acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: OTHER GREAT TRAIL RUNS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Hi Everyone

I know this email is getting massive now but there does seem to be a demand for it so will keep it coming for now.  TrailWP!  Help!

GENERAL

·         Lift required to Jonkershoek: Luc Steens is looking for a lift to the start of Jonkershoek 35km race this coming weekend.  Luc lives in Oranjezicht so if anyone is going out from the general City Bowl Area and can help out with a lift please would you drop him an email on luc.steens@bnpparibascadiz.com .  He will find his own way home.

·         On matters Jonkershoek, Michelle Deans has a 10km entry for Jonkershoek for sale.  If you are keen on it, please contact Michelle directly on m.deans@lantic.net .

·         Oorlogskloof Results (thanks Jana B):  I have posted these at the end of this email.  But I have to share a story from the race which is just too funny (also because I have been involved in a similar incident myself, hiking the Tsitsikamma Trail, not running).  I am not sure how much poetic licence there is in this story but by all accounts, the winning men’s team used some good old fashioned strategic race planning (other people use stronger language) to achieve their victory.  Apparently Mark Pikker (acsis VOB) and Martin Kleynhans (MATES) went sprinting out of the starting blocks until they were out of side of the next chasing team, Jayde Butler (MATES) and Lloyd Priestman (not sure which club, if any.  Michele aka Alice, can you claim this one?).  Then they ducked and hid behind a car and waited for said Jayde and Lloyd to come steaming past in hot pursuit and then tucked in behind them, keeping out of sight.  This forced J & L to spend the whole race forcing the pace to try and catch spooks who were actually behind them.  This resulted in J & L blowing (the CEO says he heard the pop) at 38km at which point M & M dashed past to resume the lead and hold on to win.  Ugly, I know, but also too funny for words.  Then in another podium position in the 18km at Oorlogskloof Gavin Memper took 2nd Open Male.  Well done Gavin.

·         In other news, one of our regulars, Alison Chait, took 3rd lady at Arabella.  Not sure which distance but in any event, a fantastic achievement.  Well done Alison.  This confidence booster has inspired Alison on to do the Knysna Half but she doesn’t have an entry.  If anyone has one to sell her please drop her an email on alison.chait@gmail.com .  I have a feeling I am opening the floodgates here, but, no matter.

·         4 Hills 4 Lindsay as a Puffer Qualifier:  I have been in touch with Andy Campbell and he has confirmed that if you successfully completed this run last weekend, the Puffer Committee will accept it as a qualifier for Puffer for this year.  Please note that this may not be the case for next year though so please don’t target it as a qualifying run in future (or at least wait for further confirmation next year).

·         If anyone can provide running company from Constantia Nek to the Blockhouse and back this coming Workers Day (Wed 1 May) please let me know.  Sneh Gumede is looking for a group doing that route (even if you don’t all run together).  Let me (Tim) know and I will put you in touch with Sneh.

HOW TO TREAT THE INFORMATION BELOW:

As usual, tons of trail info below with even more new events added.  New stuff added each week too.  Please note that we try and keep the events in chronological order so new events tend to be added further down the email.  Skim through it, take what you need and bin the rest.

WEDNESDAY  1 MAY 2013

CRAG TRAIL RUN

No run because of Public Holiday – Workers Day

To join the CRAG email list, send an email to crag-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

THURSDAY 2 MAY 2013

CELTICS THURSDAY WINTER TRAIL RUNS

Please note the earlier 17:30 start time

Headlamps: It's getting dark at the end of our runs - particularly for the more social groups, so it now compulsory to carry a headlamp or torch with you. We hate having to turn people away, but we also don't want to lose people to injuries...

This Thursday 02nd May, the run will start at 17h30 sharp at Constantia Nek.

We start the run in the parking area immediately adjacent to the traffic circle at the Nek, and opposite the restaurant.

The route winds up (and up) the bridle / concrete path to the dams (Victoria & Alexandra) on the back table where we’ll turn around and those with quick legs can open up for the downhill leg.  Essentially this is part of the Table Mountain 16km route minus the trip around the dams.

This is a non-technical route and the only difficulty is the climb.  For this reason it’s given a 7/10 grading.

