acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING & WALKING: SATURDAY 29 JANUARY 2011 - MUIZENBERG MOUNTAINS FROM BOYES DRIVE

vob logo with man.jpg

trail running header header.jpg

Hi All

The emails are getting later and later.  Must be all the excitement leading up to the J&B Met this weekend (no plug intended but I am a whisky drinker and my birthday is coming up soon.......).

Now for those of you waiting for my annual rant about the Met, you are going to be disappointed.  With a Rixon as our club captain and a Snaith as a member and regular runner at acsis VOB I think its wiser that I keep my yap shut.  It must be understood that these petty ravings were always poking fun at myself rather than at the event.  They are not designed to have a go at horse-racing but are largely to tease the socialites who swan their pretty little selves around on the day.  My particular grievance is that people use it as an excuse not to trail run in the morning because they "need to get ready for the Met" !  Incomprehensible !  In addition, I am just bitter because of my past spectacular failures at achieving socialitedom.  I have tried going to this event several times.  It's normally the second hottest day of the year (the hottest being reserved for the Sundowner 10km race in December) and attending in a tux on a boiling hot day has most men coming across rather more as sweaty, uncomfortable waiters than suave, super-cool people of importance.  The excitement and heat cause one to gulp down litres of alcoholic beverages far too quickly and my unconscious form is normally found slumped in a chair, snoring gently in a shady corner many hours before the main race even starts.  Invariably one also receives a mandatory parking fine as a parting gift from the City of Cape Town.  So.....careful where you park.....you are being watched by the ladies and gentlemen in blue.

All jokes aside, go for it, enjoy the Met.  But come for a soul-recharging run in the mountains beforehand and rather spend a little bit less time "getting ready".  I think most people are more interested in how they look rather than how you look (oooopss there's that bitterness again).

WEDNESDAY INFORMAL TRAIL RUN IN CITY BOWL AREA - 26 JANUARY 2011

There will be a few trustee regulars heading out from the car park at Kloof Nek on Wednesday afternoon straight after work.  This is still in the experimental stage SO PLEASE RSVP  TO ME  IF YOU PLAN ON ATTENDING.  We just want to get an idea of how many there will be.

Start Time:  Ready to run at 17h15.

Route to be decided on the day but will be 8 - 10kms - not too tough.  Gentle pace.

SATURDAY 29 JANUARY 2011 - SAME ROUTE AS THE FIRST ASCENT MUIZENBERG MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE

This Saturday Jane will be leading a run which is essentially the same route as the race (in heading above) which was held in December 2010.

Start Time and Place

In time to start at 06h30 on Boyes Drive at the parking area marked for Steenberg Plateau.  See below.  Google Earth co-ordinates are 340536.15 S & 182732.74 E.  Ignore the note on the map about walking up from Zandvlei and cars not being allowed at the start on Boyes Drive as this is the map from the actual event.  Ours is just a social run.......remember.  Because you must have energy for the Met afterwards (doh!).

The Route

Trail Runs

There is just one Trail Run Option this week (not a long and a short, just a medium).  The map says it all.  I have never run it so can't describe it.  By all accounts it is a steep climb followed by lots of runnable stuff and then a steep descent.  So, basically like just about any trail run, really.

Walk / Run Options

From Peter Rogers: "This coming Saturday 29 January we will be back into the mountains above Muizenberg.   Sandy will be leading us for a meander around Muizenberg Peak.  We meet in the little grassy park on the mountain side of the main road immediately after you pass through the traffic lights [just in front of the bowling green].   Parking can be either at the shopping centre parking area on the left just before you get to the lights, or up the road to the right alongside the park."
Start time at 0630 sharp.  See http://vobtrailwrg.blogspot.com/ .
Brisk Walk

To be confirmed on Friday.

Trail Distance

About 12km

Running Time

Between 2 and 2.5 hours

Difficulty

Reasonably tough but beautiful.

