OTHER SATURDAY TRAINING RUNS AND EVENTS

SAUCONY MATES / JOURNEY TRAILS MaTT 100 TRAINING RUN

I know it says February but Douglas means September.  I know, I know, don’t try and rationalise, you’ll just drive yourself nuts.  The reasons are contained in the insane ramblings in the prologue to the MATES club email.  Trust me, just substitute September for February and you’ll be fine.  You’ll have 10 -12 hours to discuss it with him on the run.

Saturday 1 ”February” 2012: MaTT 100 training run – Constantia Nek / Table Mountain section

*Where: *Starting and finishing at Constantia Nek.****

*When: *In time to start running at 06H00.****

*Route: *The first section of MaTT 100.****

*Distance: *I think this piece was about 50 km’s last time?****

MOUNTAIN WARRIOR TRAIL RUNNING FESTIVAL – 1 & 2 SEPTEMBER 2012

For those of us who do most of our running on the Peninsula, here is the opportunity to break out and go and hit the Boland mountains and do something completely fresh.  It is organised by Extreme Events (Pieter du Plessis) and is, by all accounts, a magnificent event which caters for most levels of trail runner.

Check out www.mountainwarrior.co.za.

Also at this event will be the launch of The Trail Runners Guide.

This looks like a MUST DO event.  What a way to see in the Spring!!!!!!

ROOIKAT TRAIL RUN

At the McGregor Food and Wine Festival - 1 September 2012

19km and 8km runs - www.quantumadventures.co.za

SUNDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 2012

SAUCONY JOURNEY TRAILS / MATES TRAIL RUN

Again, just substitute September for February.

Sunday 2 “February” 2012:* We thought it might be cool to run from Noordhoek beach and check out a section of the coastline and also the Kommetjie Radar Station. At least Flippie did. It was his idea, so that makes him Dude of the Day.****

*Where: *Noordhoek Beach parking lot. As you come into Noordhoek from the Fish Hoek side, take the last road before ****Chappies Drive****called****Avondrust Circle****. Note that as a circle, it is also the second last road, but maybe consult a map or a GPS if you are unsure. Follow ****Avondrust Circle* ***for about 200 meters or so and take the first right. This takes you all the way down to the beach parking area. That’s us. In the parking lot.****

*When: *In time to start running at 07H30. Please note that there may be a traffic jam on Noordhoek Main drag, as the Camel Run is starting around there somewhere. Don’t kill any runners in your haste, we will wait for you.

*What: *The usual trail running stuff. Don’t bring any water, sea water tastes just fine and we will be crossing several rivers with an interesting blend of horse and human derived ecoli. Delicious! So really, leave your water behind. You won’t regret it. Honest. Also weather dependent kit and all that. Money – there are great breakkie spots not too far away. Or ICE cold beer if you want to rough it in the parking lot. A camera might be cool too, there are some excellent photo opportunities from the Radar Station.****

*Who: *We won’t be going very far or very fast, and I suspect if you can run 10 km’s on the road, you will be fine.****

*Distance: *About 18 km’s.****

*Duration: *We’ll see. Something like 2.5 hours?****

Seeya!

VIVOBAREFOOOT MATROOSBERG TRAIL CHALLENGE

A new date for the VIVOBAREFOOT Matroosberg Trail Challenge has been confirmed.

The race will happen on: Saturday, 29 September 2012.

It has been a challenge to get a suitable date as we didn't want it to clash with some of the popular races (which some of you will participate in). September was chosen as weather conditions were more favourable.

I know most of you want to do this run to get an opportunity to safely run in the snow. With enough snowfall during August, you might still get your wish in September! If we don't get enough snowfall, it will still be a huge challenge to get up into that mountain! Every time you run there, you will get a unique experience.

Please hang on to your entry ticket as it will still be valid for the race.

If you have opted for a refund, you can simply deposit the entry fee directly in to the Running The Cape account:

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2012 - LEG 3 OF TABLE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE (the NASTY Leg)

Hi Everyone

TRAIL SHOP

Tomorrow, I promise.

SATURDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2012 - LEG 3 OF TABLE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE

Hopefully this will be our last CAR ADMIN INTENSIVE RUN for a while.  But please note that there IS car admin involved this week.

