acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING AND WALKING: FAREWELL TO 2010

Hi Everyone

This will be our last email for 2010 as I suspect that I am going to be emailing mostly Out of Office Assistants now anyway....... I will also be on leave between Christmas and New Year.

Feedback

What a superb long weekend that was, filled with stunning trail running and great company !

Firstly, Mike Ohlsson took what I think was the first official MATES trail run on Thursday morning which saw us edging along little cliffs, scurrying up Agatha's Gully with rocks bouncing down on our heads and then up a challenging little scramble with Mike's well aimed insults bouncing down on our heads, then passed Camel Rock, the Bailiff's Cottage, Ash Valley, an empty Hely-Hutchinson Dam and then back to Constantia Nek via Cecilia Ridge and Waterfall.  A thoroughly enjoyable route, most of which I didn't even know existed.  It was very well attended and featured an all star cast too with some of the local legends of trail such as Dougie, Rod, Jayde and Mark P, not to mention Mike O himself.  What a great start !  Well done MATES.

Saturday morning saw a smallish representation brave the heat on the mountain.  The last I saw of the Long Route Group was starting the climb from Skeleton Gorge to Maclears.  Hope you all made it okay.........I haven't read anything nasty in the newspapers......I was not envious.  The Short Route Group (all two of us) headed across to the dams and I had a very patient young lady who kept me company as far as the concrete road.  Up to this point she had proved to be a very capable trail runner but then converted to an equally able road runner as blitzed her way into the distance while I stopped to pretend to tie my shoe laces.  Despite taking every conceivable shortcut I still couldn't catch her.

But the highlight of the weekend was surely the final running of The Noordhoek Peak Run from Seamus and Annemarie Daly's house in Constantia Hills on Sunday morning.  We had a great turnout and it proved to be a magical morning as we ascended through the mist shrouded Tokai Forest with the cloud making the barking of the baboons even more eerie than usual. Seamus had hiked up to Silvermine the previous evening to leave a rucksack full of Coke, Energade and water for us at the top of the Fish Eagle Trail (less fondly known as Puffadder Corner).  We then broke above the cloud cover (briefly) on our way up to Noordhoek Peak.  We managed a seldom-achieved result of all summiting more or less at the same time although I did receive the usual cheeky comments about being one of the last to summit.  The return trip was again through the misty forest and right through the troop of baboons down on Level 0,5.  Brigette and Deborah were so busy cooing over the baby baboons and commenting on how well camouflaged they are that they failed to the biggest male baboon in the world lying on a tree stump probably 0,5m from them on the other side of the path.  I still can't hear properly from the screams that erupted after I pointed him out.  After that the pace was a lot brisker.  But to Seamus, thank you for creating this great trail running tradition.  Whilst Seamus will no longer be able to host this event from next year, we will be doing our very best to find a new home in the area (one has already emerged) from which to start the run and then return to for the big breakfast and social gathering on 18 December 2011 at which Seamus and Annemarie will be our guests of honour.  For once they can just relax and enjoy the occasion.  Now, Seamus cannot get all the glory.  We all know that Annemarie is the one who ensures that everything has always been so perfect on the morning.  Much of the success of this event is attributed to her efforts.  We are most grateful.

The event will probably never be quite the same but that doesn't mean it won't be as good.......just different.

THE COMING WEEKS

Saturday 25 December 2010 - NO, we won't be running.

Sunday 26 December 2010 - The Manor House 16km

The very best cure for the Christmas hangover and general festive season over-indulgence.  This is a WPA Event, starting and ending on the Chrysalis Academy fields in Tokai Forest.  So remember to wear your club kit and WPA number if you run for a club.  Otherwise, you will need to purchase a temporary licence.  My sources tell me that the race starts at 07h00 but get there MUCH EARLIER as the traffic is normally pretty chaotic trying to get into the forest parking area which is on the road that leads straight up to the Manor House (just before the Arboretum).  You have been warned.  This is a very popular race.  Also, do not take valuables along, even if left in your car.  Thieves have been targeting races and have been breaking into cars while the race is on.  Put everything out of sight.

Sunday 2 January 2011 - The Chairman's Run - VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE

Another great tradition at VOB which is the "pipe-opener" for the year and involves a run from the Clubhouse in Constantia to Signal Hill where a "bring-your-own" picnic is held with families and friends.  This has always been a mainly road run.

