acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 29 DECEMBER 2012 - KLOOF NEK TO BLOCKHOUSE AND BACK VIA DARK GORGE

SATURDAY 29 DECEMBER 2012 - KLOOF NEK TO BLOCKHOUSE AND BACK VIA DARK GORGE

Start Time and Place

We start at 06h00 sharp at the car park at Kloof Nek, just outside the
SANParks Info Centre.

Route

We will make our way straight up Kloof Corner to the contour path.
Bit of a tough start but from there we will have plenty of good
running.  We will take the Lower Contour Path all the way around to
the King's Blockhouse (KBH) via Platteklip Gorge and around Oppelskop.
Once we get to KBH we continue on the contour path around on the
Newlands side until we get to the start of Dark Gorge just before
Newlands Ravine.  We will ascend Dark Gorge to the Saddle.  Dark Gorge
itself has a small amount of exposure to it in the same vein as
Myburgh Waterfall Ravine but it is probably easier than the latter.
We cross the Saddle and drop down to the contour path which we follow
back to Platteklip Gorge.  Down Platteklip to the road, 500m of tar
and then across into Deer Park and straight back down to Kloof Nek.

Distance

Probably just shy of 20km.

Running Time

3.5 hours (ish).

Difficulty

Reasonably tough. Two big climbs; one at the start and then Dark Gorge
to the Saddle.  Other than that it is pretty flat which means that the
pace has a tendency to creep up a bit.  We will try and keep a lid on
that though.

Important Notes

*     Bring lots of water.  The mountain is pretty dry now so don't
rely on finding any out there in the streams.  Also bring some snacks.

*     Make sure you are properly kitted out for the weather conditions.

*     Do Not leave valuables in your car as there have been break ins
in this area in the past.  Leave everything else out of sight.

*     Watch out for snakes on the paths.  Most of this route is single track.

*     We will request regrouping sessions from time to time,
especially as we near KBH as there have been muggings here in the
past.

*     Remember that there is a bit of height exposure in Dark Gorge.
Won't be a problem to anyone with just a normal fear of heights.  I am
a sufferer of this affliction..........no comments, Kirsten!

* Bring ICE cold be'erages for the rehydration session after the run.

Cheers for now.

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 22 DECEMBER 2012 - CONSTANTIA NEK / SKELETON GORGE / BLACKWATER AQUADUCT / CAVEMANS OVERHANG

Hi Everyone

The acsis VOB-organised trail run for tomorrow is ON.  See details below.  Please make sure that you read and comply with the Important Notes at the end.  The Norwegians reckon the temperatures will be much lower tomorrow, not getting above 24 degrees C and there will be a bit of cloud around.  But bring lots of water and slap on the sunblock anyway.

All runners welcome as long as you can keep with the medium pace of the group.  I know that this is horrible but in the name of safety of the majority, runners who are struggling to keep up as we turn up Skeleton Gorge will be asked to turn back rather than risk being lost on the mountain by dropping off the pace later.  Experienced trail runners will, of course, be free to follow under their own steam.  Please note that we take no joy in turning people around.  It just has to be done and fortunately we have not had to do this often.

Having said this, we are not extremely fast but we do go along at a reasonable medium pace and regroup as often as is necessary.

Remember to bring some ICE cold be’erages to rehydrate with afterwards.

Whatever you’re up to, have a great weekend.

Cheers

SATURDAY 22 DECEMBER 2012 - CONSTANTIA NEK / SKELETON GORGE / BLACKWATER AQUADUCT / CAVEMANS OVERHANG

Start Time and Place

06h00 from Constantia Nek car park.

Route

We will take the jeep track and contour path over to Skeleton Gorge.  From there we will take Smuts Track up the gorge to the top and then turn right to the start of the Aquaduct Path.  We run down the Blackwater Stream to the Hely-Hutchinson Dam.  We run past Hely-Hutchinson and Woodhead Dams and on to the Victoria Dam on the jeep track.  At Victoria Dam we turn right onto the single track as if going to Hole-in-the-Wall but will keep right and traverse across to the Caveman's Overhang and on past below Hole-in-the-Wall to the De Villiers Dam.  From there we will make our way back down to Constantia Nek via jeep track and short cuts.

Distance

Probably not much more than about 15km but could be quite slow going.

Running Time

3 - 3.5 hours

Difficulty

Quite a tough one with some biggish climbing to start with.  The highest point will be the Aquaduct turn so it's flattish and downhill from there although the section from Victoria Dam to De Villiers Dam is very technical and will be slow going.

Important Notes

·         It's getting hot out there so make sure you carry lots of water and some energy snacks.

·         Having said that, also be prepared for swift changes in weather and have something warm with you in case the wind picks up.  It can get cold in the breeze.

·         Take precautions against the sun (sunblock and hat).

·         Watch the roads and paths for snakes.  There have been a number of interesting sightings recently.

·         Bring some ICE cold be'erages to rehydrate afterwards.

Cheers

THURSDAY 13 DECEMBER 2012

CELTICS THURSDAY SUMMER TRAIL RUNS

On Thursday 13th December we meet at Kloof Nek for the run to start at 18h00. We will do the Deer Park Route.

The route starts from the Kloof Nek parking area (where the Sanparks info centre is.) Meet in the parking area on the left just 100 metres up Tafelberg Road from the traffic circle on Kloof Nek.

It heads in the direction of Devil’s Peak taking in the humps and hills of Deer Park. It then climbs steadily to Dead Man’s Tree on Tafelberg Road and heads back along Tafelberg Road past the base of Platterklip and Lower Cableway back down to the start.

Distance: +/- 9km.

