acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: OTHER GREAT RUNS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Hi Everyone

Yes, it’s late, I know………………………….sorry………………………

WEDNESDAY 27 FEBRUARY 2013

CRAG TRAIL RUN

Leader:  Gavin Goldsmith

Date:  Wednesday 27 February 2013

Time:  ready to start running at 18h00 sharp (NB: NOTE LATER START TO GIVE YOU MORE TIME TO GET THERE)

Location:  Tokai Forest

Route description: This run is truly in the spirit of CRAG and we'll be adhering to a number of its basic principles and adages as we venture along the slopes of (what was) the Tokai forest. The first adage to be tested is "when in doubt, UP" and clearly this week's run leader has far too many doubts . . . So we start by going up, uP, UP to Level 5. Along the way we'll be practising the Group Run principle of regular regroups to catch out breath. We'll make our way along L5 before zooming along a lovely little path, known by some as Walker's Folly, at times a bit overgrown. It also has moments where the drop-off may leave you "feeling" a little exposed (illustrating another adage, which holds that the leader is always more scared than you), but it's perfectly safe. We'll make our way along this path until it joins up with the t*r road which heads up to the mast. From here we make our way down a combination of jeep tracks and cycle tracks back to the start, applying the principle of "when you get to a fork, take it". If you're a little nervous of heights and exposure, please let the run leader know at the start. Also, this area is a "no go" zone for dogs, so don't bring any - sorry! Sunset is at 19h21.

Duration and distance:  approx 90 mins, 9 km

Walkers:  Ezan Wilson will lead walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Starting point: Tokai Forest Arboretum parking area (click for Google Maps)

Directions: From the city/southern suburbs, take the M3 Van der Stel freeway (Blue Route), watching out for the speed camera at the Ladies Mile/Bergvliet exit, and take the next exit for Tokai; at the traffic light turn right and head up Tokai Road to the circle and continue past Steenberg Golf Estate (on the left) and the picnic area (on the right) towards the Manor House (keeping a sharp look-out for 2 speed bumps); at the T-junction turn left and follow the gravel road up and around the bend to the parking area. From the Muizenberg side, take the same exit off the freeway, but turn left into Tokai Road. From Main Road, head straight up Tokai Road.

Car guards:  27 Feb:   Kate le Roux & Storm Durr

CONSTANTIA VALLEY TRAIL RUN – 14 APRIL 2013 – ENTRIES NOW OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The highly popular and successful Constantia Valley Trail Run returns for its second year, still sponsored by VIVOBAREFOOT.  Limited entries available.  There is a choice between a 21km and 11.5km Trail Race and a 4.5km Family Trail Fun Run.  The runs follow wonderfully scenic routes through the Constantia Vineyards, some of which are completely closed to the public for the rest of the year.  So it really is a rare opportunity to have access to some of these farms.

The event is so well organised one would be forgiven for thinking it is a WPA event but it is not.  Club colours and WPA licences / temporary numbers NOT NECESSARY unless you desperately want to.  Run in whatever you want to (although guys in extremely tight, Borat cycling bibs are discouraged).

I have a very comprehensive race flyer available for anyone who wants it – email me.

To check out all of the details in the meantime, please go to www.cvtrailrun.co.za .  Online entries at www.racetraq.co.za .  Otherwise you may enter at Sportsmans Warehouse (Rondebosch and Tokai) on specific dates specified in the flyer.

MERRELL NIGHT RUN SERIES – GROOT CONSTANTIA – 2 / 9 / 16 APRIL 2013

There will be 3 night races on the dates above.  There will also be a choice between a 6 and 8km route.  Races start 18h30 from Simon’s Restaurant.

For full details check out http://mountainrunner.co.za/events/merrell-night-run-series/

JONKERSHOEK MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE – SA LONG DISTANCE TRAIL CHAMPIONSHIPS – 5 MAY 2013

To be awarded the distinction of holding the SA Long Distance Trail Championships you must know that this is a REAL Trail Event.  Well done Altus Schreuder.

Please check this out at the website above.  Hopefully I will have more comprehensive details soon.

OLD FISHERMANS TRAIL CHALLENGE – 8 JUNE 2013

An old favourite which needs no introduction.  But if you are new to the game, check out www.fishermanschallenge.co.za

The bad news: Online Entries opened at 12h00 today and the race is full already.

AUSSENKEHR DESERT EXTREME TRAIL RUN – 20 TO 22 JUNE 2013 – ENTRIES OPEN

The entries to the multi-day desert extreme event are now open.  50 places only.  Stunning desert trail run along the northern bank of the Orange River i.e. southern Namibia.  Entries close on 20 May 2013 or when all places are filled.