Important Notes
  1. Please watch the weather report and come appropriately attired (no tuxedos) and prepared.
  2. Please carry your own water.  Don't rely on there being water on the mountain and there is very little shade on this route.
  3. Apply sunblock liberally and where a cap / hat.
  4. Watch out for snakes on the paths (or let Jane run in the front).
  5. Sign the register before setting out.
  6. There will be a sweep of the route (Tim) with a first aid kit.  Please don't fall.
  7. Have fun.

acsis TRAIL RUNNING & WALKING: SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 2011 - NOORDHOEK BEACH / CHAPMANS PEAK / NOORDHOEK PEAK AND BACK

vob logo with man.jpg

trail running header header.jpg

Hi All

Apologies for the late email today.  The holidays are clearly over but the upside is that the work days are nice and busy.  That does impact on Trail email time though.

Feedback

Last Saturday saw a great turn-out, despite the fact that the Hohenort 15km road race was being run.  All groups had excellent attendances and the poor guy at the Silvermine gate didn't know which way to turn as the cars queued impatiently to get in.

I was delighted to see the return of some of the return of some of the faces who have been missing for far too long.  These include Bronwyn Pithey who returns after a very long lay-off after she did terrible, terrible things to an ankle last year.  Bronwyn seems to have picked up where she left off, running strongly although with a little more caution on the technical downhills.......lessons well learnt.  Liz Robertson who returns after unsuccessfully trying to sort out tight, painful calves.  I presume that pain-killers are now being employed prior to the next trip to the specialist.  Sandra "Sailing" Filby returns after seeing her straight A's daughter through matric, thereby ensuring that Sandra will be able to retire in the distant future in a manner to which she is going to make very sure she becomes accustomed.  Sandra did not let us down on the day: two spectacular falls (one of which was witnessed by myself), some language that would make a sailor blush, a social blunder (which will go to the grave with me, Sandra.....don't worry) and ultimately heat exhaustion (and the effects thereof).....fantastic stuff.  And Viv and Morrie are back to join Fay and the Brisk Walkers.  And of course, welcome back everyone else.

It really did feel like the good ol' days last Saturday and we had some of the usual hilarious conversation going at the back of the pack.  But one cannot live on good ol' days alone and I was also excited to see a sprinkling of eager new faces.  On that point, can we just ask that if you are attending one of these runs for the first time, please come and say hi to me, Jane or Peter or whichever loudmouth is making the announcements.  It's great to have the new faces there and we would like to make you feel welcome (without embarrassing you too much).

SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 2011 - NOORDHOEK BEACH / CHAPMANS PEAK / NOORDHOEK PEAK AND BACK (A NEW ROUTE)

Start Time and Place

Noordhoek Beach car park ready for a 06h30 start.  If you don't know where that is then hang your head in shame and then email me for a detailed description.

Routes

Long Route:    Jane is leading this run again and she is doing some serious Bat Run training so you can expect some big hills.  Starting at the beach you will take in a little bit of tar road up to the start of the path on Chapmans Peak Drive just to the west of Ohio Farm.  For the Argus Cycle Tour riders amongst you I think this is somewhere near the top of Little Chappies.  Head up to the nek between Chapmans Peak and Noordhoek Peak.  Turn left and head up to the summit of Chappies and then back down to the nek again.  Then it's up in the other direction to Noordhoek Peak (a beast of a climb) and back.  By this stage I don't think you'll care what the rest of the route is as long as its the shortest route back to the cars.  I suspect that it will be the same way you went out.

Short Route:    We (i.e me) are going to stay flexible on this one and we will make a call on the day.  My ever-unpredictable mood currently favours going with the long route group up Chapmans Peak and back (i.e. avoiding the Noordhoek Peak leg).  However, there is always the option of doing a beach run to Long Beach and back.  "We" can decide on the morning depending on the weather conditions, the tides and the size of my hangover.

Walk / Run Route:    These groups will be doing the beach route option mentioned above.  See full details from Peter on http://vobtrailwrg.blogspot.com/.

Brisk Walking Group:    To be confirmed.