Great for ‘night’ running and if it is a clear night, the views from Tafelberg road of Table Mountain on the one side and the city on the other as you run back to your cars will be fantastic!

NB: PLEASE ALL DO YOUR BEST TO STAY IN YOUR GROUPS – MOST PARTICULARLY DO NOT RUN AHEAD OF YOUR GROUP LEADER. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. Thanks

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING: SATURDAY 15 DECEMBER 2012 - A SHORT LOOP AROUND SILVERMINE WEST AND AN INFORMAL PICNIC / SWIM AT THE DAM

Hi All

The festive season is upon us and many people will be disappearing on holiday (if they haven’t left already).  This doesn’t mean that this is our last run for the year although I think the Table Mountain Trailers will be taking a break after this coming weekend.  The Longer Faster Group will continue as usual over the holidays.

It has also long been a custom at acsis VOB to visit Noordhoek Peak around this time of year.  There used to be an annual event where everyone (including lots of roadies) ran from Seamus Daly’s house in Constantia to Noordhoek Peak and back and then abuse his hospitality.  But since Seamus moved to Noordhoek we have been looking at different ways of hosting it.  We would like to keep this tradition alive in some form and we have been experimenting with various formats without impacting too much on any one party.  Jane Holdcroft very kindly hosted it last year (Feb this year, actually) and this year we thought that we would try another version.  So what is set out below is the new experimental format.  We hope to coax Seamus and some of the previous participants out of hiding so that they will join us.

SATURDAY 15 DECEMBER 2012

Longer Faster Group: A Loop Around Silvermine West and an Informal Picnic / Swim At The Dam

Start Time and Place

Main Group:  07h15 (the gates only open at 07h00) from the car park at the Dam in Silvermine West (North).  This is the side of Silvermine on the City side of Ou Kaapseweg.  There is an entry fee (I think it is about R35 but I will confirm later) but a Wild Card / Activity Card gets you in free.

Dog-Friendly Group:  Jane Holdcroft will be leading a longer run starting at 06h00 from outside the boom at the entrance to Silvermine West.  This run will be dog-friendly but is also for those wanting a longer run and are happy running with dogs.  But please note that this is a pretty strong group and there are very specific requirements regarding dogs that participate.  You must contact Jane about your dog’s attendance (or your own, if you are in any doubt) in advance.  07908 52582 / janeholdcroft@hotmail.co.uk .

Route

Main Group:  We will head down the tar road to the mountain biker car park from where we will head up Steenberg Ridge and run up towards the Fire Lookout Hut below Elephants Eye.  From there we will head up to the stone highway and the wooden lookout deck at the top of Blackburn Ravine.  Then we take the Panorama Path to Noordhoek Peak.  From there it is over to Crassula Ridge and we make our way back towards the Dam but from here we have several add on options.  We can turn right on our way down towards the Dam and take what I presume the MATES runners refer to as Zappy and even add Zooty onto it.  Apparently named because of the high speed at which they can be run (and wiped out on).  Each of the two paths has an escape path which leads over to the River Walk which will take us back to the Dams.  We will finalise the actual route on the day depending on weather conditions but there are lots of easy short cuts for even the laziest runner which will take you back to the Dam once we hit Crassula Ridge.

Dog Friendly Group:  Will start on Ou Kaapseweg at the boom at the entrance to the park at 06h00 and Jane will surprise you with a route which I am certain will challenge you sufficiently and probably trigger a Toirette’s episode in Sandra.

Distance

Main Group:      10 or 11km if the weather is hot and 15km if the weather is lousy.

Dog-Friendly Group:       15 -20km

Running Time

Main Group:  1.5 – 2 hours

Dog-Friendly Group:  Probably 2.5 – 3 hours.

Important Notes

·         The whole idea is to make this a shorter run, not necessarily slower, and that we spend a little time afterwards relaxing at the Dam, swimming (if the weather is good) and talking a bit of nonsense with a be’erage in hand and a snack or two (on a “bring your own” basis).  So try and stick around for a short while afterwards and enjoy the atmosphere and fine conversation.

·         Bring a costume and towel, Bentley Belt and rubber ducky for a swim in the Dam.

·         Please note the later starting time (for the main group) as the gates to the Park only open at 07h00.  There is an entry fee (quantum to be confirmed later) although a Wild Card gets you in free.  Bring a tip for the car guard as well.

·         For the 06h00 dog-friendly group an appropriate Wild Card is compulsory for dog-owners.

·         Remember sunblock and hat / cap.

·         Please wear appropriate running gear for the weather conditions and carry sufficient water and snacks to see you through the run.

Table Mountain Trailers: Rhodes Memorial

Route

A scenic circular route around this beautiful nature reserve

Rendezvous and Start Time

RV at 0630 in the parking area next to Rhodes Memorial.   If the gates are closed then we will RV in the Old Zoo parking area just to the right of the gate leading up to the memorial

How to get there?  From the M3 take the Rhodes Memorial turn off and drive through the wooden gates up the hill and to the end next to the memorial.

Terrain and Distance

Depends on where we actually start!   But it will include a few hills, undulating single trail bush tracks and rugged boulder strewn trails. Distance more or less approximately about 11kms taking in the region of roughly about 2hrs 30m.

Recovery Group

The recovery group will follow a shorter route at a more modest pace

Post Run Picnic Breakfast

It is our custom on our last run of the year to have a casual al-fresco picnic breakfast after the run. So bring tequila, rum & coke, muffins, fruit, tea, coffee, sandwiches or whatever suits you.

FEEDBACK FROM LAST SATURDAY

Going to have to give this a miss this week.  I am a little under pressure from being out of the office yesterday.  Sorry about that.

Have a great week.

Cheers

Tim