Check out all of the details and book your spot on www.mountainextreme.co.za .  I have a flyer that appears to be resistant to the time honoured Copy and Paste method of communicating information.  If anyone wants it please email me and I will forward it.

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 2 MARCH 2013 - 2 OCEANS TRAIL RACE ROUTE

Hi Everyone

Sorry about the late notice.  But don’t worry if you can’t make this one.  We will run it again (I hope) before the event.

SATURDAY 2 MARCH 2013

LONGER ROUTE GROUP - 2 OCEANS TRAIL RACE ROUTE

Run Leader

Tim Bellairs: 0823210299 / tim.bellairs@gmail.com

Start Time and Place

06h30 ready to run at UCT.  Coming from Southern Suburbs heading towards the City on the M3 take the UCT turn off just after the Rhodes Memorial turn off.  As you enter UCT bear left and up a small hill to a Stop sign.  The parking area / departure point will be straight in front of you.  Coming from the north (City / West Coast / Northern Suburbs) get from the N1 or N2 onto the M3 heading south and take the Woolsack Drive exit left (just after Mostert’s Mill and before UCT).  As you exit, keep in the right lane up to a set of traffic lights.  Turn right at the lights and follow the road under the M3 and up into UCT.  At the Sports Centre keep left into Rugby Road and follow it.  It will bear right and up a small hill to a Stop sign. The parking area / departure point will be straight in front of you.

Route

The 22km Two Oceans Trail Race Route.  There will be a shorter option in which you can leave us at the Kings Blockhouse (about 12km) and head straight back to the cars.

Distance

22km / 12km as above.

Running Time

At least 4 hours for the whole route.  We are NOT going to do it at full tilt but it is not going to be a very slow run either.  A slow group will be accommodated when we do this route next time.

Difficulty

Tough but mainly because of distance.

Important Notes

·         Bring lots of water (hydration pack) and energy snacks.

·         Dress appropriately to the weather conditions.

·         Take precautions against the sun.  The first half of the run has very little shade.

·         We need to stick together in the Kings Blockhouse area.  Mugger territory.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS - Constantia Nek “Hunt for Red Disa”

Brief Description of Route

This is the season for the Red Disa [ Disa uniflora Bergius] commonly referred to as Pride of Table Mountain.  It can often be seen in the valleys close to the aqueduct and the Hely-Hutchinson Dam so this week’s route is planned to get us there.

From the parking area up the shortcuts and concrete road to De Villiers dam then the Smut’s Trail to the top of Nursery ravine, turn in towards the Hely-Hutchinson Dam, run under the dam wall and then up the gully where the Red Disa may be sighted over to aqueduct kloof and return via the Smut’s track and down to the parking area..

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV in the Constantia Nek parking area in time to start running at 0615

Terrain and Distance

A good long climb up the dreaded shortcuts then interesting scenic going along single track gravel, rock and sandy trail along the Smuts track and around the mountains. More or less 12-13 kms taking in the region of  3hrs

Recovery Group & Fay’s Walking Group

These groups will follow the same route as above but at their own less demanding pace!

Next Week there will be No Run because of the Constantia Village 15Km Road Race

This race is organised by our parent club acsis-VOB so we will not be running that day.
How about volunteering to help out at a water table or with the marshaling?

Have a great week Everyone.

Cheers

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: OTHER GREAT RUNS AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Hi Everyone

As usual, TONS of information below.  Even more so than usual with even more interesting new stuff added.  Please just skim through and take whatever grabs your fancy and bin the rest.

Also, please let me know what I am missing.

ADMIN ETC

·         This is an appeal on of our regulars, Karen Jennings: The Treatment Action Campaign is looking for donations to support TAC’s “runners for health”. Attached doc (this will be sent in a separate email) gives more background, but in a nutshell this year (message from Ms Vuyiseka Dubula, Treatment Action Campaign- General Secretary), they have only “registered two runners for Comrades and the rest of the 8 are on the waiting list for April opening because we didn’t have enough money to register all of them.  We will welcome donations dear, thanks”.   In preparing to run Comrades myself (Karen), I’m aware how hard getting there is, and how much harder it must be for other people with difficult health and financial constraints. The appeal is for 7 people to come forward to donate an entry, i.e. R350 (or groups of people to make up an entry) and I’ll do the 8th: please to email me at Karen.jennings@capetown.gov.za and I’ll provide details.

