acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: OTHER GREAT TRAIL RUNS, ITEMS OF INTEREST AND UPCOMING EVENTS

Hi Everyone

As usual, TONS of information below.  Some interesting new stuff added.  Please just skim through and take whatever grabs your fancy and bin the rest.

Also, please let me know what I am missing.

GENERAL

ENTRIES NEEDED

We are still looking for entries for:

·         Two Oceans Trail Run (Short Route and Long Route)

·         Two Oceans Half Marathon

If you have an entry which you know you are not going to be able to use and would like to pass it on or sell it to recover your costs (not for making a fat profit from it), please contact me (Tim) so I can put you in touch with people who are looking for entries.  Substitutions are allowed until at least mid-Feb but we don’t want to leave things until the last minute.

ENTRIES OFFERED

Although not trail, it seems a shame to let these go to waste:

Laurence Buchanan has an entry to the Peninsula Marathon (17 February 2013) and one for the Two Oceans Ultra (30 March 2013) which he won’t be using.  If anyone is interested in taking these off his hands, please contact him on buchanan.laurence@gmail.com or 0833386865.

WEDNESDAY 30 JANUARY 2013

CRAG TRAIL RUN

Leader:  Tim "Beau Brummell" Bellairs, it is a Sandy Bay Run after all.

Date:  Wednesday 30 January 2013

Time: ready to start running at 17h45 sharp

Location:  Sandy Bay

Route description: Starting from the main / lower Sandy Bay car park in Llandudno, we take the single track SSW to the Sandy Bay Beach. We run a short way along the beach and then turn left up into the bushes (watch out for the thorn bushes in the first section after leaving the beach) and take the single track SW to the Oude Schip isthmus via Umbrella Tree Rock and Shorty’s Cave. Depending on light, tide and time we may cross the isthmus for a quick romp over the island to the wreck of the Harvest Capella (1986). Then it’s straight up the steep path past the Rocket House (1913) to the jeep track Mitchell’s Road / Rocket Road. Turn left on the jeep track and follow it down to the boom at Sandy Bay Nek. Straight down the jeep track in the dunes back to Sandy Bay Beach and the single track back to the car park to rehydrate. Sunset is at 19h50.

Duration and distance:  approx 90 mins, 8 km

Walkers:  Ross Wilson will lead walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Thereafter turn right into Sandy Bay Road, heading generally left and down into Sunset Close. Ignore the first smaller car park on the left and keep going down to the second, bigger car park. SAVE THE RHINO 2 DAY TRAIL RUN – 20 JULY 2013

THE SOUTHERN CROSS 3 DAY TRAIL RUN –  9 AUGUST 2013 - this event is fast becoming one of the premier, most sought after trail events in South Africa.  Highly acclaimed and recommended by top trail runners.

OYSTER CATCHER 2 DAY TRAIL RUN – 28 SEPTEMBER 2013

THE BAT RUN – 23 FEBRUARY 2013

The entries for the Bat Run are now open!

http://www.batrun.co.za/register

This event is one of the highlights of the Cape Town Trail Running calendar.  Because it is a Night Race, a whole new excitement / danger factor comes into play and runners need to be suitably qualified and trail competent in order to have an entry accepted.  But if you are accepted and you do this event then you know you have arrived as a trail runner.

The confirmed date for BatRun 2013 is February 23rd - just a couple nights before the Full Moon!

Entries will open on January 21st via the BATRUN website: www.batrun.co.za.  The first 120 entered runners will be participants if payment is received on time and they are confirmed qualified.  Other entries will go onto the waiting list and will be contacted in order of entry if anything prevents the first 120 from running. Remember, this is an extreme event and runners will be screened for trail running experience prior participation confirmation.

You will receive updates and reminders if you subscribe yourself to the batrun mailling list : http://www.GMailingList.com/batrun (you are already subscribed if you have received this mail twice)

All information for BatRun 2013 will also be posted to the website  a couple days before entries open.  If you have any urgent questions in the meantime, please send an email to info@batrun.co.za???

There will be some specialised training available for this event:  for example, Monday evening hill training will resume on Devils Peak, Platteklip Gorge and Lion’s Head (so that you can learn the routes) commencing 14 January 2013 (watch Friday email this week) and also the CEO of trail running and MATES Chairman, Michael Ohlsson, together with Douglas Rossouw et al will probably organise at least one night training run prior to the event.  Always good fun.