Distance: +-9kms

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. Thanks

Part of the day???s excitement is the introduction of the  VWS Jonkershoek Fireman???s Revenge 14km Trail Run and the Mellow Yellow 6km Fun Run, both of which take in sweeping views of Simonsberg and the surrounding mountains ??? not to be missed!

There are two routes to choose from:

VWS TRAIL CHALLENGE – 26 MAY 2013

VWS Trail Challenge

This year the race is on Sunday 26 May 2013, same successful route as last year.

For those who don’t know, every year we hold the VWS Trail Challenge – a 10km or 25km run (or walk) across the face of Table Mountain, starting and finishing in Deer Park, Vredehoek. This brings in about 30% of our annual operational budget – we use this income for training and equipping our new recruits, new firefighting equipment, and maintaining and fuelling our vehicles. Literally without it we would not be able to fight fires. We encourage anyone who enters to get themselves sponsored to run the race to bring in extra, much needed funds.

Please feel free to enter yourselves, and please pass on the attached flyer to anyone you know who might want to run the race. Entries are limited, and we always sell out, so enter quickly. SANParks has stopped issuing permits to new races on the mountain, so this is one of the few opportunities to run in an organised race in this fantastic setting – the very mountain we protect!

MEDIA RELEASE

Sports Science Institute of South Africa

For immediate release

4 April 2013

“TAMING THE PUFFER”

Presented by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in conjunction with New Balance and the Sweat Shop

“Running in Heaven – feeling like hell” is the legendary PUFfeR Trail’s race slogan. A more apt description is hard to find for the mother of all trail runs, which weaves its way pre-dawn from Cape Point over terrain of every kind, reaching its highest point at Maclear’s Beacon (1085m). The journey is completed at the Oceana Yacht club, some 80km and many hours and adventures later. Not for the faint-hearted or the untrained, this trail run had its beginnings in 1995, with a field of just 18 hardy souls. Nineteen years later, in 2013, 150 hopeful trail runners will take on the challenge and attempt to tame the tempestuous PUFfeR.

Fishhoek Athletic Club is the event organiser, and Race Director Andy Campbell has gone out of his way to find new partners to give the participants an “experience of a life-time”. As he sums it up “it’s all about the runners and I just want them to have a magical day in the mountains”.  Teaming up with the 2013 event, but with an eye on long-term involvement, are Lipco Law for All, New Balance and the Sports Science Institute of SA (SSISA).  Vera Nagtegaal of Lipco Law for All, herself a 2013 novice PUffeR entrant, is thrilled with the new race title sponsorship. She is actively working with fellow sponsors to make it a highly memorable day. New Balance are already well on their way to designing  PUFfeR gear to delight entrants, and with their company slogan  “Let’s make excellent happen” the runners couldn’t be in better hands (or trail shoes)!

Ensuring that runners feel less hellish when running in PUFfeR heaven is what the SSISA has taken on as their challenge! They have unique and specialised programmes to offer runners to make them “strong enough to run”. In addition, they are putting together an amazing workshop at the SSISA, in conjunction with the Sweat Shop, on Monday 24 June at 17h45, entitled “Taming the PUFfeR”. Prospective runners and aspiring entrants will be exposed to inspirational coverage of this majestic route; trail running guru and wonder-runner, Linda Doke sharing her gems of wisdom, along with some very practical and down-to earth advice from SSISA experts on solid training in the remaining  two months; coping in adverse weather conditions; gearing up for the journey, as well as fuelling and hydrating during the event.

There will also be amazing lucky draw prizes up for grabs, including Sweat Shop vouchers, two head-to-toe New Balance gear vouchers, memberships at the SSISA gym, three vouchers from Lipco Law for All – giving each winner free legal advice and legal cover of up to R120 000 for a year;  stunning prizes from BUFF, as well as the incredible prize of ONE free entry to run the 2013 PUFfeR – assuming you didn’t get in!

This workshop is NOT to be missed, and we recommend you sign up soon to secure your seat! The entrance fee is just R65 and includes light snacks, some notes, and access to the best info out there on the PUFfeR. And of course you get to mingle with fellow equally nutty trail runners of all calibres. Registration kicks off at 17h30, and a cash bar will be available.

E-mail workshop@ssisa.com without delay – put it in your diary and we look forward to seeing you there!
