acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: EASTER WEEKEND WRAP UP

Hi Everyone

This serves as confirmation that there are no acsis VOB-organised trail runs this weekend due to the two Two Oceans Trail Races on Friday and the Half Marathon and Ultra Marathon on Saturday.  We would like to wish all runners participating in these events the best of luck.  Have fun and be careful out there.

There will, however, be a MATES Trail Run on Saturday morning as previously advertised:

SATURDAY 30 MARCH

MATES TRAIL RUN

We (MATES) are going to run from Price Drive in Constantia.  It is the next road left after the Groot Constantia turn off if you are travelling along the Constantia Main Road from Constantia Village in the direction of Constantia Nek.  In fact you MUST approach it from this direction because the Constantia Nek / Rhodes Drive / top of Southern Cross Drive areas may well already be closed for Two Oceans.  Having said this, please note that there may also be issues in the area between the Kendal Road exit from the M3 / Spaanschemat River Road / Ladies Mile Ext and the Constantia Main Rd / Parish Rd intersection with the Half Marathon (thanks for the reminder Nik). Keep Driving up Price Drive ignoring the Belair Drive turn off (right), until you come to a point where the road takes a sharp right hand bend and there is a small parking area on the left.  This is the starting point.

Route: Across to vlakkenberg manganese, Chappies, 4 ways down to the road. Join the 2 oceans runners for 3 kays to east fort up to the manganese vlakkenberg and back'

Time: 06.30.
Duration: 3hrs.+-
Date: 30/3/2013. SATURDAY

Dude of the day. The one and only SPENCER.

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: OTHER GREAT TRAIL RUNS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Hi Everyone

As usual, tons of trail info below.  Please note that we try and keep the events in chronological order so new events tend to be added further down the email.  Skim through it, take what you need and bin the rest.

ADMIN

FOUND: JACK RUSSELL PUPPY: TOKAI FOREST / SILVERMINE

Michelle du Toit has drawn my attention, via Facebook page Life is Savage, to a Jack Russell puppy that was recently found in Tokai Forest on the jeep track that goes up to Silvermine  (mountain bikers, you’ll know what I mean).  If anyone has lost such a pooch or knows someone who has you can leave a comment on Twitter ( @planetpi ) – don’t ask, I don’t know.  Or if like me you are not a Tweeter then drop me an email and I will see if my 7 year nephew can help me get more details.

WEDNESDAY  27 MARCH 2013

CRAG TRAIL RUN

Leader:  Paul "Sawbones" Rowe

Date:  Wednesday 27 March 2013

Time:  ready to start running at 17h45 sharp

Location:  Alphen, Diep River and Klaasenbosch Trails (incl some unavoidable bits of t*r)

Route description:  We start from the Constantia Sports Centre/Virgin Active/VOB grounds, cross Constantia Main Road, and head for the beginning of the Alphen Trail next to the Alphen Hotel. We run alongside the stream, actually the Diep River, which has its origins in Cecilia Gorge, following this pretty and well-known trail, avoiding strollers, their dogs and children, and continue straight on until we reach Brommersvlei Road. Across the road we take the first of several breathers, then continue up the Diep River Trail, crossing the Bel Ombre, Monterey and Bellevue bits of t*r, climbing all the way to Southern Cross Drive. Now a right turn takes us up to and across Rhodes Drive and into Cecilia Forest, with a steep uphill slog to the watering point, followed by some easy, level, jeep track running through the plantation, around the SANParks buildings, and DOWN at last to the main Cecilia Forest parking area; some more t*r brings us to Spilhaus Ave and the crazy downhill slalom through the trees along the Klaasenbosch Trail, which we follow until we again reach the Alphen Trail and the flat, fast finish to the Alphen Hotel, before the final gentle uphill back to the start. Sunset is at 18h44 — you may want to bring a headlamp/torch, especially for the last 30 mins or so.