For the very first time we are going to be offering a Trail Alternative to the road run.  It will be a run from the Clubhouse, up to Cecilia Forest via the Constantia Greenbelts and then up to the contour path which we will follow all the way to Signal Hill.  Probably about 25km at a leisurely pace.  It will be an early start too - 05h30 from the Clubhouse.

Here is the very important bit:

If anyone is keen on doing this Trail Alternative, please RSVP to me as soon as possible so that we can see if there is any interest in this offering and, if there is, so that we can organise transport to get picnics to and people lifts back from Signal Hill.

ALL RUNNERS ARE WELCOME.

AND FINALLY................

We at acsis VOB Trail would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have supported us this year by coming along to our runs, assisting in leading the runsand groups, assisting with lifts when necessary and generally for creating the great vibe that has characterised this group over the past year.  Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed running with all of the regulars but also meeting and running with so many new and interesting trail runners this year.  I really hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have.

For those celebrating Christmas, have a truly blessed day on Saturday.  May everyone have a wonderful festive season and may 2011 bring a year of bountiful prosperity, an excess of good health and a great many hours of injury-free trail running.

If I don't see you at Manor House, see you in the New Year.

Cheers for now.

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING & WALKING: CHANGES TO RUN ON SATURDAY 18 DECEMBER 2010

CHANGES TO acsis VOB TRAIL RUN: SATURDAY 18 DECEMBER 2010

Although the run will still start at 06h30 at the Constantia Nek Car Park, the route itself being extended.  Jane and co will be running all the way up to Maclears Beacon and back (not just around the Dams as specified earlier) which will now make the run in the region of 20km (or just shy thereof).

That means that those wanting to do a shorter route can just stay on the jeep track and run to the dams and back.  Very difficult to get lost; but I have learnt that nothing is impossible so just keep your wits about you.

It is unlikely that I will be in attendance on Saturday as I will be saving myself for the Noordhoek Peak Run on Sunday.

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING AND WALKING: SATURDAY 18 DECEMBER 2010 - CONSTANTIA NEK TO THE DAMS AND BACK

vob logo with man.jpg

trail running header header.jpg

Hi Everyone

Feedback

Now I am not really in a position to comment on what happened on the Long Route last Saturday as Jane was leading the group.  I was running with the Short Route group but at one point we all stopped as there was a noise like a meteor entering the atmosphere, followed by a loud crash and the earth shuddered.  I had visions of tsunami warnings being signalled out across the globe.  Then we heard a noise like a baboon running into an electric fence.  Turns out that all it was, in fact, was this weeks Sailing Sandra winner from the long route group.  Mr Michael Ohlsson makes the headlines yet again.  Despite the fact that there was no blood involved (normally a requirement) we are making the award based on spectacular performance.  There weren't even aggravating circumstances as he had only had one beer before the run.  I have heard several descriptions of the event and I am not going to reveal my sources.  Dougie was a witness and can confirm the sighting but this is not his quote:

".........(Mike) fell so hard he made the earth shake and green pine needles rained down out of the trees and made the whole forest smell like a Xmas tree.  He also apparently screamed like a girl!!! "  Heheheheheheheh well done Mike.

PLEASE NOTE:

There will be no Friday Wrap-Up email this week.  I will be on leave so this is IT for the week.  Read carefully and remember.

SATURDAY 18 DECEMBER 2010 - CONSTANTIA NEK CAR PARK - UP AROUND THE DAMS AND BACK

Start Time and Place

06h30 from the Constantia Nek Car Park

Route

Once again, Jane will very kindly be leading this run up the Bridle Path (jeep track) to the Dams, around the Dams, possibly throwing in some single track and then back down more or less the same way.  Single track (short cut options on the way down).

Walk / Run and Brisk Walk Groups will take a break until mid-January 2011.

Distance

About 15km.  Not a long run but enough to keep the legs turning over and keep you honest as we go into the festive season.  For those wanting a shorter option then the safest is to head out with Jane and then turn (out-and-back) when you have half had enough .  Sorry if that's a bit vague but its that time of year.

Running Time

1.5 - 2 hours

Difficulty

To be honest, the first few kilometres up to the Hoerikwaggo Cottage are pretty exhausting but once you are up there its pretty easy going and then the descent is close to free-fall.......okay not that steep but its good easy (quad hammering) downhill.