Distances

Long Route:    15km max but we haven't measured the distance.  Might be shorter but it will be a solid workout.

Short Route:    10 - 12km but far less hardcore.

Walk / Run:    10km

Brisk Walk:    TBC

Running Times

Long Route:    Jane reckons about 2 hours (but be prepared to be flexible on that........)

Short Route:    1.5 - 2 hours.

Walk / Run:    1.25 - 1.5 hours.

Brisk Walk:    TBC

Difficulty

Long Route:    Tough

Short Route:    Moderate to tough if heading up Chappies.  Easy to moderate if we do the beach option.

Walk / Run:    Peter's note: "High tide is at 04h55 that morning and with low tide at 11h10 we will have firm damp sand to run on.  Ideal course to stretch the legs and
for those a little queasy about heights, a chance to relax!"

Important Notes
  1. For those heading into the mountains, please watch the weather forecast and dress appropriately to the weather conditions; especially the long route.  Jane will turn you away if she feels you are placing yourself and others in danger because you are not properly equipped for the run.
  2. Please carry your own water and energy snacks.  Don't rely on mountain streams at this time of year.
  3. Keep an eye out for snakes on the paths.  Gregg Sneddon has seen some whopping great puffies in this region......see photo on acsis VOB Trail Facebook page (link via blog http://vobtrail.blogspot.com/).
  4. Sunscreen and a peak are always a good idea at this time of year.
  5. Sign the register before setting out.
  6. Have fun.  This is not a race.  On that note, if anyone is keen for a little breakfast at the Food Barn or Cafe Roux at the Noordhoek Farm Village, let me know.

AND FINALLY: - WEDNESDAY EVENING INFORMAL RUNS AROUND THE CITY BOWL

Some of you may remember that we used to have informal trail runs on Wednesday evenings along the routes around the City Bowl.  This was never meant to be a competition with CRAG but is intended for people who can't make it to the CRAG runs because of time constraints and their work being situated in Town.  Also, come winter time, it provides a nice little stretch of the legs before dark for those who, like myself, are utterly incapable of running with a head torch.  Bronwyn, myself, Karen and Sandra are keen on resurrecting these runs from next week.

We will send the details out each Monday with this email.  But what you need to understand if you chose to participate in these runs is that they are very informal and by and large are intended for the middle of the pack runner.  Unlike the Celtics and CRAG runs, this is usually a handful of people heading out for a trot in the mountains.  Those expecting to do a very fast run will in all likelihood be disappointed and frustrated.  It will be a pack run with regrouping stops from time to time.

Distances will be around 10km and will usually take us around 90 minutes.

That's it for now.  Have a great week Everyone.

Cheers

Good morning Everyone

SATURDAY 15 JANUARY 2011: SILVERMINE WEST (SAME SIDE AS THE DAM)

The Runs, Run / Walks and Brisk Walk are all ON for tomorrow.  Fay has confirmed that she will be there for Walkers but if there are no other takers then she will join in with a Walk / Run Group.

All Groups to meet at the Mountain Biking Car Park in Silvermine West as soon as possible after 07h00 for a 07h15 start.  The relevant car park is located to the right of the main road that leads from the Silvermine Gate (Gate 1) to the Dam.  It is a few hundred metres before the main Dam Car Park.

Remember:
  1. To bring either cash (R20/R25) for the entry fee to Silvermine or your newly renewed Wild Card plus a tip for the car guard;
  2. Also, there is no cell phone reception at the start.  So make sure you don't oversleep because you won't be able to call me to tell me you're running late.  There is some reception further up in Silvermine and in other areas we will be running so it is definitely worth carrying a phone for safety.