·         After the Table Mountain Trailers run over Vlakkenberg / Bokkemanskloof two weeks ago I promised to forward the “business card” of Therapeutic Studio (Sabine Roberts / Heidi Rohr who were running with us) to some people but I can’t remember who they were.  Sabine and Heidi are the ones who have always been seen massaging broken bodies at the end of The Table Mountain Challenge.  Just so that I don’t miss anyone out I will send the flyer out in the same email as  out with doc mentioned above.

So if you are not in a position to sponsor one of the athletes for TAC and you also don’t need the details for Therapeutic Studios then please just delete the email that follows this one.

WEDNESDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2013

CRAG TRAIL RUN

Leader:  Cher Vossberg

Date:  Wednesday 20 February 2013

Time:  ready to start running at 17h45 sharp

Location:  Upper Contour, northern slopes of TM

Route description: This week's run will be a slightly shortened version of the old classic, kind of a CRAG Lite, because our leader is racing in the Bat Run on Saturday, and some of us may be recovering from a beating taken on the t*r during the Peninsula Marathon on Sunday . . . I say no more. From the start at the Kloof Nek parking area we take the usual quad-buster climb up to Kloof Corner, admire the views over Clifton, Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles, then race (carefully) along the contour route to Platteklip Gorge. Then we head down the steps and turn RIGHT for a short jog along Tafelberg Road before dropping down, down, down, deep into Deer Park, past a kramat, then come some of the way back up and return on a combination of jeep/single track to Kloof Nek. Sunset is at 19h30.

Duration and distance:  approx 70 mins, 8 km

Walkers:  Tim Bellairs will lead walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Starting point: Kloof Nek parking area (Google Maps link: http://tinyurl.com/2u2yr7t)

Directions: Get to Kloof Nek via Buitengracht and Kloof Nek Rd (from the city) or Camps Bay Drive or Kloof Rd (from Camps Bay), or simply follow the cable car / hiking signs up to Kloof Nek. At the circle, turn onto Tafelberg Rd, skip the first entrance to the parking area and use the second one to park at the highest level (at the SANParks office).

Car guards:  20 Feb:   Vicky Hunter & Andrew Geel

THURSDAY 21 FEBRUARY 2013

JANE HOLDCROFT MORNING HILLS

Anyone keen on doing a hill run on Thursday morning please contact  Jane on 07908 52582 / janeholdcroft@hotmail.co.uk

CELTICS THURSDAY SUMMER TRAIL RUNS

On Thursday 21st February we meet at Newlands Forest for the Contour Path run to start at 18h00. Meet in the parking area at the Newlands forest Parks Board office / helipad / firebase (the parking area is the main parking area off the M3 – 700 metres north of the big M3 / Blue Route intersection with Rhodes Drive / Newlands Avenue, and about 1.2kms south of the southern end of UCT).

We head up and left into Newlands Forest, initially following uphill jeep tracks for the first 2 km’s, before we reach a rusted sign pointing to “Contour Path”. We head up this attractive path which includes some steps and which will lead us up to the contour path. We then turn right heading along the contour path all the way to the turnstile below the blockhouse. As we reach the turnstile, we turn sharp right and head down a single track path, which after about 800 metres links up with the jeep track. This heads steadily down into Newlands Forest again, and back to the start.

Some characteristics of this run:

-          The first 2.5 km’s are mainly steady uphill, with some steps, but all on great quality running surface.

-          Once we reach the contour path, there are some technical rocky and stony sections along the contour path, particularly over the first km of this section. But most of it thereafter is 3-4kms of easy level running all the way to the turnstile below the blockhouse.

-          Some sections of the run take place on boardwalks which can be slippery when wet.  Please take care on this section!

-          When we turn down from the turnstile, the initial 800 metre downhill section is uneven and technical – ankle-roll territory – so watch your footing here and walk if you need to.

-          The rest is easy flowing; smooth running downhill to the finish.

Difficulty grading: 7.5/10

Distance is ±8 km’s.

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. Thanks

This event is one of the highlights of the Cape Town Trail Running calendar.  Because it is a Night Race, a whole new excitement / danger factor comes into play and runners need to be suitably qualified and trail competent in order to have an entry accepted.  But if you are accepted and you do this event then you know you have arrived as a trail runner.

WARRIOR RACE SERIES – STARTING 24 FEBRUARY 2013 (STOKE CITY, MIDRAND)

I am just putting the basics out there because the first race is up north.  This seems to be a national series with events spread out over various provinces over the year.  It appears to be an obstacle race series similar to the Impi Challenge and it is designed for all levels of participation, not just elite athletes (although I am sure we would like to see Charl Souma clean up here as well.  J)  The Western Cape Leg is scheduled for 22 – 23 June 2013.  I (Tim) have an email setting out the details.  If anyone wants it, drop me an email and I will send it through to you.