Duration and distance:  approx 90 mins, 10 km

Walkers:  Gavin Mohammed will lead walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Starting point: Constantia Sports Centre / Virgin Active / acsis VOB (click for Google Maps)

Directions: On the M3 heading south (out of the city) take the M41 Constantia/Hout Bay Main Road exit, which goes through a full 180° hairpin and comes to a stop sign at the M41; turn left towards Constantia and pass under the M3, cross over the traffic lights, then turn left at the next lights into the Constantia Sports Centre/Virgin Active/VOB running club grounds, turn immediately left just inside the entrance, and park on the grass near the cricket field; coming from the south (Muizenberg side) on the M3, take the same exit, turn left into the M41 at the traffic light, and left at the next one, as above.

Equipment

headlamp or torch may be necessary for the last 30 mins or so

THURSDAY 28 MARCH 2013

CELTICS THURSDAY SUMMER TRAIL RUNS

On 28th March we meet at Kloof Nek for the run to start at 18h00. We will do the Signal Hill – Lion’s Head circuit.

Meet in the parking area on the left just 100 metres up Tafelberg Road from the traffic circle on Kloof Nek.

The route starts from the Kloof Nek parking area (where the Sanparks info centre is).  Our route will start with a crossing of Kloof road at the Nek (please be careful), head up Signal Hill Road, and then almost immediately we turn left and head along the single track path that follows the spine of Signal Hill to the viewpoint at the end of Signal Hill. We then head back the way we came for a short while, until we get to the foot of Lion’s Head itself, where we turn right (west). We will take a beautiful route back along a scenic path that runs along the lower western slopes of Lion’s Head well above the houses of Bantry Bay and Clifton with superb views of the setting sun.

Difficulty grading: 7/10 (not too much in the way of hills, but some sections where the path is a little uneven underfoot.)

Distance is 9 km’s.

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. Thanks

K-WAY PLATTEKLIP CHARITY CHALLENGE 6 APRIL 2013

Website: http://www.charitychallenge.co.za/

The event: On 6 April 2013 roughly 175 intrepid participants will attempt to see how many times they can summit Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge for charity. Each lap is 5.5 km in distance, 760 metres of climbing, and will take approximately 2 hours. The route up Platteklip Gorge includes 800 double-size steps over a distance of 2.1 km. Once at the top, the contestants need to run to the upper cable station, catch a lift down and then run back to the start.

Donations raised over the past 6 years by Argusx2, Charity Challenge and individual donors, funded the grassroots Masikulisane Crèche with running costs, building extensions, resources and capacity building. We are pleased to announce that by late 2009 the crèche met the requirements and became registered with Social Development as an Educare Centre and is now reaching a place of greater self-sustainability.

Prizes: There are more than R 5 000 in prizes this year, allocated to men and women who get up to the top first and to those who achieve the most laps. Incidentally, the record is 11 laps for men and 8 laps for women.

Minimum summits: FOUR

Route: You are going to see how many times you can summit Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge. The route takes you from the lower cable station, along Tafelberg Road, up Platteklip Gorge and across the table to the upper cable station. You then get a free lift down in the cable car and you start again. The distance is 5.5 km and is 760 m of climbing, and should take you approximately 1.5 hrs on average. You need to be fit and strong or you will not make it.

Entry fee: Nothing — unless you don't make the minimum sponsorship, and then you will have to make up the difference.

Minimum sponsorship: R2 000 — you need to raise at least this much for the charity. It is not difficult to get sponsorship if you are computer literate. It is as simple as emailing your friends and family and directing them to a link on our web page where they can sponsor you per lap. Last year some athletes raised up to R50 000 each. People can sponsor you for a minimum of R100. The reason for the minimum sponsorship is that there are many hard costs involved with staging this event and you also get a lot of goodies for free. You can also sponsor yourself to top up your account before the event.

Support: The organisers of the K-Way Platteklip Charity Challenge will provide all nutritional and medical requirements on the day.

Date: 6 April 2013, although you need to be available on both Saturday and the next day, Sunday 7 April; should it be too windy to host the event on the Saturday, we will run on the Sunday because the cable car does not operate in gale force conditions.