START TIME AND PLACE (AND CAR ADMIN)

The run itself will be starting at Constantia Nek car park at 07h00.  But we encourage as many people as possible to meet at Kloof Nek car park (The Finish Point) by 06h30 at the latest to drop cars.  From there we will need a few volunteers to ferry as many runners as possible over to Constantia Nek again to the start.  We will aim to leave Kloof Nek at 06h30 at the latest.  Please note that ultimately you are responsible for organising your own transport but we will try and facilitate as far as possible.

THE ROUTE

We cannot run the first official section of the race through Orangekloof as this is severely restricted access area and no, we are not even going to try.  We will run down the tar (M63 - Hout Bay Road) as far as Longkloof Road and from there we will make our way up to Farriers Way and so find our way to the contour path close to where it reaches the Orangekloof fence.  From there it is official Leg 3 all the way.  Hout Bay Corner, Eureka Traverse (yes, I looked it up on a map), Llandudno Ravine and then Apostle Spine Path to Kasteelspoort, down Kasteels and then Pipe Track to Kloof Nek.

DISTANCE

17km-ish.  There is no short route this week.  However, if there are runners who just want to do a loop from Constantia Nek then they can run with us to Margaret’s Cairn (just before the top of Kasteelspoort) and then turn off to the dams and make your way down the concrete road back to Constantia Nek, obviating the need for car admin.

RUNNING TIME

About 3 – 3.5 hours

DIFFICULTY

Still the toughest of the three legs of the race, despite the addition to Leg 2.  This is a reasonably tough run and one needs to be quite fit for it.  Some big climbs to test your sense of humour.

IMPORTANT NOTES

1.       Please take note of the Car Admin requirements.

2.       Even though this officially the first day of Spring, we can still expect some cold weather in the weeks to come.  Please make sure you have full winter running gear, snacks and drinks for the whole run.

3.       Having said this, drinks are not too crucial if you are happy to drink from mountain streams.  Lots of water on the mountain.

4.       Please do not leave valuables in your cars while you are out running.  Also don’t leave anything else out in open view which might tempt someone to break in.  Even a peak cap or old jersey can trigger criminal interest.

5.       Please be aware that trail running and related activities are inherently riskier and more dangerous than road running.  You are participating in these runs voluntarily and whilst acsis VOB and the organisers of the runs take all reasonable precautions to ensure runner safety, it can never be fully guaranteed.  To this end, acsis VOB and the organisers personally cannot be held liable for claims relating to injuries, disabilities and deaths, inter alia, that may occur during these events.  You are participating entirely at your own risk.  Please ensure that you are medically fit to be participating and make sure that you are properly kitted out for each particular run so as not to place yourself at undue risk.

TABLE MOUNTAIN TRAILERS

Glencairn – Kleinplaas Dam circuit

Route
this is a reasonably easy  circular route around the koppies behind Glencain, Red Hill and passing the Kleinplaas dam.  This week we will run in a clockwise direction.

Rendezvous and Start Time
RV in the parking area on top of Black Hill on the South side of the M6 or Glencain Expressway.

Ready to start at 0715

How to get there?  From the Fish Hoek/Sun Valley side follow the M6 through the traffic lights at the Fish Hoek-Kommetjie intersection and head up Black Hill.  At the crest of the hill look out for the parking area on your right and park close to the big SAN Parks sign at the far end of the parking area.

Terrain and Distance
Reasonably easy undulating bush trails with a few modest hills.  Some sandy stretches and short distances on tar and farm tracks. Distance about 14kms taking us more or less about 2hrs 45m.

Recovery Group

The recovery group will follow a shorter route at a more modest pace

acsis VOB / MATES PUFFER SUPPORT TABLE

A massive thank you to all of those people who turned out to assist at the Puffer Support Table on Saturday morning.  I was convinced that the prospect of terrible weather was going to provide most people with the perfect opportunity to “oversleep”.  This was not the case.  In fact, not only did (nearly) everyone who had committed to being there arrive, but loads of others arrived spontaneously.  This included a host of Table Mountain Trailers runners who arrived despite the fact that their run had been cancelled, some new runners and some prospective runners who all chipped in significantly.  Fantastic commitment and we are very grateful.  MATES were out in force and the CEO was in good voice despite being up the whole night supporting the Tuffer Puffer runners.  People in Simonstown could hear him.  A comedic highlight for the morning was when Mike hauled out the 25 litre container of water for the runners ……….. and it was empty ………. It all leaked out in the back of Paul Rowe’s car.  The look on his face ……….. priceless.  I wonder what Paul’s face looked like when Mike told him?