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING & WALKING: - SATURDAY 15 JANUARY 2011 -

vob logo with man.jpg

trail running header header.jpg

Hi All

Report Back

As you will be aware there was no trail run last weekend and many of our usual runners, myself included, were out doing the Bay to Bay.  Under normal circumstances I would not give feedback on a road race as that is not the purpose of email.  However, I have been challenged to give an explanation for my unscheduled, tactical withdrawal from the race in Hout Bay after previously heaping scorn on the relay runners.  The truth is, yes, I did bail but (in my own mind) I have a very good excuse (as usual):

At the 4km mark, I was happily trotting along talking nonsense and lying about my previous results for the Bay to Bay when I suddenly found my nose just centimetres from the road and closing quickly on the tar.  The leading foot had snagged on one of those *&^$#$%%$ cats-eyes.  Being accustomed to stumbling on trail runs I managed to whip my trailing leg through in time in time to prevent me from claiming a road Sailing Sandra but unfortunately there was also a price to be paid for not taking the fall.  A sharp pain in the glute/hamstring area which got progressively worse and so by the time I reach the 15km mark in Hout Bay I decided that I would have to just face the consequences of opening my big, fat, stupid mouth about the 15km runners not being real runners etc.  So that's my excuse !  Nothing a little Myprodol and ice can't fix.......I hope.

But I saw many trail runners out there on Sunday, most of whom really seemed to be enjoying a bit of tar for a change.  And Rod Prodgers seems to be having a similar start to the year as myself as he was prevented from running by a cold but was nevertheless out there to support (and offer me a lift back to the start...thanks Rod).  I noticed a particularly high spirited Butler/Rust/Pikker bus coming in and only discovered later that it was in fact Jayde's birthday.  Happy Birthday for yesterday Jayde.

SATURDAY 15 JANUARY 2011 - SILVERMINE WEST (SAME SIDE AS THE DAM)

Whilst there is another popular road race on this coming weekend (the Hohenort 15km), we are heading back out onto the trails for those who want to get back into the mountains.

Start Times and Place

As close as possible to 07h15 as we can get.  Unfortunately the Silvermine gate only opens at 07h00 so we can't get off to our normal 06h30 start.  We start at the Mountain Bike Car Park.  This is located to the right of the road leading up to the dam, a few hundred metres before the main dam car park.

The Routes

Main, Long Route Group which Jane Holdcroft will be leading

Silvermine West (same side as the Dam), start MTB car park to Elephants Eye, down to level 5 contour along single track (Puffer route) to saddle - up to Manganese track and along, up Blackburn ravine back to start via jeep track.

Short Route

Silvermine West (same side as the Dam), start MTB car park to Elephants Eye.  From there we will return to the circular jeep track in Silvermine and run up towards Noordhoek Peak but will turn left onto the Crassula Ridge / Hillcrest Path, returning to the road on the southern side of Noordhoek Peak and take some single track back around to the car park.  Either that route or we will joining in with Peter Rogers' Walk / Run Group Route (see http://vobtrailwrg.blogspot.com/ ) as they are starting at the same time and place as us.

Walk Run Group

From parking area down to river and up towards dam. Then left up the gravel track to the Noordhoek lookout site, around the circular path to the lookout platform at top of Blackburn Ravine then across to the Elephants Eye lookout then return to the cars via Steenberg Ridge.

Walking Group

We await confirmation from Fay as to whether the Walkers are heading out.  We will confirm on Friday.

Distances and Running Times
Long Route:    About 15km in about 2 hours

Short Route:   About 10km in about 2 hours (gentler pace)

Walk Run:      About 9km in about 2 hours.

Walk:             About 9km in about 3 hours (to be confirmed)

Difficulty

Moderate.  Long and Short Route is mainly single track with some challenging hills mainly on the Long Route (Blackburn Ravine).

Important Points
  1. We are fairly certain that the NEW Wild Cards have kicked in now so if you don't fancy paying the R20 Entrance Fee, please make sure you pop into a SANParks Office this week or renew your Card online.
  2. Please make sure you watch the weather report and dress appropriately for the weather conditions.  We will confirm the forecast on Friday.
  3. Please carry enough water and energy snacks.  At this time of year you cannot rely on there being drinkable water in the stream beds en route and there are no taps.  There is very little shade on these routes.
  4. Apply sunblock liberally before setting out and remember a hat or peak cap.
  5. Keep a wary eye out for snakes on the paths (especially the front-runners).
  6. If its hot, bring the cozzie and towel for a swim in the dam afterwards.
  7. Sign the attendance register before starting.
  8. Have fun, this is not a race.
That's it for now.