WARRIOR RACE SERIES – STARTING 24 FEBRUARY 2013 (STOKE CITY, MIDRAND)

I am just putting the basics out there because the first race is up north.  This seems to be a national series with events spread out over various provinces over the year.  It appears to be an obstacle race series similar to the Impi Challenge and it is designed for all levels of participation, not just elite athletes (although I am sure we would like to see Charl Souma clean up here as well.  J)  The Western Cape Leg is scheduled for 22 – 23 June 2013.  I (Tim) have an email setting out the details.  If anyone wants it, drop me an email and I will send it through to you.

Competitors originate from all four corners of the globe and will test themselves against the elements. Extreme heat, rugged terrain, rocky-mountains, the famous Sesriem Canyon, culminates in the summiting of two of the highest dunes in the world: Dune 45 and "Big Daddy".

CONSTANTIA VALLEY TRAIL RUN – 14 APRIL 2013

The highly popular and successful Constantia Valley Trail Run returns for its second year, still sponsored by VIVOBAREFOOT.  Limited entries available.  There is a choice between a 21km and 11.5km Trail Race and a 4.5km Family Trail Fun Run.  The runs follow wonderfully scenic routes through the Constantia Vineyards, some of which are completely closed to the public for the rest of the year.  So it really is a rare opportunity to have access to some of these farms.

The event is so well organised one would be forgiven for thinking it is a WPA event but it is not.  Club colours and WPA licences / temporary numbers NOT NECESSARY unless you desperately want to.  Run in whatever you want to (although guys in extremely tight, Borat cycling bibs are discouraged).

I have a very comprehensive race flyer available for anyone who wants it – email me.

To check out all of the details in the meantime, please go to www.cvtrailrun.co.za .  Online entries at www.racetraq.co.za .  Otherwise you may enter at Sportsmans Warehouse (Rondebosch and Tokai) on specific dates specified in the flyer.

AUSSENKEHR DESERT EXTREME TRAIL RUN – 20 TO 22 JUNE 2013 – ENTRIES OPEN

The entries to the multi-day desert extreme event are now open.  50 places only.  Stunning desert trail run along the northern bank of the Orange River i.e. southern Namibia.  Entries close on 20 May 2013 or when all places are filled.

Check out all of the details and book your spot on www.mountainextreme.co.za .  I have a flyer that appears to be resistant to the time honoured Copy and Paste method of communicating information.  If anyone wants it please email me and I will forward it.

Cheers

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 2 FEBRUARY 2013 - PIPE TRACK / KASTEELSPOORT / DAMS / AQUADUCT / MACLEARS / PLATTEKLIP

Hi Everyone

You might pick up some typos and briefness in this email which I hope you can overlook.  After deciding to rest a recent injury niggle for a week I was overcome by the frustration of lack of exercise and so took myself off that that terrible institution called “the gym” (twice).  Here I tried to lift weights to intimidate and impress people 20 – 30 years younger than me and also tried to do abs like a marine on basic training.  Consequently I can now only type with my nose and teeth and have to be wheeled around the office in my chair.

TUESDAY MORNING HILLS / BAT RUN TRAINING

Jane Holdcroft will lead a run at 06h00 tomorrow morning starting from The Saddle car park on Tafelberg Road.  It is about 2.5km past the Lower Cable Station.  The route will be up to The Saddle, middle contour around above Oppelskop and back along the lower contour path.  They will not be going to the Devils Peak summit.  Please let Jane know if you will be attending: 07908 52582 / janeholdcroft@hotmail.co.uk .

SATURDAY 2 FEBRUARY 2013

A huge thank you to Freda and Roger for leading this next one while I take to the road once again at the Lion of Africa Half Marathon.

·         Do not leave valuables in your car.  There have been break-ins in this area.  Leave everything else out of sight.

·         Please be aware that trail running and related activities are inherently riskier and more dangerous than road running.  You are participating in these runs voluntarily and whilst acsis VOB and the organisers of the runs take all reasonable precautions to ensure runner safety, it can never be fully guaranteed.  To this end, acsis VOB and the organisers personally cannot be held liable for claims relating to injuries, disabilities and deaths, inter alia, that may occur during these events.  You are participating entirely at your own risk.  Please ensure that you are medically fit to be participating and make sure that you are properly kitted out for each particular run so as not to place yourself at undue risk.