We were extremely lucky to catch a break in the weather for almost the entire time we were working at the table.  I was also certain that the table was going to be bare of food to a large extent but I couldn’t have been more wrong.  Our cup ran over and there was a massive spread of food.  Another thank you all who brought contributions to the table.  Then to the “auditors” and “herders” who had the extremely rotten job of trying to take down the names of the runners as they came through, I know this is a tough job.  It is dark, it is cold, the names and numbers are all covered up and some of the runners are going really quickly and others are not at their most co-operative best.  But you did extremely well and only a few slipped through unnoticed and these were picked up at the next table.  An outstanding job.  Well done and thank you.

The only big negative of the morning was the theft of Karen Jennings’s hydration pack and cell phone out of Bronwyn’s car on the morning.  It is almost beyond belief that an opportunist would prey on people who are just out doing some good for the community.  We are really sorry Karen.  We can only hope that karma comes around to visit that person soon.

Finally, I want to say something about the acsis VOB Committee members who arrived to support quite unexpectedly.  I must confess to having been feeling a little bit despondent recently.  Then suddenly we had an unprecedented number of committee members there (most not even running afterwards) like Chairman Ian Nixon, Captain Melynda Ward, Dave Waywell and Jeff Shapiro.  Also there was Thomas Andrews who organises the VOB Sunday LSD Road Run.  Di Rixon had called in apologies as she is away and Richard Acheson had seen a dire hangover forecast for Saturday morning and was issued with a doctor’s note to stay at home.  But the fact is that it was fantastic for trail running to have such recognition and acknowledgement from the committee and it was really appreciated.  Thanks guys.  I am feeling fully re-energised after this gesture.

And finally finally, to the Hi-Tec Puffer (and Tuffer Puffer – a stunning performance by the ladies) Runners.  WOW!  Well done………. in such atrocious (yet magnificent conditions).  There must have been times when you were feeling truly miserable.  Well done for pushing on through it and on all of your epic achievements.

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 25 AUGUST 2012 - CAPE POINT RUN

Hi Everyone

SATURDAY 25 AUGUST 2012 - CAPE POINT RUN

WELL!  It looks like it’s going to be quite a morning tomorrow, judging by the weather forecast.  I seriously don’t think Puffer will be postponed so until I hear anything to the contrary I am assuming it will be on and I will be down at the gates of Cape Point setting up the support table at about 05h30.  Quite honestly, I don’t think it is going to be a big problem for us.  Just a bit of wind and rain for a few hours.  It’s a completely different issue for the Puffer runners who will be out in it all day.  There were lots of anxious faces at the registration last night.  J

But if you are concerned about making the trip for nothing, let me assure you that even if there is only one other person there to join me we will run in the park, even if the Puffer is postponed.  When I say WE I mean the Longer Faster Group.  Both the 15km and a makeshift 30km.  The Table Mountain Trailers Run is OFF – CANCELLED.

For those brave souls who are coming purely to help at the table, please assume that the Puffer is ON and I will send out an email if I hear otherwise from the organisers.  I have already emailed them this morning.

If anyone would like to withdraw their offer of assistance, please would you let me know as soon as possible.

I will be sending out a separate email to the table volunteers shortly.  I have tried to take off the names from those who have pulled out already but if you receive the email and don’t want to be there please let me know.

The blue bars show max and min values for precipitation per hour.

SUNDAY 26 AUGUST 2012

SAUCONY JOURNEY TRAILS / MATES TRAIL RUN

Sunday 26 August 2012: This will be the day after Puffer, and nobody is going to be very serious about anything that day. In fact, 99.99% of Puffer runners won’t even show up. Unless we make it interesting, and Flippie had just the plan: We make Claire Dudess of the Day. Claire leads us on a Constantia Nek / Cecila Forest route, and Flippie sets up a seconding point staffed by Puffer runners at Top Gate. ‘Cos the Puffer runners want to be grateful for all the cool stuff that we did for them the day before. And then we end off with a post Puffer picnic at Constantia Nek, where we will get to hear all the blow-by-blows! How about that?

