CRAG TRAIL RUN
This week’s run is dedicated to the memory of Winston Wilson, CRAG/CWAG stalwart, friend and mentor to many of us, and lover of the trails and mountains, who passed away recently; the running and walking routes have been co-ordinated to meet at a point for a short commemoration, and all who knew Winston are welcome — and urged — to join either group; here then are the details for this week:
************************************************************************************************
Leader: Stanimir Sokolinski
Date: Wednesday 26 Oct 2011
Time: ready to start running at 17h45 sharp
Location: eastern slopes of Table Mountain
Route description: From the Constantia Nek parking area, we run along the jeep track and past the art gallery. At the next boom gate, we take the single track down to the right that runs alongside Rhodes Avenue, all the way to the main entrance of Cecilia Forest. At red-arrow-rock, we turn sharply left and begin our ascent on the new path above the indigenous parking area, and then up again until we reach the forester’s hut. We continue up another short stretch of single track past the water reservoir, and stop for a rest on the jeep track at the area of stone statues. This zigzag single track takes us all the way up to the top, through some desert and then some gum trees, where we stop for another rest at the junction. Up the steps to the cement jeep track and then up along a short stretch of this road, we then find the single track/steps that leads us directly back to the parking at Constantia Nek. Sunset is at 19h09.
Duration and distance: approx 75 mins, 9,2 km
Walkers: Laurence van Blerck will lead walkers on a BRISK walk, leaving from the same place at the same time, for the same approximate duration. Walkers are advised to bring the appropriate equipment (see below).

CELTICS SUMMER TRAIL RUN
This Thursday 27th October we meet at Newlands Forest for the Contour Path run to start at 17h45.
Meet in the parking area at the Newlands forest Parks Board office / helipad / firebase (the parking area is the main parking area off the M3 – 700 metres north of the big M3 / Blue Route intersection with Rhodes Drive / Newlands Avenue, and about 1.2kms south of the southern end of UCT).
The Route
We head up and left into Newlands Forest, initially following uphill jeep tracks for the first 2 km’s, before we reach a rusted sign pointing to “Contour Path”. We head up this attractive path which includes some steps and which will lead us up to the contour path. We then turn right heading along the contour path all the way to the turn-style below the blockhouse. As we reach the turn-style, we turn sharp right and head down a single track path, which after about 800 metres links up with the jeep track. This heads steadily down into Newlands Forest again, and back to the start.
Some characteristics of this run:
- The first 2.5 km’s are mainly steady uphill, with some steps, but all on great quality running surface.
- Once we reach the contour path, there are some technical rocky and stony sections along the contour path, particularly over the first km of this section. But most of it thereafter is 3-4kms of easy level running all the way to the turn-style below the blockhouse.
- When we turn down from the turn-style, the initial 800 meter downhill section is uneven and technical – ankle-roll territory – so watch your footing here and walk if you need to.
- The rest is easy flowing; smooth running downhill to the finish.
