acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: OTHER GREAT RUNS AND UPCOMING TRAIL EVENTS

Hi Everyone

TRAIL SHOP

·         Otter Trail Run Entry – Annette Sim has an entry for sale.  This is the 11 hour event, not the 8 hour race.  Annette just wants to cover her entry cost of R3 000.  There is also a R400 substitution fee.  There is no accommodation booked yet so you are not having to take over any accommodation but will need to make your own plan.  If you are interested, please contact Annette on mejane@tiestop.co.za or cell 0825601954.  For more info on the race see http://theotter.co.za/the-race/entries-2013/

·         WildCoast WildRun Entry for sale – Richard Mudd has an entry available I have a ticket for the Wildrun available, I can no longer make it.  The ticket price is R6900 and the details are: Wildcoast Wildrun 2 (Race)*

19th  - 21st September 2013 (Thurs-Sat).  Registration on evening of the 18th (Wed).  [*Racing vs journey:  Both departures are identical in terms of what you get, with the exception that the 'racing' version will be televised on Supersport.  Times from both Wildcoast Wildrun departures will NOT be compared to determine an overall winner, and ONLY the 'Race' departure will be the focus for racing for the Wildcoast Wildrun trophy.]  If you are interested, please contact Richard on richardwmudd@gmail.com

·         Rush Training Bars – I have had quite a few people asking what the bars were that the CEO and I were scarfing down and raving about (and I handed a few out) on the Yellowwood Traverse Run a few weeks ago i.e. the one where I was laid low by cramps and made a full recovery after eating and drinking.  They are Rush Training Bars (all natural, gluten-free, preservative-free, wheat-free, egg and dairy-free) which are becoming widely available now.  The reason I was talking about them on the run was because one of our regulars, Gavin Memper (chef), was involved in the creation of the bar.  If you want more info on it then check out www.rushbar.co.za.  I have a flyer for them if you are interested.  Drop me an email and I will send it.

HOW TO TREAT THE INFORMATION BELOW:

As usual, tons of trail info below with even more new events added.  New stuff added each week too.  Please note that we try and keep the events in chronological order so new events tend to be added further down the email.  Skim through it, take what you need and bin the rest.

WEDNESDAY 26 JUNE 2013

CRAG TRAIL RUN

Date:  Wednesday 26 June 2013

Time:  ready to start running at 17h45 sharp

Leader:  Martin Kleynhans

Location:  Woody Ravine, Twelve Apostles, Camps Bay

Route description:  Starting from Theresa Ave, Rontree Estate in Camps Bay, we head steeply up to the Pipe Track, that venerable and popular promenade along the lower reaches of the Twelve Apostles, originally constructed in 1887 to allow access to workers (and materials) building the water pipeline from Slangolie Ravine to Kloof Nek. A right turn along the Pipe Track allows a bit of stretching of the legs, but all too soon we reach Woody Ravine and a steep slog up to the Apostles Path. Now we turn north (left) and enjoy a short run along the top to our descent via the dependable but sometimes slippery Kasteelspoort (Castle Gateway) to the Pipe Track, and we retrace our route to the starting point. Sunset is at 17h43 (getting later day by day now, but you still need a headlamp or torch).

Duration and distance:  approx 100 mins, approx 6 km

Walkers:  Camilla Grimbeek will lead the walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Grading

—   50 % runnable

—   A1 (some minor rock scrambling going up Woody but not exposed)

—   pack run

Starting point: Theresa Avenue, Rontree Estate (click for Google Maps)

Directions: From Kloof Nek take Camps Bay Drive down into Camps Bay. Turn at the THIRD left into Fiskaal and follow this road as it snakes up the mountainside. Fiskaal becomes Francolin and eventually Theresa. About 500 m from the start of Theresa you'll find our starting point at the end of a little side road on the left. Parking in the side road is limited, so find yourself a spot somewhere along Theresa Ave. Please park only on the sea side of the road, taking care not to obstruct anybody's driveway or a curve (solid line). This run takes a bit longer than our usual Wednesday outing so it is important that we start on time.