AND REMEMBER: All participants will be included in the August SAUCONY shoe draw! EVEN and ESPECIALLY those who serve at Flippies Restaurant!

Runners:

Where: Claire says we start at Constantia Nek.

When: In time to start running at 09H00. The Puffer runners want to sleep late.

What: Your choice of trail running stuff, weather appropriate kit and all that. Picnic stuff for afterwards, including of course ICE cold beer.

Route: Claire says from Constantia Nek we run along the Contour Path for a bit, and then we go down to Kirstenbosch and somehow finish up at Top Gate where we gorge ourselves on the stuff that Flippie and Friends will have and then we head back to Constantia Nek via Cecilia Formerly Known as a Forrest.

Duration: This run is usually 90 minutes or so. Call it 2 hours.

Distance: About 9 km’s.

Who: Nobody is going very fast here, so if you want to give this trail running thing a shot, this is your day. You just need that basic fitness that will let you run a tar 10km run in about 70 minutes and you are in!

Flippies Refreshment Friends:

If you wanna join Flippie, give him a shout at the below if you want to coordinate arrival times and what to bring. It is SO embarrassing when there is too much beer at a refreshment point.

THURSDAY 23 AUGUST 2012

CELTICS THURSDAY WINTER TRAIL RUNS

Headlamps: It's still dark at the end of our runs - particularly for the more social groups, so it still compulsory to carry a headlamp or torch with you. We hate having to turn people away, but we also don't want to lose people to injuries...

On Thursday 23rd August we meet at Kloof Nek for the run to start at 17h30. We will do the Signal Hill – Lion’s Head circuit.

Meet in the parking area on the left just 100 metres up Tafelberg Road from the traffic circle on Kloof Nek.

The route starts from the Kloof Nek parking area (where the Sanparks info centre is).  Our route will start with a crossing of Kloof road at the Nek (please be careful), head up Signal Hill Road, and then almost immediately we turn left and head along the single track path that follows the spine of Signal Hill to the viewpoint at the end of Signal Hill. We then head back the way we came for a short while, until we get to the foot of Lion’s Head itself, where we turn right (west). We will take a beautiful route back along a scenic path that runs along the lower western slopes of Lion’s Head well above the houses of Bantry Bay and Clifton with superb views of the setting sun.

Difficulty grading: 7/10 (not too much in the way of hills, but some sections where the path is a little uneven underfoot.)

Distance is 9 km’s.

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. Thanks

Mountain Emergencies: The phone number to contact in the event of encountering an emergency on the mountains is Metro control 021-9370300.  This is the correct way of reporting a problem, even for activation of the Skymed helicopter (still the fastest means of getting medical attention to a casualty).  Please program this number into your mobile phone.

OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS

MOUNTAIN WARRIOR TRAIL RUNNING FESTIVAL – 1 & 2 SEPTEMBER 2012

For those of us who do most of our running on the Peninsula, here is the opportunity to break out and go and hit the Boland mountains and do something completely fresh.  It is organised by Extreme Events (Pieter du Plessis) and is, by all accounts, a magnificent event which caters for most levels of trail runner.

I have a comprehensive PDF about the event, not just for those who are interested in participating in the runs but also who might want to get involved at a sponsorship level.  Please let me know if you would like  to check out the attachment and I will send it to you.  Or just go to www.mountainwarrior.co.za .

Also at this event will be the launch of The Trail Runners Guide – flyer below.

This looks like a MUST DO event.  What a way to see in the Spring!!!!!!

THE RHINO RUN – 22 SEPTEMBER 2012 – TOKAI FOREST

This is also an event to raise funds for Rhino conservation.  There will be a choice of two distances (12km and 6km).  We are considering making this the acsis VOB Saturday Run too so that we don’t clash with this event.  So don’t hold back from entering.  The flyer I had didn’t have sufficient info but I will see what I can organise.  However, all details (including route maps) and entries are available on:

http://www.rhinorun.co.za/allyourruninfo/RhinoRunCapeTown.aspx

Please go and check this out and start entering as soon as possible.

We are finalizing accommodation at Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve and will hopefully have more bedding options for you.

Entries will be opening again on Monday 20 August 2012. Look out for more detail coming soon.

So have a look at your schedules and hope to see you there!