The charity: The charity this year is Sinenjongo High School in Joe Slovo Park, Milnerton. It serves an extremely impoverished community which has a high unemployment rate and a large number of children-run families. Due to its location close to upmarket areas, it is rated by the Western Cape Education Department as a Quintile 4 school requiring learners to pay school fees to help cover the costs of running the school. However, very few of the learners can afford the R250 a year school fees.

The prefabricated school has few, or no, resources: no hall, no library/resource centre, no staff room, no sports fields or facilities.

In spite of this, corporate sponsorship of the school in recent years has enabled the school to lift its matric pass rate from 27% in 2008 to close to 90% in 2011. Last year 77 matrics passed, double that of the previous year, with 56 qualifying to go on to tertiary education. This was achieved by private sponsorship covering the salaries of additional top-class maths, science and English teachers, who are tasked not only with teaching but also with upskilling the other educators in order to make a sustainable difference.

The K-Way Platteklip Charity Challenge is joining forces with the corporate sponsors to ensure these and other programmes can continue so that Sinenjongo, already a beacon of hope in this otherwise desolate landscape, can be transformed into a Centre of Excellence and retain more and more learners within the school system through to matric.

Teams: This year we are going to allow teams of 2 or 3 people with a minimum of 6 summits per team. Team minimum sponsorship to raise is R4 000. If you want to enter as a team, please simply fill in the name of the team on the form below where it says "Full Name:" and tick the box to say that you are a team. You will get a follow-up email requesting details of the team members. The format of the team entry will be a relay, with each team member doing an equal number of summits. You can complete the challenge as a relay or together, as long as all the summits are completed.

Get off the couch and up Platteklip, over and over again.  Be the person to make a difference and show what you can do for charity.

We look forward to hearing from you.

CONSTANTIA VALLEY TRAIL RUN – 14 APRIL 2013 – ENTRIES OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The highly popular and successful Constantia Valley Trail Run returns for its second year, still sponsored by VIVOBAREFOOT.  Limited entries available.  There is a choice between a 21km and 11.5km Trail Race and a 4.5km Family Trail Fun Run.  The runs follow wonderfully scenic routes through the Constantia Vineyards, some of which are completely closed to the public for the rest of the year.  So it really is a rare opportunity to have access to some of these farms.

The event is so well organised one would be forgiven for thinking it is a WPA event but it is not.  Club colours and WPA licences / temporary numbers NOT NECESSARY unless you desperately want to.  Run in whatever you want to (although guys in extremely tight, Borat cycling bibs are discouraged).

I have a very comprehensive race flyer available for anyone who wants it – email me.

To check out all of the details in the meantime, please go to www.cvtrailrun.co.za .  Online entries at www.racetraq.co.za .  Otherwise you may enter at Sportsmans Warehouse (Rondebosch and Tokai) on specific dates specified in the flyer.

VWS TRAIL CHALLENGE – 26 MAY 2013

VWS Trail Challenge

This year the race is on Sunday 26 May 2013, same successful route as last year.

For those who don’t know, every year we hold the VWS Trail Challenge – a 10km or 25km run (or walk) across the face of Table Mountain, starting and finishing in Deer Park, Vredehoek. This brings in about 30% of our annual operational budget – we use this income for training and equipping our new recruits, new firefighting equipment, and maintaining and fuelling our vehicles. Literally without it we would not be able to fight fires. We encourage anyone who enters to get themselves sponsored to run the race to bring in extra, much needed funds.

Please feel free to enter yourselves, and please pass on the attached flyer to anyone you know who might want to run the race. Entries are limited, and we always sell out, so enter quickly. SANParks has stopped issuing permits to new races on the mountain, so this is one of the few opportunities to run in an organised race in this fantastic setting – the very mountain we protect!

OLD FISHERMANS TRAIL CHALLENGE – 8 JUNE 2013

An old favourite which needs no introduction.  But if you are new to the game, check out www.fishermanschallenge.co.za

The bad news: Online Entries opened at 12h00 today and the race is full already.

Check out all of the details and book your spot on www.mountainextreme.co.za .  I have a flyer that appears to be resistant to the time honoured Copy and Paste method of communicating information.  If anyone wants it please email me and I will forward it.