Have a great week Everyone.

Cheers

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING & WALKING: FRIDAY WRAP UP

vob logo with man.jpg

trail running option 2 header.jpg

Hi All

This just confirmation that NO informal Trail Runs have been brought to my attention for this coming Saturday, 8 January 2011.  The focus seems to be on the Bay to Bay 30km (or 2 x 15km) road race on Sunday.

But we will be back in full force next weekend with a full schedule of Runs, Walk/Runs and Walks.  Full details will be published by email, on the blog and Facebook on Monday 10 January 2011.

But speaking of that "Full Schedule", the diligent readers among you (e.g. Seamus) will have picked up certain errata in the Schedule of Runs for January and February 2011.  We got our Easts and Wests a little confused so the corrections are:

15 January will take place in Silvermine West (the side where the Dam is).

12 February will take place in Silvermine East i.e. the other side of Ou Kaapseweg.

LOOKING FOR A PARTNER FOR SPUR ADVENTURE CHALLENGE - 16 JANUARY 2011

Giulia Criscuolo is looking for a partner for this event.  I couldn't find any way of phrasing the request better than she has, so I quote:

"I am looking for a team mate (relatively fit and eager to have some fun) to do the SPUR Adventure challenge on Jan 16th – see advert here below and I was wondering if it would at all be possible to add this to your next outgoing e-mail?

Team mate needs to have done some trail running and mountain biking, but average ability is fine (I am a SLOW mountain biker) – the aim is to ENJOY and really not be worried about speed. I have done a few of these events and it really is a lot of fun.

Contact me at g@spiralconnect.za.net."

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING & WALKING: JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2011 SCHEDULE WITH A KIND TOUCH OF MATES

vob logo with man.jpg

trail running header header.jpg

Hi All

As promised, here are the proposed routes for the rest of January and February 2011.

Full credit for these must be given to Jane Holdcroft who will, to a large extent, be leading these runs (or the Long Route Groups anyway). For most of these, I will also be present to either assist or to take a Short Route Group. I am very grateful to Jane for stepping in to take runs now. This frees me up to do some of the very fine, upcoming road events (disgraceful, I know, but I also love road running) in an effort to try and rediscover some of the "speed" from the days of yore and lose some weight (which I blame entirely on trail running) in the process (not that I need to, naturally). Please bear in mind that these may change if circumstances arise which necessitate amendments to the schedule (e.g. injuries , family emergencies etc) but we will do our best to stick to this schedule:

These are the basic route descriptions. Full details will follow closer to the time:

15th January 2011

Silvermine West (same side as the Dam), start MTB car park to Elephants Eye, down to level 5 contour along single track (Puffer route) to saddle - up to Manganese track and along, up Blackburn ravine back to start via jeep track.

22nd January 2011

Noordhoek Beach up to Chapmans Peak, on to Noordhoek peak and back.

29th January 2011

First Ascent Muizenberg Mountain Challenge route. An opportunity to do the route under non-race conditions.

5th February 2011

Bottom of Platteklip to contour path along & up and over Devils Peak saddle descending Newlands Ravine - round Devils Peak to the start via contour path & Kings Blockhouse.

12th February 2011

Silvermine East (R5 car park side) round to Amphitheatre along ridge to Nelly's pool and back via multi-peaks.

19th February 2011

Bat Run. Jane will be involved in Bat Run on 19 February and many runners will be involved in the Peninsula Marathon on 20 February. So there may not be a formal VOB Trail Run on 19 February, although informal runs are a possibility.

26th February 2011

Constantia Nek to Maclears Beacon and back via Echo valley or Valley of Isolation (Red Gods).