Important Points
  1. Watch the weather report and wear the appropriate gear for the conditions.  Bear in mind that even if it is warm at the start, it can still get pretty cold at the top, even in summer if the south-easter is blowing.
  2. Carry enough water to see you to the top.  You can refill at the tap at the Hoerikwaggo Cottage.
  3. Keep an eye out for snakes on the road and paths.
  4. Don't forget the sunblock and a cap.
  5. Listen to Jane's instructions carefully. :-)
  6. Have fun.

acsis VOB TRAIL RUNNING & WALKING: SATURDAY 11 / SUNDAY 12 DECEMBER 2010 - JANE'S TOKAI MYSTERY TOUR / SURFER'S CHALLENGE / BAT RUN

vob logo with man.jpg

trail running header header.jpg

Hi Everyone

Feedback

Well I can't give any direct feedback as I didn't do any running over the weekend, having been laid low with something which I have been assured is commonly known as "man-flu" for most of last week.  I believe it is a virus which causes men to collapse in a pathetic heap, moaning and demanding attention but has a far lesser affect on women who tend to get up, pop two Panado and go to work.  Its a mystery of nature.

I did, however, have some feedback from Jane and Michael Ohlsson from the Devil's Peak Run on Saturday morning.  It seems that the morning started with a group who didn't receive  / read the Friday Wrap Up email which announced the change in Start Venue for the run.  So a small group incorrectly gathered at Kloof Nek Car Park while the main group was starting off from Platteklip Gorge.

So Please Note:  sometimes there are last minute changes in plan and these will always be announced in the Friday morning email at latest.  If you are planning on running with us, please check the Friday email.  If you can't get to email, then sms or phone me for confirmation.

Anyway, they all found each other, made it to the Devil's Peak Summit and back to the Saddle.  Then Jane admitted (unwillingly, I think) that there were some "navigational issues" in trying to locate the top of the Newlands Ravine descent..........20 - 30 mins of issues......  Admittedly, The Saddle is a confusing mish-mish of paths if you don't know it well and one can be tempted into attempting the Dark Gorge descent, which is not advisable but we will do it as an ascent over the course of the summer as I have now hiked it with CUM-hike.

Jane was going to try and buy Mike O's silence with beer re the above issues but then realised that she wouldn't have enough money (nor would any of the rest of us).  One would need a bag o' cash (traveller's cheques) like Christo Wiese was carrying at the City of London Airport to achieve this aim.  So instead, she wisely confessed.

Finally, I have seldom thought I would ask a trail runner to STOP being such a gentleman and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be asking this of Mike O BUT it appears that a lady trail runner took an award-worthy fall in front of him on Saturday.  Whilst he has reported the fall, he refuses to disclose who the runner was.  Very commendable Mike !  But now I am dying to know who it was.  So I am prepared to offer the perpetrator full immunity from being named and shamed on email (or by any other means) if she drops me an email to confess.............you'll feel so much better too.  You know you want to......

SATURDAY 11 DECEMBER 2010: JANE'S TOKAI FOREST MYSTERY TOUR

Start Time and Place

06h30 sharp from the Arboretum Car Park in Tokai Forest.  If you don't know where this is then drop me an email stating where you are coming from and I will explain how to get there.

Routes

Its definitely that time of year when I am short on details re the runs.  Jane says it will be more or less the same as this time last year.  Bearing in mind I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast, let alone where we ran this time last year, this is still a mystery run to me.  But it will be through the forest and along the slopes of Constantiaberg and possibly taking in a little of Silvermine too.

I will lead a shortened version of the full mystery run.

Walk / Run Group:    to be confirmed.

Brisk Walk Group:    to be confirmed.  But please note that dogs are not allowed in Tokai Forest.

Distances

Long route:    Probably around 15km but not more than 20km

Short Route:  Around 10km.

Running Time

Long Route:    About 2.5 hours

Short Route:   About 90 minutes.

Difficulty

Medium to easy.

Important Points
  1. Carry sufficient water on you for the distance you plan on running.  Do not rely on there being drinking water available on the mountain.
  2. Dress in appropriate trail running gear.  Watch the weather forecasts to determine what will be needed.
  3. Hopefully you will need sunblock and a cap (if summer has arrived by then).
  4. Watch out for snakes taking in the early morning rays on the paths.
  5. Sign the register before setting out.
  6. Have fun, this is not a race.