Equipment

headlamp or torch now essential

David Bywater & Dorothea Colombo

The NDC is a 220km, multi-day trail race, which will test both your physical and mental limits. Competitors originate from all four corners of the globe and will test themselves against the elements. Extreme heat, rugged terrain, rocky-mountains, the famous Sesriem Canyon, culminates in the summiting of two of the highest dunes in the world, namely Dune 45 and "Big Daddy".

The Route:

There are five stages ranging from 32 - 56 kilometers over five days. The stages are arranged to cover the most spectacular and varied part of the area. Each stage consists of several legs whereby competitors must pass through a checkpoint to collect water and where medical assistance is also available. Checkpoints are stationed roughly every 15km throughout each stage.

 Stage 1: 44 Kilometers

Area: Private Game Farms around Sesriem

The race begins with a slight and gradual incline across dry bushveld. The terrain is a mix of grassy plains, rocky hills and dry river beds. Competitors will be treated to awesome views of the landscape upon reaching the summit of a narrow mountain pass. Wildlife is regularly visible and competitors will be treated to sightings of springbok, oryx, zebras and ostrich.

 Stage 2: 44 Kilometers

Area: Naukluft National Park

The course traverses dry riverbeds and then heads through scattered vegetation and then into a dry big open gravel plain. Hereafter, competitors will get a taste of running over their first dunes and the trail becomes thick red dune sand.

 Stage 3: 44 Kilometers

Area: Private Game Farms around Sesriem

Day 3 offers a tougher test of the competitors' navigation skills. The scenery is magnificent and wildlife is plentiful. Competitors will have all types of terrain thrown at them in one stage: Sandy river-beds, rocky ground and large grasslands.

 Stage 4: 56 Kilometers

Area: Namib Naukluft National Park

The race heads towards the mighty red dunes, across the Sesriem Canyon and into the Namib Naukluft National Park. The summit of Dune 45 offers a daunting challenge as competitors head towards the stage finish line.

 Stage 5: 32 Kilometers

Area: Sossusvlei/Naukluft National Park

It may be shorter than the rest of the stages but this is when the competitors will really challenge through the dunes. The last 11km will be take competitors right into the mighty red dunes through the "Dead Vlei" and into the world famous "Sossusvlei". Sightings of oryx are guaranteed in this area.

Click here to register now at the discounted rate

Registration fee is only R13,995 (Approximately $1,550 US Dollars) and includes:

•             1 Night Accommodation in the luxury Sossusvlei Desert Camp, complete with pool, bar area and the most amazing view's. (Post race)

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 29 JUNE 2013 STELLENBOSCH MOUNTAIN WITH MATES, CELTICS AND CRAG

Hi Everyone

This coming weekend we are going to be doing something a little different and that has been a long time coming.  It’s time for a trip to the Boland to explore one of those mountains we see every weekend from our Peninsula runs.  We always say we must go and run there but seldom get to do it unless there is a race.  So here we go:

SATURDAY 29 JUNE 2013

LONGER FASTER GROUP

STELLENBOSCH MOUNTAIN WITH MATES, CELTICS AND CRAG

Run Leader

Pieter Holtzhausen (0849986386, holtzhau@gmail.com).  Pieter is a very experienced trail runner and knows the area extremely well.  As far as I know he is a member of MATES and he used to lead the CRAG Stellenbosch / Somerset West Wednesday runs a few years ago.

Start Time and Place

08h00 from intersection of Dorp and Ryneveld Streets, Stellenbosch.

Start directions

As you drive up in upper Dorp street, look for a Daneel Diamond glass building on your left (at the intersection of Dorp and Ryneveld). At that point turn right into a small parking lot.

Route

We meet in the heart of Stellenbosch town and start through the farm lands onto the single tracks of the foothills. We move around the mountain through forests and fynbos until we begin the big ascend, 700m of climb. At the top we find a grassy plateau and a view of the valley. Then it is time for one of the longest technical downhills in the Cape! Tie your laces. All the way down through Coetzenburg and back to the start.

Distance and Running Time

18 kms taking us 5 hours.

Important Notes

·         Please make sure you are dressed properly for the weather conditions on the day and that you are carrying the necessary gear (i.e. basic medical kit with space blanket, waterproof top, whistle etc).  Weather forecast will be sent out on Friday 28 June 2013.

·         It is essential that you also have sufficient nutrition to last the entire run.  It’s a long, tough run so be prepared.