WEDNESDAY 23 JANUARY 2013

CRAG TRAIL RUN

Leader:  Barry Washkansky

Date:  Wednesday 23 January 2013

Time: ready to start running at 17h45 sharp

Location:  Three Firs route above Camps Bay

Route description: From the start we head UP the concrete road, twisting turning sweating cursing the leader and idiots who devised this approach, until we reach the well-known Pipe Track; then we go south to a point just past Woody Ravine and head UP (again) the slope; at the fork we go right and take the scramble up the Three Firs route, a steep path going up the left-hand side of Slangolie Ravine, which includes some rock scrambling and exposure to heights (be warned!) but perfectly safe, topping out on the Apostles Path near the Saucy Dog (ask the leader!); then it's a northwards undulation as far as Kasteelspoort for the descent to the Pipe Track and down that same cursed concrete road (this time with gravity working for you) back to the cars and a welcome rehydrate. Sunset is at 19h54, moonrise 18h13.

Duration and distance:  approx 100 mins, 6 km

Walkers:  Cheryl Jenks will lead walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

Grading

—   50 % runnable

—   B2 (some rock scrambling, somewhat exposed, path close to edge in places)

—   pack run

Starting point: Theresa Avenue, Rontree Estate (Google Maps link: http://tinyurl.com/32d7zz5)

Directions: From Kloof Nek take Camps Bay Drive M62 down into Camps Bay. Take the THIRD left into Fiskaal and follow this road as it snakes up the mountain. Fiskaal becomes Francolin and eventually Theresa. About 500 m from the start of Theresa you’ll find our starting point at the end of a little side road on the left. Parking in the side road is limited, so please find yourself a spot somewhere along Theresa Ave. I suggest we all park on the sea side of the road, taking care not to obstruct any driveways or bends in the road (solid lines).

 Equipment

—         valid Wild Card/Green Card

—         foul weather gear, if required (long-range forecast predicts clear skies, no rain, 18–28 °C, wind S 25 km/h)

—         water/energy drink/munchies

—         personal medication (if required)

—         something for rehydration after the run

—         warmer/dryer clothing for the rehydrate session

Car guards:  23 Jan: Martin Kleynhans

 SATURDAY 26 JANUARY 2013

 ·        acsis VOB Longer Faster Group Run  - 06h00 – Kloof Nek / Contour Path / Saddle / Newlands Ravine / King’s Blockhouse / Contour Path – see full details on Monday email or on http://vobtrail.blogspot.com/

  ·       Table Mountain Trailers (acsis VOB’s Medium Distance Slower Group) – 06h00  - Table Mountain North Face Traverse:

Route

A straight forward out and back run along the scenic trail across the North Face of Table Mountain to Devil’s Peak and return.

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV in the upper Kloof Nek parking area at the foot of Tafelberg Rd on your left just after you turn off at the circle. Ready to start at 0600

How to get there?  Drive up Kloof Nek Rd. to the traffic circle at the top and follow the signs to the Cable Station. After turning left at the circle onto Tafelberg Rd you will see the parking area on your left,.it has two levels, turn left into the upper level

Terrain and Distance

A good fairly steep climb up to the upper contour path below Kloof Corner ridge then along the undulating single mountain contour trail which runs across the North face overlooking the City.  As opposed to returning via the boring tar road we turn back at Block house ridge and retrace our steps back to above the lower cableway station then descend down to Tafelberg Rd and follow it back to Kloof Nek.

Once up on the contour path there are a few modest gradients and most of it is along a single gravel and rocky trail with occasional precipitous short stretches but the route is easy to follow.  Distance about 12 Kms taking more or less about 2hrs 15min.

Recovery Group

The recovery group will follow the same route but at a more modest pace and will turn back earlier.to give a distance of about 10kms

NAMIB DESERT CHALLENGE – 220 KMS IN 5 DAYS

There are five stages ranging from 28 - 55 kilometers over five days. The stages are arranged to cover the most spectacular terrain. Each stage consists of several legs whereby competitors must pass through a checkpoint. Checkpoints are stationed roughly every 10 - 15km throughout each stage.

Check out all of the details and book your spot on www.mountainextreme.co.za .  I have a flyer that appears to be resistant to the time honoured Copy and Paste method of communicating information.  If anyone wants it please email me and I will forward it.
