 Kilometers

Area: Private Game Farms around Sesriem

Day 3 offers a tougher test of the competitors' navigation skills. The scenery is magnificent and wildlife is plentiful. Competitors will have all types of terrain thrown at them in one stage: Sandy river-beds, rocky ground and large grasslands.

 Stage 4: 56 Kilometers

Area: Namib Naukluft National Park

The race heads towards the mighty red dunes, across the Sesriem Canyon and into the Namib Naukluft National Park. The summit of Dune 45 offers a daunting challenge as competitors head towards the stage finish line.

 Stage 5: 32 Kilometers

Area: Sossusvlei/Naukluft National Park

It may be shorter than the rest of the stages but this is when the competitors will really challenge through the dunes. The last 11km will be take competitors right into the mighty red dunes through the "Dead Vlei" and into the world famous "Sossusvlei". Sightings of oryx are guaranteed in this area.

Registration fee is only R13,995 (Approximately $1,550 US Dollars) and includes:

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 3 AUGUST 2013 - LEG 1 OF TABLE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE

Hi Everyone

TABLE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE (TMC) TRAINING RUNS

Please note that due to the angst caused by car admin to the TMC Training Runs we have amended the training schedule to try and avoid it where possible.  So the new (and final) training run schedule is as follows:

Saturday 3 August:        Leg 1 (see full details below).

Saturday 10 August:      Leg 2.  This will be a run starting and finishing at Constantia Nek.  We will run out to the turnstile below the King’s Blockhouse (Start of Leg 2 / End of Leg 1) via Kirstenbosch and Newlands Forest and then back to Constantia Nek along the official Leg 2 Route, including the dreaded Rooikat Ravine.  In total it will be about 22km and will take 3.5 hours.

Saturday 31 August       Leg 3.  This will be a car admin intensive run.  We will get as many people as possible to meet Kloof Nek to drop cars between 06h15 and 06h30.  We will then climb into as few vehicles as we can squeeze into and drive through to Constantia Nek in time to start at about 07h00.  We will have to run around the Orange Kloof section on the road but will join the proper route at Myburgh’s Waterfall Ravine.  From there it will be official route the whole way to Kloof Nek.

PUFFER TABLE – 24 AUGUST 2013

A huge thank you to all of the people who have volunteered (some tentatively) for the morning.  If you are still keen then we can always do with extra hands.  Just let me know.

Although I will email the helpers separately I have attached the Comprehensive Guide to what we will do on the morning.  Yes, I know it is complete overkill but hey, rather too much info than too little.  So if you are

interested but want to know what it entails, start checking out the attachment.  You will fall asleep shortly after starting to read it.  When you wake up, give it another go.

To the current volunteers, I will email you later today or tomorrow morning.

SATURDAY 3 AUGUST 2013

LONGER FASTER GROUP

LEG 1 OF THE TABLE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE

Run Leader

Tim Bellairs 0823210299 / tim.bellairs@gmail.com

Start Time and Place

Kloof Nek car park.  Coming from the City, proceed straight up Buitengracht Street and it eventually splits and becomes Kloof Nek Road.  Keep going straight up to the top where there is an intersection of roads coming

from Camps Bay, Signal Hill and the Lower Cable Station.  At that intersection turn left into Tafelberg Road as if you are going to the Lower Cable Station.  Immediately on your left there are two parking areas.  Park in the

second (slightly higher) one on the left about 200m up the road.  The one where the SANParks Info Kiosk is.  That is where we start from.

Route

We will follow the official 1st Leg of the Table Mountain Challenge to the turnstile just below the King’s Blockhouse (about 8.5km).  If that is all you want to do then you can run down to Rhodes Memorial from there and

organise for someone to collect you.  The rest of us will climb to the Blockhouse and get onto the Lower Contour Path heading back towards the start again.  After 1km or so we will climb to the Middle Contour Path and

follow that to The Saddle.  From the Saddle we will drop back to the Lower Contour and run back to Kloof Corner and then down to the cars at Kloof Nek.

Distance

Around 20km.

Running Time

3 – 3.5 hours

Difficulty

Medium.  100% road / jeep track on the way out.  100% single track (with tar road option for those who are running out of time) on the way back.  Lots of little hills and some bigger ones.

Important Notes

·         Please wear / bring proper, weather-appropriate trail running gear.

·         Please bring sufficient food and drink to last for the entire run.

·         Do not leave valuables in your car.  This parking area has experienced break-ins before.  Leave everything else completely out of sight so as not to tempt would-be criminals.  There are no official car guards.

·         Please be sure to carry a cell phone with you with the run leader’s cell number stored in it.  People do get separated along the way and the route can be confusing if you haven’t done it before.

·         Please be aware that trail running and related activities are inherently riskier and more dangerous than road running.  You are participating in these runs voluntarily and whilst acsis VOB and the leaders of the runs take all reasonable precautions to ensure runner safety, it can never be fully guaranteed.  To this end, acsis VOB and the run leaders personally cannot be held liable for claims relating to injuries, disabilities and deaths, inter alia, that may occur during these events.  You are participating entirely at your own risk.  Please ensure that you are medically fit to be participating and make sure that you are properly kitted out for each particular run so as not to place yourself at undue risk.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS (acsis VOB Medium Distance Slower Trail Group)

CECILIA FOREST: 2ND LEG OF TABLE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE

Route

A reasonably demanding triangular route from the parking area up to the contour path above Kirstenbosch dam then to Skeleton Gorge before turning back and up and along the trail through Rooikat Ravine, passing Cecilia waterfall Spilhaus Ravine and then down to Constantia Nek before taking the low route back to the start.

Run Manager

Allison Lamb

Rendezvous and Start Time