Join our April 2013 Boot Camp with SSISA programme and you can get this all in one go! This fun-filled 8-week programme, run by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa is available in Newlands, Durbanville and now Pinelands!

Boot Camp with SSISA - is an action-packed programme of themed, fun-filled outdoor training that works the body, mind and spirit.   It caters for 2 different levels of fitness.  Whilst the Boot Camp with SSISA is geared towards currently active folk looking for a new challenge, the Lite programme is ideal for those who are not so fit and need some motivation.  It includes comprehensive health and fitness assessments, three weekly one- hour outdoor sessions run by Biokineticists as well as exciting off site sessions at beautiful locations and weekend hikes.

Says previous Boot Camp with SSISA participant - “I really enjoyed being pushed to do exercises I would never had done voluntarily. The camaraderie of the group was fantastic, the sports fields were convenient and easy to get to and it was great to have other venues from time to time.  The trainers were excellent and really booted us all into better fitness! “

V&A WATERFRONT LAUNCHES FREE OUTDOOR FITNESS INITIATIVE

The V&A Waterfront, in collaboration with the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) and Virgin Active, will host a series of free outdoor health and fitness classes, workshops, demonstrations and health screening during March and April. The V&A Outdoor Active campaign will take place in two parts, with the first leg in partnership with SSISA from 7 to 15 March and the second in partnership with Virgin Active from 29 March to 10 April.

All classes and workshops are free and are centred on health and fitness. Some of the sessions to watch out for in March include: Boot Camp, Pilates, OptiFit running, strength training and Yoga. The expert staff from the SSISA will help Capetonians get back on track through their free health screening sessions and thought-provoking workshops such as the one entitled “2013 Health Trends- what to expect”. The V&A Pier Head and North Wharf both situated on the water’s edge; the Croquet Lawn near the Portswood Hotel; the Amphitheatre and the new Boardwalk running route will provide inspirational settings for the Outdoor Active events.

Signing up for the classes is easy; simply register online at the V&A Waterfront website at www.waterfront.co.za. Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email as well as a reminder email the day before the class or workshop for which you have signed up. Plus, the V&A Waterfront will be providing all class participants with a booklet of special offers, redeemable at a range of food and beverage and retail outlets at the V&A Waterfront.

“With all that our seaside city has to offer, it’s no wonder Capetonians are outdoor fitness fanatics,” says Carla White, Spokesperson for the V&A Waterfront.

“The V&A Waterfront is another ideal location where locals can be active and get fit and we wanted to offer them something special. One of the unique features of the V&A Waterfront is its wide open picturesque public spaces, and this initiative is the perfect way to take what are usually indoor activities, such as Pilates, outdoors - and to share these spaces with our community and our visitors,” says White. “We are excited to have experts from the SSISA and Virgin Active on board to motivate and activate those who are keen to make healthy choices – but just need a bit of a push and a beautiful setting to inspire them”

The recently built boardwalk is a path that runs along the breakwater side of the property and has a number of lookout spots along the route that offer great viewing points. The boardwalk also forms part of a scenically posted running route through the property, with 2.2km and 5km sign posted route options.

The V&A Waterfront’s location on the edge of town as well as the surrounding CBD and Atlantic Seaboard areas makes it perfect for urban living flat dwellers to exercise outdoors in a safe and picturesque environment. The campaign takes place at the tail end of summer and is ideal for making the most of the great Cape Town weather before the cold weather sets in.  For added convenience, exercisers can even pick up dinner at one of the many food and beverage offerings before heading home.

“We’ve long been a hub of great water-based activities. The basin has been a popular spot for dragon boat racing where rowers can be seen both training and racing year-round. The canal is used frequently by swimming squads, stand up paddle boarding and surfski enthusiasts and is also used regularly for triathlon training,” continues White.

The property is nearly equal in size to 180 rugby fields – excluding the water – and now Outdoor Active gives the surrounding communities yet another way to enjoy this everyday destination which offers so much more than shopping, dining out and entertainment.

People of all levels of fitness are invited to take part, from beginners to fanatics – there is something for everyone.