·         There will be a braai afterwards so bring whatever you want to braai and drink.  Bring warm, dry clothes to change into afterwards.

·         Please be aware that trail running and related activities are inherently riskier and more dangerous than road running.  You are participating in these runs voluntarily and whilst acsis VOB and the leaders of the runs take all reasonable precautions to ensure runner safety, it can never be fully guaranteed.  To this end, acsis VOB and the run leaders personally cannot be held liable for claims relating to injuries, disabilities and deaths, inter alia, that may occur during these events.  You are participating entirely at your own risk.  Please ensure that you are medically fit to be participating and make sure that you are properly kitted out for each particular run so as not to place yourself at undue risk.

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: FRIDAY WRAP UP

Hi Everyone and Happy Mid-Winter to you all.

NOTICES

·         Hout Bay Trail Challenge Entry for Sale:  Larry Jenkins has one available and had the following to say – “

I have one, which I’m prepared to sell.

The entry fee that I paid was R550, that I’d like to get back.

I just checked the web-site and substitutions are permitted (for now, anyhow) at an additional cost of R100.

I might be interested in running just one leg of the challenge, if such a substitution becomes available.

But the team would have to accept that a 71 year old male would not help a fast time!

If you are interested in buying Larry’s entry or taking him on in your team then please contact him on aljie@cybersmart.co.za or 021 712-7759.

·         Looking for a Rhodes Trail Run 2013 Entry.  I know people generally don’t sell these but I believe there is a thriving secondary market in “Lending” them for a small fee.  Elizka is looking for an entry.  If anyone would like to lend or sell her their entry then please would you contact her on crazerunner@gmail.com .

·         Jane Holdcroft has asked me to circulate a note about two beautiful, loving dogs looking for a new home.  These are small /medium sized dogs (male 4 years old & 6 female years old) who love the forests and beaches as much as we trail runners do.  Extremely loving and good with children and other animals.  Obedience trained.  Healthy dogs, fully vaccinated and wormed etc.  You can be sure that if Jane is friends with the current owners (who are leaving SA) then these are exceptionally well-cared for dogs.  If you are able to help out or know anyone who will be interested then please contact either Jane for more info (07908 52582) or the owner Morag on 0722641848 .  I also have a small flyer with pictures if anyone wants to see the pooches.  Let me know.

FRIDAY 21 JUNE 2013

ORCA PUB-PUB BEGINNERS TRAIL RUN

Beryl Penny will be leading a trail run from Peddlers-On-The-Bend in Constantia this evening at about 18h15. Meet in the Peddlers car park.  This is specifically for Beginner Trail Runners.  About 8 – 10 km.  If you want to chat to Beryl, you can call her on 0712679752.

Remember to take a headlamp or torch of some kind as well as wet weather gear.  We should be in for some rain this evening.  See the weather forecast below.

Bring warm, dry clothes to change into afterwards and try and stay for a drink afterwards.

SATURDAY 22 JUNE 2013

acsis VOB LONGER FASTER TRAIL GROUP

No run this weekend.  Jane and Freda are away running Grootvadersbosch with a large gang of regulars and I am currently having a post-exam nervous breakdown (okay I just haven’t been able to get my stuff together in time).  Many others have also gone off to the Sandveld Tortoise Trail Trot and of course it is also the Fish River Canyon Ultra this weekend.  Not many of us left in Cape Town.  But I know that the CEO is keen to run tomorrow as well as Sunday.  So if anyone is keen for a light-ish run on Saturday, please let me know during the course of the day and I will put something together.  Please note I will only send details to people who respond to this.

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV at the foot of Farmer Peck’s Valley off Boyes Drive in time to start running at 0730

Run Leader

Richard Rossiter

How to get there?
From Southern Suburbs come down the Blue Route M3 to end and turn left down to the Main Road and right as if going to Muizennberg or Simon’s Town.  Then after a short istance turn right into Boyes Drive M75.  About a Kilometre after the road narrows you go down a steep hill into a dip and up the other side.  Shortly after the bottom of the dip look for a stone wall on your right and watch out for the “hole in the wall” with a green  notice board above it.  That’s it.    Suggest park on the seaward side of road.

Warning There is a speed camera at the bottom of the dip.