5th March 2010

Silvermine West start MTB car park along river walk, left to Crassula ridge, Noordhoek Peak, panoramic route to Hout Bay look out, back to start or back to start via mast.

Cheers

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING AND WALKING: SATURDAY 8 JANUARY 2011 - TAKING A BREAK

vob logo with man.jpg

Hi Everyone

And we're back.  Welcome to 2011 trail running at acsis VOB.

For those of you who have still not decided on a club to join (if any) or to those existing VOB runners who have not yet renewed their membership I have attached the required forms for you to consider (1 x ASA Form + 1 x acsis VOB Form).  It's so easy to join:

1.    Fill out and sign both forms; then
2.    Pay online (banking details on the VOB form) if at all possible and print out proof of payment; then
3.    Fax or email the two forms and proof of payment to the club secretary, Charlotte Kettlewell on (021) 761 8887 or vobsec@mweb.co.za , then
4.    Pop through to the clubhouse on any Tuesday or Thursday evening between 17h30 and 18h15 to collect your 2011 race number.

Report Back - acsis VOB Chairman's Run

Sunday 2 January 2011 saw the very first running of the trail version of the annual acsis VOB Chairman's Run from the VOB Clubhouse in Constantia to the picnic site on Signal Hill.  25km almost exclusively on single track.  It was a fantastic run with a turnout that far exceeded expectation, bearing in mind the time of year, the early start and the distance.  Nice to see some old faces (meant as in people who have run with us for a long time, not meaning as in the insulting way) there as well as some new faces (about time too, for some of them.......you know who you are).

Fortunately for us the weather was nice and cool.  Had it been a hot day then things could have gone poorly for some, including myself, who don't deal well with heat.  This is because we were out there for 5 hours, which was quite a bit longer than expected.  At least we know now for next year.

We naturally split into two pace groups and I must say that the group I ran in, being the slightly slow of the two, had a fantastic atmosphere.  Thank you to everyone in the group for the wonderful company along the way and also for regrouping perfectly to make sure we stayed together.  What a pleasure to run with you guys.

Despite the wet and slightly slippery conditions in some places, I have not been made aware of any serious tumbles.  The worst injuries were the odd scraped shin, some nasty chafing from wet clothes and Mark Pikker's borderline hypothermia from having to wait so long in the cold wind on Signal Hill for the rest of us to finish.

In short, the event was a huge success.

The Thank You's

1.    Thank you to Jane & Adam and Ludevine & Paul for sharing their coffee and wonderful snacks at the finish as everyone else had given up on us and gone home.

2.    This, of course, is with the exception of Lynette Bazely who waited to see if we were okay and helped with lifts back to the club.  Thank you very much for your
       concern, Lynette.  Very much appreciated.

3.    Thank you to Jana B for keeping me company in my sweeping role and for making sure I didn't try and run at a stupid pace.

4.    Thank you to everyone who came along to run.  You are now part of club history for being part of the first Chairman's Run (Trail Version).

5.    And finally, a huge thank you to everyone who helped with lifts.  It could have been a very cold, miserable end to the run without your help.

SATURDAY 8 JANUARY 2011 - TAKING A BREAK

After some consideration, we have decided that there will be no OFFICIAL acsis VOB Trail Run this coming Saturday.  This is largely because of the running of the Bay to Bay on Sunday 9 January 2011.  Most of us will be participating in that race.  As it is 30km, it makes sense to conserve energy the day before.

HOWEVER, there may well be some informal arrangements that arise during the week and if this is the case, we will let you know all of the details on Friday.

acsis VOB Trail Run Schedule for January and February 2011.

This schedule will be sent out during the course of this week.  So you are forewarned of an extra trail email for this week.

Special request from Sonia Beard

"Does anyone know of a running couple about to / currently sailing to St Helena ?  If so, Sonia Beard (082 789 8806 / soniab@polka.co.za) would be very grateful if you can send her the name/s and if possible, contact details for these people.  Thanx so much. (She will tell you the reason when she hears from you!)"

That's it for now.

Cheers
